It has 146 places in 36 rooms, from two person rooms and small dormitories. There is a separate news wing which can be self contained for large groups. Meals are served in one of two cafeterias, there are self catering kitchens, and the reception also has a small bar. Rooms come with bedding but towels can be hired for £2. Most of the beds are single bunks. The hostel has two lounges, one in the grand main part of the house. The hostel has a large car park but it's just a ten minute walk into the village with its pubs and shops. Take a torch if you want to walk back at night as the drive from the road to the house is unlit. It is very well heated - there's also a drying room for wet rigs after walking or cycling if you get caught in rain. I stayed recently as part of a large group. The rooms are basic and practical, but comfortable enough. Only hand soap is provided so bring shower gel and shampoo. Meals were ok but definitely canteen food - but staff were helpful and friendly. Breakfast includes Continental and English versions with veggie options catered for. Overall, it offered very good value accommodation.

If you treat the hostel as though you are still prison and keep yourself out of mischief you will have no problems. For some people it is hard to intergrate back into society but the hostel staff will support you all the way. Be prepared to do certain tasks through Manchester College but its only a couple of mornings a week and it is for your own good and not for the good of the hostel. Rooms are adequate for your needs and they are a lot better than been stuck in a prison cell. The hostel is clean and comfortable. The location is quiet and peaceful. There is good free car…read moreparking and the hostel is only a few minutes walk from the town centre with its shops and bars. The dorm room that we stayed in conveniently had en-suite toilet and shower. However you need to vacate your room at 1030 and you are not allowed back into it until 1700 (due to no staff during the day). There is a breakfast included (but no bread). Bedding is included for an extra 5 pounds in the smaller dorm rooms (but no towels). There is a computer with free internet (but no Wi-Fi). You can use the kitchen which is clean and has plenty of utensils (no meat allowed). There is a living room (but no TV). Overall I would say our stay was a peaceful, pleasant but somewhat spartan experience. It is operated more in the spirit of youth hostels of old rather than the comfortable backpacker hostels that are ubiquitous in popular destinations worldwide. And with the policy of 1030 kicking out time Mama Wierdigans is indeed aptly named.

This hostel was ideally located - right in the city centre, a short, clean, modern tram ride from…read morethe train station, and on a quaint little dead end alleyway that meant it was quiet as well. I stayed in what is one of my favorite room types when I travel...a small, cozy, solo room with a shared bath. The kind of room that has a bed (in this case a twin), a little table or desk, a chair and enough room for a suitcase and that's about it. The bathroom was shared by three similar rooms (including mine) and cleanliness and easy access was never a problem (in a pinch, there are other bathrooms available throughout the hostel.) There are also dorms and larger rooms available, but my room hit my sweet spot between comfort and budget for a short stay. The shared kitchen (closed overnight) was also sizable and well-equipped and the lounge area beyond it was cozy with the rain pitter pattering on the roof. Solid WiFi guaranteed downstairs; upstairs connectivity varies.

Other amenities they have are laundry (5-6 pounds as I recall), a bar, free coffee/tea all day, UK adapters at the front desk and a decent breakfast for 1 pound donation to charity. The price for this hostel is good and if you go to their website directly and click on special offers they had a an additional discount. Minor negatives are no lift/elevator and they did not have someone at the desk 24 hours a day. Overall, an excellent hostel that I would recommend.

Stayed here for a weekend for a bit of hiking and a spooky Halloween party; the story is that the…read moreplace is haunted but I didn't encounter the ghost that hangs out in the car park, even on Halloween night. The hostel is perfectly located so that you can jump right onto a number of hiking trails, and is right by a scenic stream. The building itself is attractive and they've divided up the space so that there is plenty of common space on the ground floor and a large TV lounge upstairs. There's also an annex with additional rooms and another kitchen, as well as plenty of outdoor seating. Rooms typically had about 6 beds; the beds were kind of hard but I didn't really notice after being exhausted from a day of hiking and a long night of partying. One odd thing was that they had a number of showers hidden behind fire doors that had no indication that you should enter. It was definitely better equipped/organised than a lot of hostels I've stayed at plus very clean. A great base for some local trekking, but like all hostels, not so good for those who are picky about sharing.

They put a roof over my head for nerly two weeks for very little money and they severed really cheap quality breakfast as well. The staff in here were really nice and very easy to get a long with. They were very interested in what I was studying at college and made me for really welcome. They keep all of the rooms very clean and too a very high standard. I would recommend the YMCA to anybody who needs a place to stay.
