Even though I no longer live in the area, every time I fly up, I always bring a suitcase full of produce back to Washington, DC with me, because the prices just can't be beat. Kurtzhal's offers great stuff for such great prices! Really. In the fall expect to get squash a few for $1, bushels of peppers for a few dollars, and tons of other great finds. My daughter and I were having a good time shopping and picking out plants. Everything was great until it wasn't. When we got to the checkout we had a couple cut in front of us and I called them out to move to the back of the line to only be informed that these people have previously checked out and wanted to get something else quickly. The cashier didn't ask them to move to the back of the line of people waiting but continued to help them anyways. Which wasn't the worst part of my experience. My daughter was looking for yard decorations and wanted to show me something she thought was cool when a worker yelled across the room "HEY LITTLE GIRL DONT TOUCH THAT!!" Then continued to bend down and get close to my daughters face (who was already froze from being yelled at by some crazy old lady) and continued to tell her the item she was showing me was SO expensive and she would break it if she keeps messing with it. I told the lady she was fine meaning SHE'S OBVIOUSLY NOT GOING TO TOUCH IT ANYMORE and she looked at me and said "NO ITS NOT FINE" and continued telling her the $30 item cannot be touched by children and wouldn't stop until I told the women I GOT IT!! My daughter is 5. She was in my 5 year olds face and is incredibly lucky I didn't get into hers. My first initial thought was to leave my entire cart and let the rude employee put away the flowers I was shopping for but I ended up buying it so I could just get out of there. She completely ruined our experience and day after that with her horrible attitude. She was brunette wearing a bandana or whatever it was around her forehead. She wasn't nice, she didn't ask nicely, she surely doesn't know how to talk to children or to be professional. So if you have kids and enjoy going to greenhouses with them DO NOT COME HERE. They don't know how to treat little kids. ALSO most of their plants are diseased (zinnias, etc.) so buy with caution if you do happen to go here

I went in today to get my refund & they treated me horribly, like it was my fault! Kept saying it wasn't their fault, it was a computer glitch, questioned me beyond about the purchases, I had to walk Holly the mgr back to begonias to prove their mistake! And they charged me for items I didn't purchase & acted like they didn't believe me. I'll never shop there again. Left & had a hair appt, telling them about it and my stylist said SAME THING happened to her @Ruhligs, they tried to overcharge her when she knew the price and they argued with her til she had to walk them to the dirt to prove it. Never have I had such poor customer service. Had a mix up at Meijer & manager offered me an $20 gc even when I said it wasn't necessary. Very nice. Even after I told Ruhligs it's a 40 minute RT drive to their store. Nothing! So check your receipt before you leave. Thank you.

There's also arrows on the ground to help direct traffic in the greenhouses but they're easily missed. I will say after having been on a Tuesday, an hour after opening, the parking situation could be better, a lot better. It's tight because the place is so popular. We were almost hit trying to park. Yes, it is a longer walk for me, but that doesn't mean in is for others, so that doesn't make me bias. Today I got lemonade from 321 and waffle fries from Cheesesteak Institute of America. The lemonade was home made and perfectly made. The lady was SO nice to customers. I can say the same for Cheesesteak Institute of America. The worker was so nice to us and our dog! If your looking for big pumpkins, this is where you go. They started with 150 pumpkins weighing 170 pounds and larger, and 90% of them were gone in 3 1/2 days. Pumpkins of varying sizes and shapes weighing 25-100+ pounds cover the lawn, and there's a photo opp spot to capture this year's pumpkin patch memory. Bird's also has decorative pumpkins in many colors, including white, yellow, blue, pink, and some with lace patterns. Swan gourds are one of my favorites because you can dry and turn them into bird houses. You'll also find small various colored gourds, pie pumpkins, and acorn squash. On another note, you can pick raspberries or purchase them already picked. The family who runs Bird's (bet you can guess their name!) is friendly and helpful, don't price gouge, and make us want to come back year after year. Head on over and pick up your pumpkins before they're all gone. That happened to us one year when we waited too long!
