10/10. This is by far and wide the best mixology / cocktail class I've ever taken (and I've taken a few). My husband got my friend and I the class for Christmas and I wasn't sure what to expect, but we had an absolute blast. Devin is extremely engaging, keeps things fun, but is also extremely informative. I learned a TON and really appreciated being able to use the science to build my own cocktail rather than following a recipe card that I would eventually file away and forget about. Her method of teaching and the feedback along the way to perfect your creation was such a unique and fun experience. She also told some great stories with humor along the way that helped to solidify the concepts. I walked out thinking two things: 1) Wow, can I really just concoct ideas without googling recipes!? The BEST class I have ever taken in my entire life. If you are looking for a fun mixology class, Devin IS YOUR GIRL!!! I went with my friends to this class for a birthday and had the most fun ever. Devin is so fun and knows her stuff! She spent some time at the beginning talking through some of the science behind cocktails which was super intriguing, informative, and entertaining! Then we were able to make 3 cocktails of our own choosing with the different alcohols, flavored bitters and tinctures, natural sweet juices, and other mixers. Then Devin one-by-one tasted everyone's cocktail to add suggestions that drastically improved a good cocktail into a phenomenal cocktail. It was honestly such an incredible experience that I would highly recommend to anyone and everyone! Tldr: very impressed, really fun time, and would 100% do again. I took my friend for his birthday and we both had an amazing time! Devin had everything prepared and ready to go when we arrived and had amazing energy to get us in the mood to make our own drinks. Something I did not fully realize going into this class (but appreciated after the fact), is that everyone had autonomy to make our own drinks- they were not prescribed to us. That way we were able to make drinks we were interested in. Devin broke down the chemistry behind making cocktails and explained how our body handles taste and temperature differences in drinks. Liquors available: -vodka -gin -tequila -whiskey There were also a variety of sweet and savory mixers she had prepared (such as cold brew, tart cherry juice, mango juice, and more), along with a wide variety of bitters and garnishes. The part I was most impressed by (besides her really fun personality and way of explaining cocktails) was that she offered to sample each person's drink they made and with pin-point accuracy was able to tell people what to add/change to make the drink taste better. With her guidance, I'm really happy with how my drinks turned out and I learned a lot about how to make adjustments if I'm not happy with the taste of it! Transparently if you do a public class, you don't know which bar this is going to be held at until a week before the class, but it can be a fun way to branch out and try a new place. read more

Unfortunately, on his birthday, his sister unexpectedly passed away and he needed to leave IL to fly back to NY to be with his family and make arrangements for her funeral. I had read that there is a very strict cancellation policy, which is understandable, but I simply asked if there was any way we can reschedule. She basically told me I was SOL unless I found someone else to come to the class in our place. I even offered to send a death certificate/obituary as some kind of proof. I moved to Chicago 4 years ago and this is easily the best experience I have had since I moved here. Devin is not only a savant with cocktail making, but she is a fantastic educator, a warm person, and frankly just damn fucking entertaining. She breaks down the chemistry of cocktail making do that it's idiot proof, and then walks you through the basis of CREATING and modifying cocktails instead of just mastering cocktails out of a book. I don't leave many reviews because I'm not a huge fan of Yelp, but Devin absolutely deserves a 5-star review and then some! I signed my brother's bachelor party up for a class and it was incredible! As a bar manager, the best part was the simplification of how to make a quality cocktail. With endless energy and personality, Devin teaches how to blend flavors without getting too technical. What everyone ends with in just a couple hours is a great time and more knowledge in how to craft your own drinks at home. Quite frankly, I'm using one of my concoctions at my bar in the near future. My wife and I attended Devin Kidner's Mixology 101 class on 4/12/2019 at Declan's Irish Pub. The tickets were a gift from a friend and we went in not really knowing what to expect. Even over a relatively short two hours, it was clear that Devin really knows her stuff - the fact that she won the first mixology competition she entered as an amateur speaks to her abilities. The class was hands on, and while I consider myself a moderately experienced drinker, I am definitely an inexperienced bartender / mixologist. The point of the class was to experiment with mixers, bitters, muddle-ables and tinctures you may not find regularly in a bar, and, well, let's just say my "original" creations didn't turn out so hot. Devin tastes the students' offerings and makes suggestions, and while one of my cocktails was a lost cause, she was able to turn the other two into something palatable. My wife had better luck, and clearly won the night between the two of us. At the end of the night Devin offers small apothecary bottles of the home-made bitters and tinctures used for sale, and we ended up buying four of them (at $10 each) to play with at home. If you're looking to step up your mixology game, the Hollow Leg gets my endorsement. read more

I took a public mixology class from HOLLOW LEG and it was fun and educational - Devin really knows her stuff. She was also super funny and had a BIG personality, so everyone was laughing from the get-go. This is NOT your normal cocktail class (thankfully!): She teaches a lot about the science of mixology and how we perceive taste, and even though I consider myself a cocktail buff, it was a lot of things I had never heard of before. We made three cocktails in class that were customized to each person's palate, and I was super proud that each of my cocktails was better than the last. The class had a lot of couples and groups of friends, and she even hosts bachelorette parties and bachelor parties, as well as corporate and private events. We purchased tickets to the Saturday mixology class as a birthday gift and the class was amazing! The instructors were incredibly energetic and extremely passionate about mixology and the science behind it. The class was two hours long which allowed us to make three different cocktails and the instructors helped us tailor them to our taste buds! Our first try's were very safe but it round two we were encouraged to use multiple flavor profiles, mixers, and bitters to get an interesting cocktail that had depth. We ended up with one great cocktail and one terrible but we brought the bad one to Devon and she immediately walked us through the science of why the cocktail was too bitter and sour and was able to brighten the flavor and bring it back to a beautiful and enjoyable level! Overall WE LOVED THIS CLASS! Couldn't recommend a more free flowing class that gives you the basics and background to mixology. It's far from basic and boring so we will definitely be back! read more

SHADY OWNER & CANCELLATION POLICY- STAY AWAY...... I ordered tickets for a mixology class for my girlfriend and I, but she got covid two days before the class. I tried to email the owner, Devin, to reschedule our class, but she said she has a strict 7-day cancellation policy and that she couldn't reschedule or refund us, but we could transfer the tickets to someone else. So our options were to give the tickets away, show up and risk my girlfriend's health and the health of others in the class so we could get our money's worth, or just eat the tickets. How can someone possibly enforce a 7-day cancellation policy in today's post-covid world, knowing the CDC guidance is a minimum 5-day quarantine if you test positive? Her excuse was that she's a one-woman operation, and that all of her classes fill up fast. That doesn't make any sense. If they fill up so fast, why do you need to lock everyone in seven days in advance? Shouldn't you be able to easily refill those spots? Additionally, she mentioned 8 other couples in the same class we had tickets for requested to reschedule as well and she denied them all. So I have a feeling she is making a good amount of money off people who don't even end up getting to use their tickets. This policy is predatory and she is taking advantage of people. I ended up booking this class last minute as my original mixology class I had purchased as an anniversary gift for my boyfriend got cancelled (in retrospect, so happy it did!). I didn't know what to expect but the reviews were great and I had no other options so I figured why not! The class takes place in Devin (think Emma Stone in Easy A both looks & personality wise)'s condo. If you take it during nice weather, you get the amazing opportunity to participate in this class on her rooftop which is unreal-- BEAUTIFUL view of the city! If not, then you`ll take it in her condo (which is also quite nice). Instead of giving you instructions on how to make specific cocktails (old fashioned, etc) she teaches you the general art of mixology. There are tables set up around the rooftop with various sugars, juices, bitters & tinctures, as well as fresh herbs to muddle. She instructs you on how much of each table's contents to utilize, and then helps you with ideas and problem solving (seriously- she can fix any terrible drink you create) along the way! You leave with a good buzz as you have between 3-4 drinks during the event. The crowd was also very enjoyable, during our sessions it was a mix of young couples (late 20s/early 30s) as well as pairs of female friends (mid 30s?).
