I want to be an educator so the teacher required us students to go to a place we wouldn't usually go and experience that nervousness that some immigrant children might feel when they come to school in the US, away from friends and family, immersed in a different language. So I had to attend a church service. I didn't know what to expect when I first drove into the driveway. I did feel a little out of place since I am Buddhust, and I did feel kind of conspicuous as an Asian in a predominantly white church. But everyone was really friendly. One of the musicians said "we won't try to convert you", after hearing about my assignment. At least five people shook my hand and said hi. I definitely think all the religions of the world can work together to bring peace to this war-torn, poverty-stricken world. Some people may say that the worst problems of the world are caused by religion (those like Mao Ze Dong of China who renounced religion also did a lot of harm) but I think peace can also be found within religion. I'm still Buddhist! But all religions of the world have a lot of common. So, here's to peace for all people of the world!

My friend who lives in Ukiah went with me and she has returned several times, joined their Bible study and brought her parents. Spanish Mass on Saturday at 6.30 PM and Confession afterwards at 7.00 PM on Thursdays.

Inside it was quiet and peaceful, a respite from the Mendocino busyness, and a nice quiet moment ensued. This church is beautiful inside - gorgeous wooden pews, more modern stained glass, and a seascape mural you will probably not find in any other Catholic Church! The church dates from 1852 and is the oldest parish in Mendocino County.

If there is a community there, I couldn't find it. They have no ministries, no liturgical ministry, the same person does the readings every Sunday. The music ministry (which I tried to join, having extensive professional experience as a paid musician in the Honolulu Diocese). The person in charge would not play the music as written and seemed to resent any attempt from me to advise. No after church coffee. I'm pretty good with people who have a thick dialect, you run into that a lot if you live in California. But try as I might I could not understand the priests Indian accent. Sometimes a hearing device will help, but they don't appear to have one. No signage, anyway. I don't know how the largely Hispanic population deals with it. After mass, everyone runs off quickly, which is probably due to this being a largely working class parish. So there is never an opportunity to chat. I am deeply disappointed with my inability to become part of this Parish.

We found that success in Pastor Jim Lujan, his wife Sheri and members of the Calvary Chapel Clearlake congregation. For more than 25 years the Lujans have been serving the local community. I especially like the way the Pastor teaches by going through the Bible sequentially, book-by-book.
