I am an ex student from Holden High. I was a sophomore who had come out as transgender as an 8th grader so I immediately became a "token tr**ny" that all the girls wanted to be around. Then once I got on estrogen prescription and began to "blossom" , every. single. male. student. literally. 100%. Began s**ually harassing me, all day long my entire junior year, and nobody believed me or validated me any time I told staff, let alone held any of these boys accountable. Other ways my transition was micromanaged included being told what makeup was unacceptable, obsessing over me like a token all the way up to having me graduate valedictorian when I barely passed a single math class but somehow had the highest GPA 3.89. oh, I also didn't choose my own name. The school took a fun vote, cursing my adulthood with family who can't break the habit of my high school name despite our family being extremely close. The trauma and indoctrination hit each of us differently, and in my situation it took me so many years to find a true name for myself, so it is what it is. In terms of academic curriculum, the curriculum for literature was pretty average in the English classes usually, but in history classes and science classes there was never a dull moment. We learned a lot that many public high schools would have only taught with morbid archaic animal corpse dissections. Holden didn't dissect frogs etc when I was a student but I'm much older now, it's been over a decade since I graduated "valedictorian". The school is legally legitimate under California state laws, but I feel like in no way shape or form was I being prepared for college, working, etc. I'm not saying my parents didn't raise me to be a positive influence in my community, but for the tuition cost combined with all the bizarre things to supposedly help us like a field trip where we took our resumees out to go apply for jobs with the goal of getting rejected as many times as possible. Or requiring sophomore students to successfully acquire jobs and internships, even though most sophomores are age 15 and not legally old enough to work, but I was told not to charge for my clients for tarot readings despite the fact that none of my clients were involved with Holden in any way shape or form, I literally had no friends. At one point I was hospitalized from the immense stress of not being able to get the male students to stop s**ually harassing me. I almost missed Christmas with my family because of that. I rarely felt safe on campus. On one occasion a student poured an entire backpack full of bullets onto the table while we were unattended while the teacher had to grab a stapler from the front office. Another male student came in threatening to bomb the place. They calmed him down but he faced zero consequences at school, not even detention. And he stalked me online after I graduated so he clearly didn't get sent to prison. There were at least 2 instances of racist graffiti in the hallways even though they had a graffiti room for legitimate graffiti art in a consensual, legal, respectful and relatively safe environment compared to illegal graffiti on the streets. Overall, I think this sets up a clear picture of circa 2008-2011. I would not recommend this school for any child, especially not any GLBTQ child. I would also not recommend this school for any disabled child, whether it be physical, developmental, psychiatric etc. I would not recommend this school for any child that comes from a family with a genetic predisposition for substance addiction. There is no child I can imagine truly being safe at this school, completely regardless of academic factors. It breaks my heart to write this, but I hope this truth not only sets me free, but helps set free other survivors of what I consider to be reminiscent of a cult founded in an obsession with political correctness that runs so deep it restricts any sort of humanity from any student that doesn't fit a premeditated blueprint of tokenism and performative allyship. Please don't send your kids here. I promise you that not everything that sparkles is a star worth a wish if the sun froze. read more
