The newest national cemetery, dedicated in 2014, Yellowstone provides a unique look into how these…read moresites begin, grow, and are maintained. From visiting older national cemeteries predating the genesis of the national veterans cemetery, I had a great opportunity to hear about the process and see how they've evolved. It's so new, that in addition to recent burials for which there's still no headstone, there's a spot as you come in, where the crypts are still visible, aligned, and soon will be covered with grass. It's a view not often available with respect to how these cemeteries create the precise placement of the sites and headstones. It's also somewhat sobering. I had the chance to speak with the Post Commander from the American Legion and his wife, both of whom have been involved from the beginning in getting state and federal approval for Montana to have a National Cemetery of its own. They explained the process, the plans for expanding the cemetery, increasing the columbarium niches, how those veterans who've left the state have opted to come back to be buried here and told me the stories of a couple of veteran "notables". It was an opportunity for a look-behind the scenes at learning what is involved with these places that honor our veterans. The land was donated to the state. Yellowstone National Cemetery is the first of many more new National Cemeteries authorized by Congress. This location seems empty compared with others, but it's only an illusion, I think. It's a nice location.

As I drove by on Central, what captured my attention were the military markers. The same white precise layout as in standalone military cemeteries. With the opening of the national veterans cemetery in Laurel, I didn't expect to see many "new" markers. I was wrong. Near each of these were small holes for placing flowers or flags or other mementos. A nice touch. Back behind the military section, is the civilian section and it seemed to go on forever. What stood out to me were the grave markers. They all seemed enormous and intricate in both pattern and wording. Had I not known this was a cemetery, I would have believed I was in a museum of sculpture art. Of course there were the smaller plots marked out for families, the in-ground markers, the traditional early 20th century size markers, and the huge monoliths, but overall most were large, eye-catching and sometimes imposing. I found this to be the most incredible cemetery. Some of the newer markers had pictures of the person, bringing visitors back to an acknowledgment that for as beautiful as the setting, it's still a place for remembering a life. It's history here.

I spoke with the director lady on this topic to be sure, and she confirmed it. Even with a clergy statement regarding religious beliefs, the Y still won't allow an exemption for your kiddo. It's disappointing, to say the least, and in a post COVID world I think it's crazy to still think that way. And I think the Y doesn't recall that they are supposed to be Christian.... It's right there in the name guys.

I never have to worry about how they're being treated or whether or not they're safe. It is a large facility with a lot of kids divided into segregated age-based classes. They do have a strict policy about calling ahead of time if you're going to be late dropping your child off (due to staffing reasons, as it was explained to me). I imagine that they probably need to be rigid about certain policies like that since they have such a large number of attendees and are also obligated to follow state law (# of kids : # of care providers). I would recommend Kid Kountry to anyone looking for care for their kiddo.
