The Home Emporium, located on South Military Highway in the heart of Chesapeake is a big store with lots of products available for the home. This is a fun place to roam around and just take a look at the items for sale. They have a large selection of area rugs, bathroom fixtures and many things in between. Hot - no AC. Cheap stuff. Ugh. Waste of time. I bookmarked this place on Yelp a while ago and wanted to see what it was all about. Some of the reviews are very positive so I figured it would be a treasure trove of home goodies all at excellent prices. As soon as I walked in I realized that was probably not the case. It was REALLY hot - no AC at all - so it was close to 90 degrees inside - and there is a very basic sort of musty smell throughout that reminded me of a room filled with old furniture with sheets on it. I sat on a tufted leather (or leather looking) couch which was priced at around $800 and looked at some lamps and fake flower arrangements and random cheap home goodies. At the front - where one checks out - it is set up like a Sam's Club warehouse almost. There are only a few lanes for checkout and there is a very ratty old drink machine with an older popcorn machine near their customer service desk where you can get popcorn. Not sure if you pay or if it is offered for free - I didn't get that far. No one offered to help or anything like that while we walked around. This isn't that sort of place. Don't get me wrong - this is probably an excellent place to find some cheap options for home decor for those looking for that sort of thing but it isn't really what I was expecting. Just know in advance this is like a much cheaper TJ Maxx store and if that is what you want - go for it I'm sure you'll find some good stuff at good prices (maybe). read more

Home Emporium have some good finds. It's one of those places where you have to check often to see what you can find. If you see something you like grab it, because it may not be there tomorrow. It's not the average store where they keep stock of certain items. It's left over materials, discounted items, and etc. watch out for the prices though because I thought I was getting a good price on a bathroom vanity and Home Depot had a better style for cheaper. I would advise you to get all you need the first trip because sometimes the items sell out very fast. I have purchased a lot of lovely pieces for my home. The merchandise is quality and some items are irregular and scratch and dents. Overall these items are priced for there value. This place is a hidden treasure in my opinion. If you're looking for unique pieces with character (the reclaimed look) at bargain prices, this is the place. Tufted Leather couches, slope arm nailhead trim tweed dining chairs, cottage trestle table and benches, polished wood slabs, so much! If you like the mod look, you might not find much, but it's a reclaimed/rustic paradise. I didn't take any stars off for customer service because even though they don't hold your hand through picking furniture, the people are nice enough and will direct you towards one part of the store or another - since I'm getting such cheap stuff, I'm cool with that. read more

Working at home Emporium was absolutely unpleasant .It was a lot of drama, chaos , and one of the mangers had one of the worst attitudes ever. It is amazing , how some of the employees that constantly started drama and kept drama going didn't receive any disciplinary action however , other employees that wasn't involved in drama always got accused for something that they weren't involved in . Very interesting store. Lots to browse. Prices were really good. Not your run in the mill Cooke cutter home decor stop. Cool and unique finds throughout the store. From out door to the kitchen, lighting, rugs, furniture, rocking chairs, holiday stuff. Oh my...Was recommended by our real estate agent. Tons of wall and floor size mirrors at fabulous prices. Reggie helped us and made sure we had exactly what we needed for our half bath renovation. He calculated our square footage, gave us advice on tile, made sure we had enough material, and helped us load everything into my car. To say he's an amazing employee is an understatement. Beware - Employees are incompetent. We purchased $2000 worth of furniture. By the time we went to pick up the last of it, our kitchen dining room set, this is what we faced: 1. They RE-sold our 4 dining room chairs. WHAT? We paid for them (with interest on a visa card) you sold property that doesn't belong to you! Is this even legal? 2. Decorative pieces were missing when we made absolute certain all pieces were there. We even had another piece taken from the floor model and added to ours since ours was missing the piece. It was COMPLETE when purchased. Apologies yes, but I have no chairs I spent two+ hours picking out, and that I paid for. I was told they weren't marked sold, maybe there was a shift change, or the employee got busy, etc. Excuse after excuse, money refunded, but no offer to purchase other chairs at a discount, or match the price for similar chairs in the future when they get a new shipment in? Ridiculous. Unprofessional. Absurd. Beware of the extremely lazy, and incompetent workers if you don't take your items home with you that day. read more

Wow. Totally had no idea a place like this existed. I mean, it's not in the prettiest of shopping centers. Sure, there's a lot of traffic but this area is quite empty. But I really don't care. It's huge inside (probably a really good rental rate for them). It's about as big as many of the other furniture store but in this instance, you have a lot of unfinished wood. I didn't get the feeling that they finish and paint wood for you but to me, it gives me the chance to be creative and get the specific color I want. To add to the unfinished wood part, it does smell like that inside... a very industrial, worker's factory-type smell. From kitchen islands, dressers, side tables, dinner tables, couches, and chairs, there's so much to choose from. They even have flooring, bathrooms, rugs... Lots and lots to choose from. Lots of sturdy furniture with unique designs. During this time of year, it's going to be hot inside. Dress casual and relaxed because you'll do a lot of walking and you'll get hot quick. I'll be in need of some new furniture and I'll gladly go back. I don't know furniture prices that well but given what they offer and at their ticketed prices, I didn't feel things were over or underprice. I think they're set well. read more

They have everything, including the kitchen sink. Literally. Home Emporium is a great place to come and kill some time and meander. Upon entry, you will see a vast array of furniture. You can find some good deals but make sure to look for dings and scratches. Other items include: rugs, lamps, and a ton of mirrors. The store itself is huge but it is over crowded and disorganized. I guess they recently added some clothing items. I wanted to try on a dress and asked an employee where the dressing room was. She stated that there wasn't one and they do not allow merchandise in the bathrooms. She suggested that I try the item on the open...? I don't care how cute the dress was that was not happening. Home Emporium's tag line should be "Everything AND the Kitchen Sink." Where else can you buy new counter tops, doors, windows and flooring AND browse antique teak tables, jewelery, artwork, silk flowers, ceramics and the occasional giant wagon wheel? It kind of reminds me of the Williamsburg Pottery in that way. A friend shined me on to this place and assured me it was worth the trek out on Military Highway to what might very well be the ugliest strip shopping center in Hampton Roads (and that's saying something). It is worth it. Especially if you're looking for home improvement pieces and want to get quality without shelling out standard retail. It's basically a closeout and liquidation warehouse. They buy overstock items and select imports and antiques and sell them at a discount. The store is owned by a parent company called Southeastern Salvage. They have a handful of stores on the East Coast. It's pretty much what you see is what you get--or what you can dig up is what you get. There are doors and cabinets precariously stashed and stacked here and there. They do have staff to help you find what you're looking for, but if you saw it there once it definitely doesn't mean it'll be there next time you come in. read more

They even have a station where you can get items like bags monogrammed. The items here are definitely one in a kind and good quality surpringsly. Its a warehouse style with the store broken up into different sections. It features a lot of high end items but at a really cheap cost. I frequent here often just to see what kind of new things they have. One tip: if you like it when you see it, buy it. Management was excellent and fixed my damaged cabinet situation immediately (speaking of that keep forgetting I need to exchange a warped door with you James lol). I so love this store. My initial love began in Alabama when visiting my mom and sister. I loved so much I went to Norfolk to visit my son and we spent hours in the store. It kills me that this store is not in new York nor do they deliver. I always check circular on line for new finds....you cannot go wrong.
