At the end of the High Street and surrounded by pubs stands Holy Trinity Church.
I keep passing and have thought it interesting from the outside. It appears to have walls made of flint and pebbles..quite unusual for the area.
Also on the outside is a huge clock similar to those on railway stations.
Today I had 10 mins before an appointment across the road and I saw a sign that said it was always open and welcome inside so I went in.
The very first thing that hits you as you step inside (other than I shut the outer door to find myself in pitch black groping for the inner) is a loud ticking. A huge clock stands on the floor and it says it is to remind us of time passing and getting nearer to God. I t also says that this clock runs the outside clock which is there as a curtesy to shoppers.
Close by is the smallest font I have ever seen. Stone with a small top border and a cover. Rows of pews lead to the alter and an unremarkable rererdos with a stained glass window above depicting angels. Also a small pulpit and some rather nice arch work.
The roof is of timber and looks like an unturned ship..rather nice.
I didn't see anything really noteable but then I only had a few minutes in there so may have to go again.
There was a sign saying holy water and a container on the wall that looked like it might hold a thimble full but it was empty. I shall have to go again and see if dipping a finger in it reduces me to a pile of dust. read more
