Unfortunately, Jackie Anstice of Holiday Ark provided a poor service, verging on neglectful.Â
During a week away, I had sought out a professional pet-sitter rather than relying on my usually very helpful friends, as my two cats require steroid tablets. Missing this medication can cause cats to become gravely ill. I made it clear to Ms Anstice at the time of agreeing her company's service that whilst I was flexible in all other respects, it was not an option for the cats to miss any dose of their tablets.
Ms Anstice and I discussed this face-to-face in advance, I emailed written instructions before departure, and a printed copy (with day of week, date, and dosage information) was left in the kitchen for reference.
Ms Anstice did not give the tablets on time - both cats missed at least one dose in her own words. However, she only wrote to inform me two days later, remarking that 'they were hiding under the bed today and we're [sic.] determined not to come out no matter how much encouragement so no tablets given' and stated she 'would not be able to stay for as long as it takes if they go into hiding'.
When my phone call to her was unanswered, I wrote to her reiterating how important it was for the cats not to miss their tablets.
Ms Anstice threatened with 'I ... feel that the best place would be for them to be boarded with your vet as I will not be held liable.' I was even more concerned: if unable to encourage the cats from under the bed to administer tablets, how could she hope to transport them to the vet to board them?
Overall, her reports were curt and troubling. They described my cats as behaving in ways that were highly out of character (and which no previous carer of theirs has described), including scratching, hiding, vomiting, and soiling in rooms other than the bathroom where their litterbox was kept.
Both cats had lost a lot of weight, but I am relieved they were not harmed more. Since Ms Anstice holds herself out as a professional carer, I was very disappointed that she not only had seemed unable to give cats their medication, but also that she had been prepared to easily give up the responsibility that she had undertaken. read more
