James C Wittig, MD - Getting this tumor taking out by Dr. Wittig

I hardly know where to begin in expressing my gratitude and admiration for Dr. James C. Wittig's…read morecare and treatment of my rather unusually challenging knee disease. Since at least 2004, I had suffered from a rare, benign but aggressive tumor, called pigmented vilonodular synovitis--PVNS for short. My symptoms went from painless but marked swelling to increasingly debilitating though still painless swelling of the knee. The first orthopedic surgeon I consulted asked me in 2011 if I could live with it. At the time, since my only symptom was a slight limp, I told him I could. A slight limp seemed preferable to surgery. This turned out to have been very bad advice since the PVNS tumor, clearly indicated on the MRI done at the time, was progressively destroying my knee joint. By early 2017, I acceded to the use of a cane to walk comfortably. A second orthopedic surgeon, looking at a new MRI, told me that on account of the PVNS I needed to consult an orthopedic oncologist, and immediately recommended Dr. Wittig. My first consultation with Dr. Wittig was a reassuring experience. He patiently described the surgical intervention required, and explained that it would have to be done in two consecutive surgeries, the first to excise the tumor on the back of the knee, the second to excise the remaining tumor on the front of the knee and complete the full knee replacement. Perhaps most striking, though, was that Dr. Wittig, a warm person by nature, went on in a leisurely way to get to know me. There was no sense that he was anxious to move on to his next patient. He showed genuine interest in my multiple professions--musician, photographer, and writer. In my capacity as a writer, I was especially anxious to know if my recovery from these two surgeries would permit me to make the lecture tour to Germany planned for later in the year. He told me that though I might still require a cane, he thought the trip should be no problem. Through both surgeries, Dr. Wittig has been especially friendly and forthcoming with my wife. After each hours-long surgery he immediately came out of the OR to reassure her that the operation had gone well, and that he had been able to save my leg. The day after my second surgery, Dr. Wittig made a special trip into the hospital from his home some 25 miles away to visit me and see how I was doing. During my recovery, he has been in touch with both my wife and me via email and Facebook to check on my recovery, and to send messages of encouragement. Now, thanks both to Dr. Wittig and my talented physical therapist, I walk without a cane, and am back on my bicycle. Recovery had been scheduled for 6 weeks; I am ahead of schedule by a full week, and I am looking forward to my trip to Germany in 2 1/2 weeks. Dr. Wittig is a truly remarkable physician and human being.

At my first visit Dr Wittig was so caring and explained in full detail all about the type of tumor I had and exactly what he would do to remove it and make sure I didn't experience a recurrence. He performed a resection using a bone graft from my hip along with a metal plate and screws. His incredible skill, truly hands of gold are the reason my tumor never came back. Beyond his surgical expertise, Dr. Wittig is compassionate, generous, and genuinely cares about his patients. Even all these years later, he still remembers me and my case. I would trust him with my life, and I am forever grateful for what he did for me and my family.

I was referred by my primary Doctor to see Dr. Vincent McInerary, an orthopedist surgeon, who is a…read moresports medicine doctor, for my hip injury. He works at a clinic with several other specialists. I decided to schedule an appointment in Morristown since it was my 1st visit, it was highly suggested that I visit the clinic that has technicians available to do X-rays and there's also a radiology center in case if we need to order a MRI. I like this location very much since every specialist is in reach and there's complimentary flavored coffee in the suite. However for Starbucks lover like myself, there's Starbucks in the 1st floor as soon as you enter the building. There's also plenty of parking and they also open on Saturdays. Getting back to Dr. McInerary, I wish I was referred to him earlier. He is nice, well mannered and seems very knowledgeable. He referred me to pt in Hackensack on rt 17 for aqua therapy. I'm am schedule to see him in 2 months in the Clifton office since it's much closer to home. He does work in the evenings in Clifton which is perfect for folks who work during the day. I'm also very impressed with the whole clinic. I was told they treated NFL Jets and NJ Devils team. The staffing in Morristown location is friendly and professional.

She scheduled me for the following Monday at 1:15pm and gave me an appointment card indicting the date and time of my appointment. I took another half day off the following Monday and arrived at 12:30. This time I was told that they had no record of my appointment. They in fact went as far as telling me that I had no-showed my previous appointment. It was only after I gave them the reason why we had to reschedule and showed them the appointment card that they admitted the female employee had seemingly not entered the information from my previous and current appointment in the computer. They asked me to wait so that they could fit me in as soon as possible. I indicated that I had to pick up my son from school at 4:15 and thus I couldn't stay if I was not admitted within a couple of hours but they assured me I would be done long before that. After waiting until 3:00 and still with no sign of me being called in I requested my prescription back. I gave a physical description of the woman who had scheduled me for that day and showed them the card, asking whose handwriting it was, but no one seemed able or willing to identify her. As a result I have now lost 2 half-days from work (not to mention I had to wait an extra 2+ hours before it being confirmed that I would not be seen that day) due to the incompetence of their schedulers when making appointments and I still haven't even had my MRI done. Perhaps they should raise the requirements for hiring schedulers beyond (barely) speaking English in order to ensure that appointments are honored. After about 2 weeks, all correspondence to them regarding this is still going unanswered with not so much even a call back for an apology or rationalization of their incompetent schedulers.

Fast forward 14 years and now I needed the next two levels to be fused. Dr. Gatto's practice was out of network for my health insurance, however, I had high hopes since he was recommended by my pain management doctor, Dr. Rubinfeld. I did not mind paying the out of pocket charges since I was in a great deal of pain and I was under the impression I was going to be fixed. We had discussed having the procedure in June of 2023. The last time I saw Dr. Gatto was May 9th, 2023. Dr. Gatto wanted to fuse the next two levels in order to correct the issue. I never heard back from Dr. Gatto or the practice regarding my surgery. I left numerous messages for Dr. Gatto's PA to call me back to schedule my surgery but had zero success. Fortunately, I was referred to Dr. Scott Katzman in West Orange, NJ. After 6 months of fighting with the insurance, Dr. Katzman's practice had my procedure finally approved and I had my surgery in December of 2023. Now, while Dr. Gatto's practice never called me back to schedule my surgery, they still would like me to pay $166 in charges not covered by my health insurance. Imagine that, wasting months of my time with doctor visits to their office only to have them not call me back and then demand I pay for an unfinished job. I do not recommend this practice.
