The inner suburb of Homebush is located 15 km west of the Sydney central business district. Homebush was established in the 1800s by the New South Wales colony's surgeon D'Arcy Wentworth. The suburb was possibly named after Wentworth's 'home in the bush' located here, or may have been named from the history of droving cattle and sheep to Sydney's central stockyards, located at the later site of Flemington Markets and the Sydney Olympic Park site. Drovers camped here after their journey through 'the bush' and may have adopted the name 'home bush'.
I went to Homebush Boys High School for four years, so Homebush station was my stop. Homebush Boys is regarded as one of the academically best-performing comprehensive schools in the state, and has ranked above selective schools. Lots of famous people came out of there. The best sporting high school in the state, and we were unbeaten for years and years in total sports count against the other schools in this strong sporting zone. I was the best runner in the state in my age category, winning seventeen state championships, so I led a charmed existence. To get to school from Homebush station we had to trek a full kilometer in driving blizzards through mountains and valleys of dense forest, without shoes. Kids nowadays have it so easy.
Homebush station opened in 1855 when the railway line came through. The station was expanded to 6 platforms when the line between Redfern and Homebush grew six-fold in the 1920's when the line went electric.
Nothin' special on the station to give it more than two stars, though. read more
