Being a big fan of waterfalls and having seen many in upstate New York, Vermont, New Hampshire,…read moreWashington State, and Oregon, I wanted to check out some of Hawaii's famous cascades during my stay there. I set out first to Kapena Falls, a little known waterfall located only a 15-minute drive from where I was staying in Honolulu. The most difficult thing about the short hike to Kapena Falls was finding the trailhead. The directions given to me by Apple Maps brought me to Pali Highway, and after just a short distance from where I entered the roadway, I passed it, not catching any signs or markers noting the trail. I made a u-turn to go back to where the map said it was, and luckily, on the other side of the road, there was a turnoff on the highway that I exited onto. I got out of my car, walked over to the guardrail to see if I could see anything below, but nothing. Finally, and I can't recall exactly how I figured this out, but I came upon a website that pointed me to Nuuanu Cemetery, down the hill from Pali Highway. I found the cemetery, but I still had some figuring out to do once I got there in order to find the trailhead for the falls. Eventually, I ended up driving through to the back of the cemetery, where there was a small parking lot with a garage at the end of it. Some hikers in another car pointed me to an unmarked trail towards the left of the garage where I finally reached the beginning of my hike. The hike to the falls was short, only about a half of a mile, and very easy. The trail was beautiful, with lush tropical plants everywhere, and the calming sound of running water from the creek beyond. The atmosphere was much more comfortable in the shade of the trees than my previous hike, and I was the only one around. The falls were unimpressive, but still the experience was worth it. Moments of zen, for sure! In all, I spent about 20 minutes exploring this one, and it was a nice preview for the other waterfall hikes on my list.

You can view it from the Swell Bar on the 5th floor of the hotel or from the guest rooms if you're staying here. It's located on the Kealohilani Avenue side of the resort in a small lot that you can most definitely miss if you're not paying attention. It's a beautiful mural already but the cherry on top (no pun intended) is that there's a camera on the top of the building pointing down. There's a computer setup on the wall where you can set the timer to snap a photo of your pose on the mural. Then you can see the photo and even email it to yourself. It's such an unknown gem of Hawaii that provides one amazing postcard.

I couldn't exactly run through the mud because my shoes would sink so far down. It was a great workout! They have obstacle courses throughout-- like a big slide, over and unders, monkey bar things, tire obstacles, and climbing on the beach. The combination of people that go are super awesome. You have military people, groups dressed up, families, and those people who like to just scream randomly! They gave oranges and bananas at the end for all race finishers. MONSTER gave out some drinks for free too. I usually don't drink that, but the zero sugar ones tasted pretty good. It was great to see the yelp family there too. Yelp had a booth that took your picture at the end! If you plan on doing this-- wear your bathing suit underneath. Wear knee high socks (if you don't wear pants) and I recommend bringing a towel, change of clothes with you and flip flops. You have the option to hose off all the mud/dirt at the end. Oh and I borrowed duct tape from some nice strangers. (Thank you to them!) The website and information packet say don't use duct tape on your shoes, but it's necessary if you want to keep your shoes from sticking in the mud. Overall it's a fun run! I only ran parts of it, yet managed to finish in the top 25 for the women's division. So if I can do it-- you can too!

Me, I look for Chinatown." ― Bonnie Tsui, from American Chinatown I wasn't originally going to review Chinatown but I saw my review count and I couldn't resist. I want the milestone 1,800th to be about Chinatown, Honolulu edition. Did you know that Honolulu's Chinatown is one of the oldest in the United States, having been established in the 1840s to accommodate whaling ships docking at Honolulu Harbor? Today, it spans 25 acres and is renowned as a vibrant, multicultural hub featuring fresh markets, eclectic Pan-Asian eateries, and a thriving arts district. From hidden gems to delicious eateries, stopping by Chinatown is an adventure. Clothing boutiques, lei shops, and bakeries with freshly baked goods, you can find a little bit of everything here. We saw some people illegally parked on the street right on the corner, but they didn't care, they would brave a citation just for these amazing treats! I am sure the neighbors who live across from this place think this is a massive headache, to have such a popular chocolate place right in their own neighborhood - either that, or a blessing, since they can just walk right across! There are 4 tiny stalls in the driveway in the front of the Doggie Bakery and this place, but it looks far too challenging to get in and out and onto the main street, which is insanely busy on a weekend. We parked in the neighboring lot and purchased something from another business just so we could get some chocolates here. If the parking situation were better, I'd come back. I purchased the Hokkaido Soft Serve (weekends only, I think), it was delicious but I was expecting more fatty mouthfeel for something that was labeled as "Hokkaido". It was lighter than I was expecting. The chocolates, on the other hand, were fabulous and worth every, expensive, penny. By the way, who the heck nowdays says "worth every penny"? Probably old folks like me who knew what a penny was, and now due to inflation and the Federal Reserve nixxing the penny, it's probably worth 0.0012 cents now. Rainbow Shave Ice - it really does taste like shave ice! I came here mainly for this, as I've heard the hype and the hype is real! Hibiki Whisky Chocolate - nice and lovely. Dubai Chocolate - with gold leaf and everything. The Dubai craze is insane. This was good, but the least of my favorites. Six chocolates + one soft serve = $30.
