My husband became a resident of Hampton Manor in Bellview in December. He was on hospice but I was…read morevery concerned of the care he was/wasn't receiving. I spoke with staff & they ALL suggested I switch to Hospice of Marion County. I cannot thank them enough. His nurse is Renita, and she is an angel. Her heart is a true care giving heart & I feel so blessed to have her caring for my Jim. The social worker, Susan is always just a phone call away. I can finally rest knowing Jim is in good hands with Hospice of Marion County and the staff of Hampton Manor.

My stepfather was forced to quit his job. Two years ago, he had his leg amputated, and months…read morebefore that, he underwent a hip replacement on the same leg. On top of that, he was battling advanced liver disease and had survived two heart attacks. Last Thursday, my mother called me in distress--his condition had worsened. He was hallucinating and had lost control of his bowels, something that had been happening for weeks. When we arrived at the ER, we were told his symptoms were the result of liver failure. Still hallucinating and in unbearable pain, he was admitted to the cardiac floor. As anyone with experience in a hospital knows, weekends bring delays. While the nursing staff has been exceptional, and some physicians have gone above and beyond, the system itself is failing us. My mother, elderly herself, can no longer care for him at home. But to our shock, we found out that because their combined income is slightly over $3,000 a month, they don't qualify for assistance. How is that a fair measure? This is not a safe discharge. I pleaded with them--home is not an option. I requested end-of-life care to keep him comfortable, praying that hospice would be the answer we've always been told it is. But then we hit another roadblock. He was denied admission to a nearby hospice house because he wasn't on pain medication. Desperate, I contacted his physician, who personally ensured he was given something for pain and that the denial was reconsidered. The next day, my mother called--staff were at his bedside, asking if he was still in pain. Because he had finally received comfort measures and was no longer actively suffering, they again denied him inpatient hospice care. I begged them to reconsider--he has no insurance, we have no money, and sending him home is not safe. But the system doesn't care. They say he's "in his right mind," yet moments later, he's confused and hallucinating. And when he briefly returns to lucidity, he apologizes to us, saying, "I know we don't have the money for me to die. I didn't think it would be like this." The very safety net that was supposed to exist for people in his situation is nonexistent. Their only advice? Take him home, and they'll send someone to check in. That's it. Before you donate a dime to hospice organizations, look beyond the polished image they present. Ask for the real stories, not just ours, but those of countless others left without options. Some hospice facilities won't take you unless you're expected to live only 3 to 5 more days. That's not what hospice was meant to be--it was supposed to provide dignity in death, to allow families time to say their final goodbyes. The nurses caring for him are shocked he's lasted this long. But I guess unless a patient is in a complete coma, they don't qualify. Meanwhile, the executives running these organizations will never have to worry about what happens to their loved ones when they're too sick to work, uninsured, and making just barely too much for government assistance. The services that were supposed to be there when people like my stepfather needed them most haven't just fallen short--they simply don't exist.

Avante of Ocala met my needs for rehabilitation after acquiring Rhabdomyolyesis, a life-threatening…read morecondition that causes the muscles to deteriorate. The staff were phenomenal from direct care to physical and occupational therapist. Along with being patient and caring, the nursing assistant were extremely attentive. I was encouraged by the consistent manner that each staff person demonstrated day after day. The only improvement that I would suggest would be with the Food Services. I would be dishonest if I did by not mention that the culinary offerings were shocking and void of nutritional balance. I did not look forward to the meals until after having a come to accountability meeting with the Patient Advocate. Change! That was what the entire facility needed when it came to food services. Thus is the reason I rate Avante st Ocala 4 out of 5. I"ConsiderIng the rehabilitation I needed, I left Avante with greater strength than when I came and grateful that this facility was my daughter's choice! I rate the Physical & Occupational Therapy department 5/5. If the need ever arise again, I pray that it diesnt, I would definitely make this Avante At Ocala my choice, even being 45 miles away from home. I pray that this first visit will be my last! Hear ! If you are looking for a true rehab center-don't expect to find it here. Therapy is very limited…read more The workers there claim they are short staffed so it cuts down on the attention you may need-like a simple cup of ice water or help going to the bathroom- the wait is very long-only to find you have messed the bed. then you are given a wet wash rag with no soap & told to clean up. d some nights no wash cloths or towels were available we were told! really?? how would you like ants crawling in youf room-even in your bed! only to be told they would enter a ticket on it. claimed they had no bug spray to use on it. how about waking you at 8:30pm while sleeping- to ask if you want to take a shower??!!! then have trouble getting back to sleep! the food is mostly disgusting -once In awhile something is edible. servings are small & no snacks available. only serve sweet tea- can't get unsweet tea. some nurses are nice but that number is few. So please look elsewhere for a true rehab center.

Yes , I will say the place was clean , but staff for the most part , was lazy and uncommunicative. I did not receive the meds I was supposed to have . In one case the dose was wrong . I wouldn't feed the food to a dog . ( tiny portions and nasty) . I was able to get a ride out of there and left after 2 days. I would not recommend this place to anyone . Repeated phone calls to try to straighten out problems got no response . It was only after I said I was leaving , that people came to make excuses for the lack of service and bad attitudes . The facility…read morewas adequate, extremely understaffed, the nurses are overworked & not very understanding when it comes to their patients being scared, not understanding what is happening and not feeling well. Their main job is passing out the medication, no real interaction with my mom. The CNA's get the tough jobs, cleaning up the patient's, getting their meals, the food is horrible and changing the beds and showering them. Because they are too busy, many times they fall short. A couple of them should not even be CNA's as they are mean and rough. I was not impressed and relieved I got her out of there before she passed away. I blame the Administrator and the Director of Nursing. My advise is check out other facilities and make your presence known.
