Coming home from work one night in my 2006 Prius with cruise control set at 70mph, the dashboard dummy lights light up and cruise control disables. I drive to safe area off to the side of US-290 and read user manual to find out what red triangle with ! in the center, check engine light on and VSC light could all mean. It just says "drive to Toyota Service Center" or some such. I do so in the next few days and I am informed 7 days later that all the codes seem to point to a failed coolant control valve which will cost $795 or so to repair. I ask them to also flush fluids, change the oil/filter, and do a full tuneup. I am informed a day later that water pump has leak at seal and after that, total repair will be $1,631. I discuss with my wife and we bite the bullet on what has otherwise been an excellent, paid-for car with no issues. A week later I am informed that there is one code they can't seem to clear and it points to (computer analysis reveals) a failed #7 cell in the Hybrid Battery Assembly. I go to pick up the car. The mechanic says everything is in excellent mechanical condition except the code won't clear until the battery assembly is replaced, meaning... I still have all the dashboard lights glaring at me that I did when I dropped it off and cruise control is still disabled (important feature driving on TX highways). I am informed that replacing the pack including labor will cost $3,871. I say, "not only NO, but HELL no!". I'm not going to put a brand new $4,000 pack into a car that already has 167,000 miles on its chassis and transmission. I drive away. Parked safely in its sheltered space at our apt., my wife proceeds to work her magic and finds links and reviews (including a great Forbes magazine article) to a company with rave Yelp reviews called Hometown Hybrid. I email the owner. She replies. I discuss with My wife. We agree to pay $1,000 plus $200 trip charge for the mechanic to drive 212 miles from Houston and replace my pack with a refurbished one guaranteed for 1yr/12k miles. They also get original, new, zero mileage, Toyota packs that, in turn, they sell as replacement packs for $2,500. But, again, I'm at 167k mileage. Not going that route. Nicholas Anderson, the mechanic, shows up today, takes 45 minutes start to finish. I turn on the car, computer recognizes non-faulty battery, no more dash warning lights, cruise control is back, and that sweeeet electromagnetic assisted acceleration from a standing start is BACK! He did a great job being very efficient and answering several questions along the way. My resale value is greater than ZERO again and I don't have to buy another vehicle for a while. I can't say enough about how great Hometown Hybrid and Nicholas are and how stupid Toyota and/or the dealerships are for their ridiculous markup. It horribly undermines the gas savings experienced across the lifespan of the car to backload a giant 4K dollar expense for a battery pack replacement. I would never consider buying a battery hybrid again, except now I know that reasonable 3rd party solutions like Hometown Hybrid exist to fill this incredible void. I bought a 2007 Toyota Prius HV (HIGH VOLTAGE) hybrid car battery from Hometown Bybrids last July. The bad news is it died this February but you gotta ask why the 5-star review? Their service and support!! I called and within just a moment or two, I was remembered as a customer and was told a Warranty replacement would be on its way to me on Monday. I called late on a Friday and YES, they not only answered but took care of me. I'll get the battery tomorrow, install it myself and send back the bad battery with no cost to me other than the 20 minutes it took me to remove the old battery and prep it to return to them the minute I get the replacement and 20 more minutes installing the replacement. I'm that confident the replacement will work as did the "bad" battery I originally got from them before it went bad. Look NO company is perfect. We all make mistakes. But this place STANDS BEHIND its products and their warranty. DON'T go ANYWHERE ELSE. It's just not worth the risk when there is an excellent company like Hometown and they ship just about ANYWHERE. Don't want to install it yourself and don't live near them like I didn't? A trained professional is probably nearby that they will refer for the install or they will come to YOU to install it for you for a modest fee. I had LOTS of experience messing with the battery and replacing cells before this so I installed it myself in 30-40 minutes but it's not for the faint of heart or the inexperienced. HIGH VOLTAGE can be dangerous or lethal. And the install is free if you are in their service area or a modest fee if you've not. You'll save enough on the battery compare to other companies (I shopped around,p and I KNOW you will) that even with a remote install fee you will STILL BE AHEAD. Buy from HOMETOWN! Several warning lights came on in my 2008 Prius, which has 145,000+ miles. I called Hometown Hybrids in Houston, and here's why: About 4 years ago, I thought my hybrid battery was finished. After speaking with Jana, she told me what she thought my problem was, and it wasn't the battery. Her phone diagnosis was spot on--it was something else, and as a result of her losing a sale, I gained several thousand extra miles on my car (and saved a LOT of money!). I knew that when my battery did go, Hometown Hybrids will get my business. Fast forward four years--the battery died, and I called Jana. She did believe it was the battery, explained the process for testing and, if necessary, replace it. She also said that there may be a brake-related repair that might be needed because battery failure and the brake problem often go hand-in-hand. We set up the app't; Eric showed up on time, explained everything, and got right to work. He exercised great caution because of COVID-19, did the test, replaced the battery, and let me know that the brake issue is not a problem at the moment. He told me how to recognize it, so if it does occur, I can get it taken care of immediately. Eric even put everything in the back of my car for me!!! It was apparent to me the hybrid battery in my 2005 Prius was nearing the end of it's service life. Although I was in Houston early October and knew about Hometown Hybrids, (my home is Oklahoma City), I decided to delay the replacement, not my best decision. Two weeks later the dash illuminated with multiple annunciators. I attached my cheap scanner to see the code indicating it was time to "Replace hybrid battery". I began the quest to locate the least expensive yet quality replacement battery options in the OKC area. I was unable to locate local support, except the dealer (ouch $$$$). I crossed my fingers and contacted Hometown Hybrids about service in Oklahoma. No Oklahoma service, but they will travel from Houston to Dallas/Ft Worth area for a small (reasonable) fee. We confirmed a date to meet the next week at a Ft Worth location. I towed the Prius to the location. The tech called to indicate he was en-route and when he expected to be at our designated location. Tech arrived on time ready to work. Tech confirmed the diagnosis and began replacement. Forty minutes later I am test driving the car! Tech (Shea) was very polite and professional. These folks provide excellent customer service. They even honored the advertised sale price that expired the week before my replacement occurred. What an amazing company....from the initial phone call to Nicholas's installation of the new battery. So, basically I started out by contacting an individual off craigslist to replace my hybrid battery, to find out when he arrived and installed the battery it failed. I was a bit upset because he was at my house for over 2 hours...trying to "figure out the problem". I got a bit upset due to the fact that he honestly didn't know what he was doing. In the meantime, Jessica was calling to arrange services for Hometown Hybrids to come to my house and what a welcome phone call it was! She was available at 8:45pm on a Wednesday evening to arrange my appointment (if that doesn't show customer service I don't know what does). Fast forward to my appointment time, which Nicholas arrived about 30 mins early, and notified me well ahead of schedule that he would be arriving. Wow! Impressed! Nicholas completed the procedure and send me screen shots of the hybrid battery at full battery and charging. I was in awe! To sum it all up, honestly DO NOT hire anyone from craigslist!! See all the 5-star reviews this business has? There's a reason for that! I didn't call Hometown Hybrids (HH) first when I realized my Prius hybrid battery was dying. I foolishly went to Rising Sun Toyota in Austin, who charged me $160 to run the diagnostics that told them the battery was out, then tried to sell me a battery for $3,000+. So I called Hometown Hybrids, who informed me Auto Zone will run the same diagnostic test at NO COST. HH then sent Eric to my location in Austin, and he installed a recycled battery in about an hour for under $1000. The first battery they installed failed in a month, but Eric came out immediately and replaced it at no cost. I've had the second battery for 14 months, no issues. Last weekend, my Prius died and then turned back on by itself, then died and wouldn't start. I called HH, and Jana, the woman that had managed my hybrid battery installation, was very kind and spent time with me to troubleshoot my problem - which was NOT the hybrid battery. She suspected it was the 12V battery, which she said I could replace myself and sent me an instructional video. She was correct, it was the 12V, I could replace it myself (girl power!) and she was supportive every step of the way. Who does that? i will not hesitate to hire Hometown Hybrids to replace my hybrid battery should the need arise again. read more

Our 2007 Toyota Prius had a malfunctioning hybrid battery and the dealer (Fred Haas Toyota in this case but they all quoted similar on the phone) quoted $3800 plus taxes for a new battery and labor. That wasn't a real option for our car (9 years old, 150,000 miles, only worth $4600 before the battery went out). So we started car hunting but our ideal new-to-us car isn't around right now (a low mileage 2013-2014 Prius 3). So I started really looking into options. Hometown Hybrids is amazing! Their sole purpose is to replace hybrid car batteries! Matthew showed up at 10am today like they said, installed the new-to-us battery in less than an hour, answered all of our questions while he worked, and impressed the crap out of me. My 2006 Toyota Prius engine light went off. I had just replaced the suspension last month for 1700 dollars. The local mechanic said it is the hybrid battery cooling fan. Another 400 dollars down the drain. Two days later, the engine light went off again. Back to the mechanic who now said it is the battery and advised me to ditch the car. My wife agreed as she does not like me driving an old car! But, this is the my first car and it had only 85000 miles on it. Started getting idiot lights on my 2007 prius with 80k miles! Looked everything up and had Auto Zone read the OBD II codes. Bad hybrid battery!! Called Toyota, $4000. Looked online, Amazon & eBay, 2k - 3k, some free shipping others $$. 6 mo to 2 yr warranty. Plus I would have had to install it myself. Found some sites online that will come to your location and remove and install your remanufactured or new battery. Most have 2yr/50k miles (refurb) or 3yr/75k miles (new). Hometown Hybrids was the only one that would check if you really needed a new battery and would do a test drive with you after install. So I chose Hometown Hybrids (after checking BBB and reading many reviews from different sources) and I feel confident and good with my choice. I called Jana and made a appointment for the next day, Steve called to confirm, showed up on time and was finished in about 50 min. He rechecked everything and we went on a 20 mile test drive. We purchased a rebuilt battery from them earlier this year for our 2006 Prius after the dash lit up like a Christmas Tree and codes showed the dreaded POA80 code. Ron on Priuschat recommended these guys to me. We're hoping to get another 6-8 years worth of service for the 2006 Prius on it. My 2007 Prius has been acting up and I had noticed large fluctuations in the battery charge as well as the engine running hard with very low power. Like many Prius owners who hit 100k miles, the news that our 2007 car needed a new battery from Toyota and it would cost us $3600, definitely made for a bad week. Fortunately, I found an article on Forbes.com about this company in Houston that can replace the Prius battery at a fraction of the cost... plus their work carries a one year / 25k mile warranty to boot. Needless to say I made the call. They gave me a solid quote and said they could do the work in my own driveway -- we live 3 hours away from Houston -- so I wouldn't have to drive my car anywhere. Can I add another star? My 2006 Prius had 200K miles on it. Dashboard lit up like a Christmas tree so I took it to the Toyota dealership where I bought it. Apparently, the salesman who sold me the car was either no longer there or forgot he told he it would cost between 1.5 and 2K to replace the hybrid battery "if I even owned it that long" because the dealership quoted me a price of 4.8K to fix it, worth more than the car. Figuring I wasn't the only one who had worn out the hybrid battery, I did some research and came across this establishment. It looked good, had good reviews, and when i called some friends in Houston, they said they were the real deal. We arranged a time to meet in Slidell, LA, (I live in Alabama) and the battery was in and the old one out in 30 or 40 minutes. A lot of folks say they can do the work, but this was the only outfit which would warranty it that I could find anywhere near me. Heck, I'd open a franchise here if they'd let me. Wow! This was such a great experience!! Was in contact with someone from Hometown Hybrids via their chat service on their website. Jessica was informative and kind; she answered all my questions and even sent a follow up email the next day. This company has great communication! I called in shortly after my exchange with Jessica to set my appointment. Jan was anticipating my call and has some information about my vehicle already. A few days after setting the appointment Steve came and replaced our battery with a rebuilt one. He was quick and courteous, very knowledgeable and a hard worker. Called and spoke with Jana, very friendly and informative (5 stars for her) she answered all my questions and scheduled a time for Mike (5 stars for him) to diagnose and install the replacement battery. Mike was on time, and explained what his plan was. He ran his diagnosis, and said all that he could see was several cells of the battery were at or below 5v and every thing was 10v or higher and he was confident that this was the problem He did his thing and and as soon as he was finished she started right up, I forgot to mention a toyota Tech diagnosed the bad battery almost 2 years ago and quoted a price of over 3k for a new battery. So into storage it went, until today. I bought it in this condition. Mike brought it back to life and gave me a quick tutorial on how to operate, drive and maintain a hybrid. I got to Hometown Hybrids' location a half hour early and unloaded all my gear. Went to the donut store next door, and by the time I got back the mechanic was already halfway through with the job. The entire staff was extremely friendly, they even used their fancy scan tool to run a test on my ABS pump, they said if it's going to fall it usually does in 10 seconds, the test ran for 10 minutes with no errors reported, I got a lucky unicorn according to them when it comes to the ABS pump! They let me take a pic inside their shop, I was drooling at all the hybrid batteries! Took a short test drive, and the replacement battery worked like a champ! Great service and good folks! 2006 Prius with 180k miles on it. No surprise that the HB battery finally went bad. Traded e-mails with Jessica who was very helpful and extremely easy to work with. Scheduled my appointment for 1030 near my work. Shea called and was there by 1015 ready to go. 30 minutes later - full set of diagnostics were run and the new battery was installed and I'm on my way!!! Shea is friendly and skilled, chatted and answered questions while flying through the replacement. Quality of work was great. The battery has only been in the car for an hour, so I can't speak to reliability and life-length - but, based on how these folks do business, I have no reservations that it will perform better than advertised. At 155k miles on my 200 Prius, I got the dreaded red exclamation point in the triangle. After getting a bid of almost $3000 for a non Toyota refurbished battery from my local dealership, I began a desperate search for another option. Based on the reviews here, I called Hometown Hybrids and got an appointment for the next Saturday. Unfortunately, my technician got sick and couldn't make the appointment. Jessica rescheduled me for the next Tuesday, and waived the $200 trip charge for my trouble! Today, Nicholas, a former marine, replaced my battery in less than 45 minutes! First-class customer service and best prices and warranty that we found in Houston. Due to supply chain issues, there was a wait of several weeks for a genuine Toyota replacement battery. Jessica in the office kept me updated, and arranged for installation the day after the battery arrived. The installer did a very professional job, and even alerted me to several tips for maintaining the battery life. Then, a few days later, our son was driving our 2012 Prius in Big Bend when he accidentally drained the other battery.
