My life usually revolves around ice cream. Of late I've been on a Hawaiian shaved ice kick--probably inspired by my April vacation to Waikiki Beach. Anyway, while visiting family here I made a search for shaved ice places and found Hokulia. It's awesome! I've come half-a-dozen times now. I've come by myself, I've come with grandchildren, and I've brought the family. Thank you for such an awesome treat. I just wish you wouldn't close for the season. This place serves true shaved ice . Very casual hangout place near dicks parking lot. Service was friendly and helpful. Definitely shareable portions , the " shortboard" is most certainly enough for 2 ppl , and not expensive . Ordered the allcolada , that was delicious . They have children sized portion as well. There is a whole lot of yes going on here. I feel, however, that I need to tell you all that this is a seasonal joint that's mostly open from Memorial Day to Labor Day. So you're probably going to have to wait until summer rolls round again before getting your shave on. I rolled up on the last day of the season. There was a little celebration going, but the main attraction was the shave ice. They try to do everything as authentic to Hawaii as possible, so you're looking at a shave ice, not a snow cone or ground ice. It's finely shaved, and topped with flavor with the option of adding ice cream or sweet milk, or whatever else you might find on the islands. Let me say this: come hungry. I spent $3 or so on the "shortboard" size and it was more than enough heft for my belly. To be shared, for sure. I can't imagine having a longboard, or heaven forbid, a Big Kahuna size. Eesh! Massive props to the kind owner for saying hi. And the adorable gals in line in front of me. It was a long line last night for closing night (45 mins) but I chatted with a teen and her tween sister (and sometimes their younger brother) about Disney Cruise lines, Alaska, summer camp, drill team, and the best flavors. These gals were Hokulia regulars and helped with the flavor choice. Tiger's blood is the champion, every time. read more

What a fun alternative to the traditional ice cream treat. We stopped by on a whim. It's tucked away in the corner of the Chevron station next to Smith's. We caught them right before closing and we're delighted to see it lit with colorful string lights making it a nice place to sit and enjoy our treat. We ordered "the local" with banana coconut ice and a macadamia ice cream center topped off with a "snow cap" drizzled sweetened condensed milk. It was a delicious flavor combination. Serve was great. The young man who helped us guided our flavor selection since it was our first time. What a great experience! We will be back before leaving town. read more

It was actually better than expected. I never thought that there would be much more to shaved ice but this place proved me wrong. Here you can upgrade your shaved ice to have ice cream, whipped cream, sour spray, etc. Lots of flavors! Aaah yes good times here. Nothing says summer is here more than chowing on a cold, refreshing Hokulia shave ice while soaking up the warmth of the setting sun. We went here quite a bit last summer. I'm surprised I didn't have a review for them. This is my absolute favorite place to get shave ice. Actually, in my opinion, it's the only place to get it. In the times I've been there, I've been set on one flavor before getting there, so I'm only familiar with allotta colada and tigers blood and my ultimate fave, Dakine ("the best" in Hawiian). Dakine is a mix of tigers blood and blue Hawaii....so pretty much, coconut, strawberry, watermelon, a little more coconut and Hawaiian punch mixed into a sinful mound of melt in your mouth snow. Ughhh yum! This time we got kiwi, apple and lime. We got the coconut ice cream in the middle and then had them top it with the snow cap drizzle. It was tasty! Slightly tart, mellowed out by the sweet snow cap and a bite of coconut ice cream. Snow cap is sweetened condensed milk and boy, it's goooood! I believe they also offer a sour spray like a spritz. I believe they have shaved coconut too. You don't have to get all the toppings or the ice cream filling. You can just get a cup of shaved ice with your choice of flavoring. You won't be disappointed no matter which way you go. The texture of shave ice is super velvety smooth. Instead of balling up into an ice cube after you've sucked all the flavor out, it melts in your mouth. It's choice! The sizes are are huge, humongous, and ginormous. Ginormous, meaning The Kahuna. It's the biggest. It's 9" of insanity piled in a flimsy plastic bowl. It was fun at first, but it got incredibly messy and sticky half way through. Two and a half of us split it, and couldn't finish it. That was even after literally half of it avalanched into the table. I wasn't sure if I needed napkins or the ski patrol to help clean it up. It was an experience that even though messy, no one should miss. Just bring some wet wipes. You have been warned. Now carry on my wayward son. Find your nearest Hokulia!! read more

Yesterday 7/13/2018 was my first time here with my kids and went back for seconds a few hours later AND had it for breakfast this morning and a second time for lunch later. I had tried Bahama Bucks before which is around the corner from here and it just wasn't a good first time experience for me. The flavors tasted funny to me and turned me off from shaved ice for a while. I work at Discover and saw that Hokulia was serving in one of our Departments. I didn't have any but thought I'd try some with my kids since there's one so close and I'm so glad we did! They do have tables that you can put your shaved ice cups in to prevent spilling which is genius and umbrellas to cover the tables but sometimes depending on the angle of the sun you'll still be in direct sunlight. Luckily today was gloomy for the most of the day but there is a tree we stand under to keep cool. Idk why I get so hot so easily but obviously other people might love that they get some sun. Will be going here for the foreseeable future! read more

45 minutes for ONE small shaved ice?!? They weren't even busy. Only 4 other customers were there tonight. When we asked for our money back because it was taking so long, we were denied. The 3 employees working the shack tonight looked dazed & confused as they made one shaved ice per 10-15 min. Not even exaggerating, as we times them. Worst shaved ice I've ever had and a 40 minute wait. The employees were very immature and we're playing games trying to build snow cones as tall as they could instead of serving customers. We waited 40 minutes for our snow cone and it was packed down and the ice was hard because the employee was trying to build it twice as high as it should have been. read more

These are the best snow cones. Very nice texture that holds the flavor in the ice instead of the syrup all collecting in the cup. Very crowded. They have done things to try to make the wait fun. The other night, I took my daughter for a treat, and they had a contest where whoever came up with the craziest name to call when their order was ready, won a free cone. They had 1,2,&3 prizes. Was very entertaining to hear what people came up with. My daughter won the 3rd place and we went tonight to have a nice treat after a long day. I mis-judged the time and thinking they were open until 11 got there at 10:30. One of the guys said he would go ahead and make her one anyway. I wasn't expecting that at all, as it looked like they were well on their way to being cleaned up. Anyway, kind of a long line, but worth it in my opinion. Very nice service every time I go there. I've been averaging 2 times a week with this heat. I can't believe the size snow cone you get for the price! The waiting entertainment is a good idea. Fun atmosphere for an inexpensive family treat night. I'll miss them this winter. Maybe they will do a hot chocolate stand. :-) read more

We have been coming here for 2 summers now. This is the best shave ice in Utah. They have rearranged their menu, but overall it is pretty much the same thing as before, just a different format. We love getting the ice cream in the center and a drizzle of sweetened condensed milk on top - (because pure syrup and shaved ice isn't sweet enough already! ;-)). They have some fun flavor combinations - the "808" is our fave, but there are so many good ones to choose! It could use a bit more attention to the outside sitting area during busy times, but other than that, a generally great place and worth the wait in line! They offer a rewards program and text you discounts which is great! For every dollar you spend, they give you so much to spend later which makes coming back that much more fun. They offer live entertainment on occasion or fun music pumped out over the crowd. read more
