Also ordered sn eel, mushroom and a tuna nigiri .. top notch flavour, freshness. Order ahead for either take out or eat in...

I've read many reviews on this restaurant and most are very positive and I'm guessing I hit them on…read morean off night, I mean it was two hours before closing on New Years eve, I suppose an off meal may be excusable. Never the less it was the worst Japanese bento box I've ever had, it was horrible! The restaurant itself is very cute and I was only there for five minutes picking up my take-out order but the owners/staff were exceptionally friendly and seemed like very nice people...I ordered two chicken teriyaki bento boxes that came to $40 including tip which i believe is pretty much the going rate, though im only familar with prices in Japanese restaurants in Kelowna, im not familiar with Vernon at all. The portions were tiny, one tempera shrimp, 4 or 5 tiny purple squash and a giant onion ring with a few fine strands of carrot. The batter on the tempura was thick, heavy and saturated in oil tasting very greasy as opposed to light and crispy. They give you I'd estimate less than a teaspoon of sauce for your tempura, you know those little plastic cups restaurants put suace in, they were maybe a quarter full in both bento boxes! Its comical! Now i realize the salads they serve in bento boxes are token salads but again, tiny! Maybe a tablespoon of lettuce drenched in a beige salad dressing. 6 pieces of California roll cut so thin they were all falling apart, just poor presentation. At first i thought, oh they give you more sushi than other restaurants but soon realized pieces were cut half the thickness of all other restaurants and again consequently all falling apart. A few small pieces of teriyaki chicken on a small bed of rice was very tasty, but not even close to enough big of a serving to feed any slightly hungry adult man or woman, again, kinda comical. One last thing and i think the intentions are good, but they put a piece of clear wrap cellophane over the take-out container and then close the lid onto that, sealing the food in the container. Unfortunately that steams everything inside including the tablespoon of salad, the California rolls and the tempura, contributing I think to the heavy greasy batter on the tempura. In nut shell, not good, worst 40 bucks I've spent in a restaurant for as long as I can remember. Should have drove through Wendy's :)
