Came to this hotel around Noon on a Thursday. I decided on this place because it was about a 10…read moreminute walk from my boyfriend's house. I've also been here before for their hourly specials. You could ask for a room here for an hour and it's only $10 bucks. That's like super cheap. In my area you get the same deal but you have to buy at least 3 hours. The Asian dude in the front office was hard to understand. I asked him how much for a room for the whole night. He said it was $45 dollars. In all honesty I thought it was too much. I imaged paying him $30. So I asked if he can go any lower. He said $40 but I can't have anyone spend the night. I was like that's fine. Went to my room. It wasn't the flashiest. Basically a bed, a table with two chairs, a flat screen TV, and the bathroom. First thing I noticed is that I only had 1 blanket in the room. So I went back to the front desk and asked the Asian dude for another blanket. He told me there's one already in the room and if your still cold turn on the heater. So I went back to my room to find out the heater wasn't working. Well at least the TV. had basic cable so I watched TV. for a bit. Left the room around 1pm came back to the room around 4pm with my boyfriend. I was stopped by the Asian guy. He was yelling out, "One, One" I told him he's not spending the night he's just going to chill in the room for a few hours. The dude seem to understand and went back. I think the dude owns the place and lives in one of the hotel rooms. So my boyfriend and I did our thing and I took him back home around 7p.m. Getting back to my room it was actually getting kind of cold. You can hear those San Fernando winds blowing. I looked out the window but the view is not worth it. It was just of the airport across the street. My friend called so I started talking to him on the phone. I wasn't sure but I think someone was bagging against my wall to tell me to shut up or just people banging. It was kind of fun looking out my window and seeing how every hour different people leave and come into the hotel. Feel asleep watching the Food Network. Woke up left my room around 8a.m. to do some errands. Came back around 9:30am to the Asian guy reminding me that check out time is at 11a.m. So I got back to my room showered, watched a little TV. and checked out. Overall, I think this place is good. I mean it's hard to beat $10 bucks and hour. Also it's the only hotel on this street that I know has cable and flat screen TVs. Also I mean I paid $40 for a night at a hotel. My friends told me that's about average price. Only thing that messed up my stay was the Asian dude being like a "Big Brother" watching over me. He made my boyfriend uncomfortable when he told us I couldn't have any guest over. He even told me to pay the Asian dude the additional cost for having an additional person spend the night. I was like No, your not spending the night so there should be no additional cost. I've been to two other hotels in the same street, so far this one is the cleanest looking one. I might try another one next time, if I do choose to stay in that area for any reason.

No ants, roaches, fleas, etc. The towels smelled like bleach. The stairwell didn't smell like pee as stairwells are inclined to do. 2) Comfort. A/C worked. Though the shower head was even with my nose, the water was hot, clean, with good pressure. Though the bed was harder than Epstein at a Build-a-Bear, I slept fine, especially with the thin pillows, which I fold around so much at night I end up with a beautiful origami swan in the morning. The room was not cramped. Best of all it had a "wood" floor, so I could walk around barefoot. 3) Customer Service. The dude was friendly. They accommodated my late check-in (9pm) without giving my room away. 4) Wifi. It worked. 5) Other things I liked: coffeemaker, refrigerator, iron/ironing board, free parking. I may have had a microwave, I don't recall. I liked the rolling desk chair, though I doubt the people below me did. A few notes. Noise. I had the last room on a Monday night, and never heard my neighbors, though that might be different on a weekend. Outside, you might hear the cars on the nearby freeway or pneumatic tools from the mechanic next door. Parking. It's free! (yay) But there were only five tight spots in the back that require a 16 point turn to get out. The tenants on the bottom floor parked their cars in front of their room so the lane to the lot is very tight. View. I looked out my window and saw it was going to be a Goodyear. And a Michelin. And a Firestone. Yes, it is a mountain view: a mountain of tires next door. And the intersection traffic. And the freeway a block away. It's probably too expensive for them to plant tall cyprus trees on the border of their property, so maybe they could just paint trees on the window. Location. Well, it's freeway close, that's for sure. It's across the street from a liquor store, which is handy. There's a taco place open past midnight within 400 feet. And a lot of chain fast food restaurants and coffee places are a block down Foothill. Other things to see in beautiful Sylmar, nicknamed the "top of Los Angeles", which got its ironic name for the latin words of forest (silva) and sea (mar): Nethercutt Museum (classic autos and musical instruments), the famous Casades spillway that ends the 340 mile journey of LA Aqueduct water, and the piece of fallen highway from the 1971 earthquake that the Doobie Brothers posed with for their album The Captain and Me. You can watch the Sylmar Hang Gliding Association on Gridley Street near Shimshaw. They have equestian centers and recreation parks. And just a mile from Value Inn is the San Fernando Swap Meet (Th-Sun). Considering this in the adult film capital of the world I have to wonder what they swap there.

This hotel was perfect since I really just needed a place to stay, but it is a budget hotel, so keep that in mind when you book. The bed was very comfortable and the air conditioning worked maybe a little too well. As other reviewers have noted, the carpet is definitely outdated and there are definitely parts of the hotel that are showing signs of wear. Other reviews mentioned the stacked parking, but when we came it wasn't very busy so we were able to find spots without having to worry about blocking anybody in or having to move our car. However I imagine if you come on a weekend it's a little more difficult. The area around is a little rough, but the garage is heavily monitored and we were able to leave stuff in our car without issue. We asked for a quiet room which didn't face the street, which we got, but I think the room faced some sort of playground because in the morning we would hear children laughing and playing so it wasn't so quiet in the early afternoon (luckily we were not in the room for too long) I appreciate how there is a microwave and a decent size fridge in the room which made it great for when we brought food along. One bummer is that we never got housekeeping. They stopped by really early and we told them to come back, but they never did. Since we were only there for two nights it wasn't a huge deal, but it would have been nice to get our rooms cleaned.

Great location and free parking are definite highlights. However, the room left a lot to be desired…read more-- the AC unit was old and extremely loud, and the room had a persistent stale odor, likely from dirty or clogged filters that need cleaning or replacing. A solid choice for convenience, but room maintenance needs serious attention.

If you are Asian, I strongly recommend you do not stay here. We arrived after a long trip with two young kids, completely exhausted -- the kind of exhaustion where you can barely stand or walk. We checked in and went up to our assigned room on the 3rd floor... only to find that someone was already inside the room. Let that sink in. We literally opened the door and found another guest already occupying it. That is not just unacceptable -- it is a serious safety issue. We went back downstairs, shocked and frustrated. While we were standing there waiting, the front desk guy was checking in another guest and was extremely friendly to her, smiling and handing her a bag of goodies -- while completely ignoring us, even though we were clearly waiting and had just reported a major issue. Then another staff member came over -- rude, cold, and with zero apology -- and simply clicked around on the computer and handed us a new room key like we were the problem. The replacement room was facing the freeway, and the noise was unbearable. We could not sleep at all. Between the dangerous room assignment, the complete lack of professionalism, and the blatant discriminatory behavior, this hotel deserves zero stars. I have stayed in many hotels -- this was by far the most disrespectful and disturbing experience. Avoid this place.

So here's an honest review,…read more pros: it was a very cheap hotel and for someone like me who had to get smtg very last minute with not a lot in the bank, it was perfect, I was staying there to go to a convention down the street and it was only 10 min which was great, website says no private parking (from what I remember) but there is an area to park in the back, it's gated and you have to press a button to get in or out which me and my friend were very happy about, the fridge was pretty nice, not a mini fridge, it had two different doors for reg fridge and a freezer, lots of drawers and cabinet space, tv worked well, bed was comfortable and pillows were comfortable and the locks on the doors were electric so you need a card to get in. Cons: there were stains all over our sheets, nothing crazy but more like stuff you can't really get out (coffee, wine, etc) but one of these sheets had someone's name written on it with a pen?? To us, it looked like they just didn't change that sheet, pillows had stuff on it too, we ended up going to get pillow cases to cover them, I personally didn't see bed bugs but we did have an encounter with two roaches, one dead and one alive, they are the size of horse fly, one of the drawers had nerds clusters in it and it looked like some of the nerds were on the floor too, there was a medical cabinet that had an old bag in there with god knows what, someone got a arrested the first night we stayed there, lots of yelling and threats (also would like to add this was not in their control and the front desk did call the cops), when I was checking in, the man asked if I wanted to see the room I said yes and when leaving he asked if I was staying alone and as a younger fem presenting person, this made me very uncomfortable for a older man to ask me this, I thought it was inappropriate and made me feel unsafe before I even got the key to the room, very thin walls, we were right next to the kitchen and could hear everything, I didn't want to take a pic for their privacy but also in the kitchen there were these couches and there looked to be a homeless person sleeping on one, there is absolutely no security on the grounds aside from the cameras and the gate and for this hotel being in a "rough" neighborhood, I feel like it's needed to insure the safety of their guests and also I don't know if this is just a hotel or not, it almost seemed like it was part hotel and part apartment complex, not really a bad thing but just thought it was strange Over all, would I stay here again, most likely not. The cons outweigh the pros too much I don't think I will ever come back unless needed too, there were other hotels with similar rates nearby that I'd rather not come back to this one.
