Although I did not attend the university, both of my nieces have had graduation ceremonies held here. I currently have my youngest niece enrolled at Hofstra, who also had her HS graduation here, and my other niece had her college graduation held at Hofstra. I've been to the university several times, for graduation ceremonies, and to help cousins move into their dorms and moving out. The school is very easy to navigate. There's clear signs all throughout, and the parking lots of heavenly lit at night. There's always onsite security cruising around, which is a plus and gives that extra layer of protection that you, and your family who are attending are safe. The events, and student get togethers that I so often hear about are all planned by the student council, and they always seem well organized and though out, and fun might I add! You can always find something going on at the campus, planned and hosted by the students themselves. Emily, loves it here. She's forever ranting and raving about the events, meetings, after school events, bake sales, culture nights etc. All of which she helps to plan as she's the head of the student council. If you're a parent thinking to send your child here to further their education, no need to think twice. It's a great private school. The beautiful and historic Dutch estate has been ranked as a top schools in the US for many years in a row. You and your child will love and appreciate the history Hofstra has. read more

We visited Hofstra University for a cheerleading competition and had a great experience. The facility is very nice, well-maintained, and extremely accommodating for large events. There were great views throughout the venue, making it easy to enjoy the competition from any seat. The concession stands were convenient and well-stocked, and having plenty of free parking was a huge plus. Overall, Hofstra University is a fantastic location for events, and we would be happy to return. read more

I had the SHADIEST experience hosting a student teacher for them. The student was wonderful, however, unlike EVERY other college & university there is apparently NO compensation for all the time, professionalism & hard work one dedicates to their students, if they can help it. I was originally told I would receive 1.5 credits. Then it changed to a $500 stipend. Fast forward 2 mos and when I reached out about the $500 stipend, I was told since our contract was expired during the time period I hosted THEIR student, they're unable to offer me any compensation at all. I hope it was worth the $500 to lose future teachers ever accepting student teachers or student observers from their school. How they can accept $3-$4k per student in tuition, and then find a loophole to avoid compensating the actual people who educated their students for them is unconscionable. read more

Hofstra University was a deeply disappointing experience--while the campus is beautiful and Public Safety is outstanding, almost everything else fell short. Accessibility services were disorganized and unhelpful, accommodations weren't enforced, and the campus itself is not disability-friendly. Jewish life is practically nonexistent, the kosher food options were severely lacking (especially during COVID), and the Hillel community was cliquey and unsupportive. I was bullied, ignored by Title IX when I reported it, and shuffled between counselors, including one who was unprofessional and dismissive. Everything on campus is overpriced, and the support systems don't justify the high cost. Unless you can hand-pick your professors and fend for yourself in every area, this school is absolutely not worth it--look elsewhere for a better, more supportive college experience. read more

Drove from out of state for my son to attend a job fair to only be turned away because he wasn't enrolled as a student there. With no mention of it being a private event on their website and the vendors site. They chose not to even attempt to accommodate us considering the circumstances. I go to therapy at Hofstra and it is amazing they are so welcoming and warm me and my therapists play board games and talk it is so fun there is no rat infestation like in other reviews I recommend Hofstra a lot for school and therapy. read more

It has been a while since I left the school with my BBA so there is not much I can say other than I have been there a few times for events and the campus just keeps growing with plenty of new buildings and plenty of green space. The school continues the excellent reputation in both undergrad, graduate and law. They even have a new school of medicine. They have terrific athletic facilities and (though they have had their problems over the last few years,) have excellent programs. I have been to both Adam's playhouse and the Mack Center and throughly enjoyed my time. They have clearly made an effort to keep the facilities modernized (clean and fresh.) I will end with the statement that I am proud to be a Hofstra grad and I look forward to seeing the schools' continued succesful growth. read more

I didn't care for my experience as a Hofstra student nor as an alumni, from the business/customer service end. If you're from out of state or a different country and are just looking for a school close to NYC but still in a nice suburb, there are much, much better options. LIU Post, Adelphi, Molloy, Farmingdale State College, Five Towns, Pace over in Westchester County, and several more. Hofstra isn't in a great neighborhood (look up a few news articles out of Hempstead, NY), there's a huge turnpike that goes right through it which is also dangerous. It's not the university's fault, and they've built 3 unispans, but late on a weekend night coming back from the bars tipsy, the students don't use the unispans. It lacks a college town vibe, in my opinion. The fellow clientele are mostly spoiled Long Island locals. My own experience was horrendous because my academic advisor signed off on 4 semesters worth of useless credits for my degree. For example, to satisfy the social studies requirement, I signed up for eastern Europe, which in reality doesn't fulfill the core requirement, or my major (or minor for that matter). So was a complete waste. This happened with dozens of classes. I took them, my advisor signed off on it, I did well in the classes, but they were not useful to getting me to graduation or obtain my degree. The catastrophic debacle plunge my entire family into debt, because once my parents learned that a Hofstra professor signed off on these courses, they truly felt as though I was wronged and insisted on helping me. We went through all channels of the university seeking some type of compromise on this, since it was more than half their fault, and they wouldn't do a thing to lessen the financial burden. Their official response was "students find out from each other what courses they're supposed to take." Whatttt???? Completely absurd. My parents sold their house and had an estate sale due to Hofstra's incompetence. How TF was I supposed to know which courses are required and which ones "don't count"? That's what an academic advisor is for. I will say -- this was 10 years ago and I really hope they've cleaned up their act since then but I doubt it. Because guess what. I went looking for this 6 figure piece of paper that took me 5 and a half years of my life to earn, because a prospective job wanted to see it, and found out that I can't have my transcript because they're holding it for ransom due to an overdue library book! These clowns can't be serious. Idk what their library selection is like now, but back when I was a student they were old, crusty dusty books from the 70s. They're withholding the transcript I paid for through the nose and worked extremely hard for, because I lost a book that I guarantee was worth about .05 cents. They're really clowning, this scamiversity needs to be shut down by the BBB. read more

Cannot comment on education or campus, as I have no frame of reference for that....but I have been on campus for many events. Shuart stadium hosts awesome lacrosse events. My son's high school team was there for 1st round playoff this year. The Lizards game are always a spectacle and the Hofstra Division 1 team are consistently good competitors. This week I had the pleasure of attending the Class A Nassau County Softball Championship Series (shout out to our own WT Clarke HS - 2015 Nassau Champs). The stadium was easily accessible, intimate and well groomed. The place was rocking during the deciding game and the vibe was amazing. Now if they would only bring back Division 1 footbal, local sports would be complete. read more

It's difficult to summarize 4 years of school into one review. There were of course some ups and downs along the ride but overall, I would say I had a good experience at Hofstra. I was a commuter so I can't speak of the dorming life. But I do have to question why some would chose to dorm here, considering the costs, dangerous neighborhood, and just lack of a college town overall. It is a huge and pretty campus though, and is close to NYC. As a commuter I will say the parking was not the best. They did however open up a new space (of course during my last semester lol) and that helped tremendously. The main and biggest parking lot is right near the Zarb's School of Business main building (CV Starr) was was VERY convenient! The advisers are ZERO help. You basically have to rely on DegreeWorks to figure out what you need to graduate. Before I was even aware of this software, I mistakenly had taken some classes I didn't need to because my adviser failed to tell me I already had college credits from high school that fulfilled certain requirements. So do your own research! Hofstra offers a variety of majors, minors, clubs, and study abroad programs. Like any university, there are good and bad professors. I personally didn't have a negative experience with any. Some of my classes were very big (about 80 students). I didn't mind but I know a lot of people don't like this lecture style of teaching. I must say that Hofstra has great scheduling for classes. Throughout my four years, I never had one Friday class. One semester I was able to fit all my classes from about 1-6pm on Monday and Wednesday in addition to one online class. For the most part, I was always able to group my classes together so I didn't have any breaks. Then again I was always very fast at creating my schedule so I would suggest doing the same or else you won't have your ideal times. I did dislike how 'club hour' was from 11am-1pm on Monday's and Wednesday, since this prevented classes from being held at that time. read more

My problems with Hofstra started on day one and never ended in the 1.5 semesters I was there. I'm sorry I ever applied. I tell everyone I can to stay far away from this poor excuse for an academic institution. Heed my warning and save yourself the headache and frustration. Hofstra and Zarb have a knack for providing false information or promises. Don't take anything they say during the open house at face value. I was told I'd be able to do an independent study during my interview, and when the time came, they refused and didn't give any reason. They also advertised 10 elective classes on the website, but last semester they only offered one. Most of my professors were incapable of conveying the material in a meaningful or digestible way, and some never made eye contact with the class throughout the whole semester. Six of the ten classes in my program were a complete waste of time. If you have any complaints or want to vouch for your right to a decent education, the dean and department chairs will either ignore you or talk down to you until they think you will give up. I had an associate dean laugh in my face when I told him I wanted a better education. Use that information as you will. Finally, incompetence must be a job requirement for all Hofstra employees. Most faculty and administration either talk down to you, tell you they'll do something or follow up with you and don't, or ignore your emails and phone calls completely. I've seen this behavior from Zarb, financial aid, housing, registrar, and HR. You would think that at least financial aid would be more careful since they're dealing with people's money. Nope. I had to watch them like a hawk and correct their same mistakes over and over again. The area is also very unsafe. The first week of my first semester there were TWO reported gun-point break-ins and robberies on campus. Just visit Hempstead and you'll see what I'm talking about. read more

HOFSTRA University offers a summer camp, but I'm very surprised as to why it's popular. They pride themselves on their communication skills, yet don't call or email parents back. They don't provide a list of counsellors, teachers or nurses to reach out to. But they have no issue with requesting tips and in what form. But ifYa camper loses something then too bad is their policy. These are children you're supposed to be guiding and teaching. They're not bound to remember where they left sometnimf. Are you all not getting enough tips that you're resorting to rounding up the camper's items and selling them on eBay? read more

This school ruined my GPA. Their science department does not know how to teach and will screw you with any chance they get. If you're a minority then forget about fitting in, everyone has their own little group so if you're not white then forget it. There was also a professor, Marc Prinz who lashed out on me for asking a question and basically made me feel dumb for asking it. This school is only good for the business students who get to party every night because of their easy major. read more

Awesome university and visit. The staff and students were friendly and helpful. As touring the campus, people spoke and talked and made us feel like a part of the campus. The admissions staff care about the well being of the students rather than number crunching. This is a midsize school where students and professors are able to bond. Its located 30 mins away from NYC in Long Island. Jones Beach is nearby is you like going to the beach. There's 20 eateries on campus. The dining hall is open 24/7. There's something for everyone to eat from pizza to burgers to sushi. There's also several options for vegans and vegetarians. I haven't seen that a lot in touring campuses. Each student is required to do an intern which will benefit the student in the long term. 98% have jobs or go to graduate school after graduation. There's a high retention rate of students that come to Hofstra. read more

Went to Hofstra as an undergrad (2007-2011). I was a marketing major, fine arts minor in honors college. I chose Hofstra over NYU Gallatin school because of the substantial scholarship I received and because it was closer to family who were having health issues at the time. I lived on campus for two years and commuted the final two. The Honors College is incredible. The staff offers so much support, there's a great community of students that make it feel like a smaller school within a bigger school and there are a lot of honors-only perks. But be wary if you're not strong in liberal arts. Math & Science people found the required courses challenging and many ended up dropping the Honors College distinction. The Zarb business school is also top-notch. Will there be some professors that aren't great? Yes, but you'll have that at ANY school. The proximity to NYC was fantastic for internships. You will get what you put into it. I scheduled a few semesters where I only had class 2 days a week and commuted 30 minutes into the city for internships the other 3. It really helped give me a jump start career-wise. However, you are not actually IN NYC so you have a real campus experience. I made great friends, always had something to do with the amount of clubs and activities. The campus is an arboretum which makes it very walkable and beautiful. And there are plenty of options to drive or take buses to shops, restaurants, the mall, NYC, etc. We would often take the free campus bus to the train station and go into the city for Broadway shows ($20 student rush tickets!), late-night poetry readings in the LES, showings of the Rocky Horror Picture Show, museums, etc. on weekends. The art school was fine for my needs and the facilities were great but probably not as well-equipped or well-networked as other options if you want to be an artist, graphic designer, etc. There are better, affordable schools for this particular major in NYC (FIT, SVA, etc.). I do know a lot of people who graduated with Fine Arts degrees who are doing more than fine but they aren't working as artists. Most are working in marketing for creative companies. In my 7 years since graduating, I have never regretted going here. I didn't have a ton of debt graduating. I got my first job through one of my marketing professors' connections. And now I work at Viacom with a great salary and amazing benefits. Having an Ivy League or other prestigious degree with a large amount of debt would not have gotten me in any better position than the one I'm in now. If you're staying in NYC, the school is well known and there's a huge alumni network. The work they've done to get the presidential debates over the last few years has done wonders for the school's reputation. You can get a lot out of just being close to NYC, networking and working hard. read more

Over 80% of MBA students are foreign students ( most Chinese) and some of them don't seem to understand but still pass. If you have money and easy MBA, this is place to go. Hofstra USA: the place Hofstra students flock to after a late night of partying or studying (or just a reason to deflate boredom) to indulge in comfort fried food that will leave you with a slight regret as to why you needed to eat a barrel of nachos at 1 a.m. on a Wednesday night. Your experience at Hofstra USA will vary depending on what you order. Want a quick wait? Ordering chicken tenders or a brownie sundae will result in one of those grimy buzzing devices to go off before all your friends' who ordered the bacon mac n' cheese. So make it certain to rub it in their faces that you are the superior of the table because Omar loves you more. Ordering the breakfast burrito is like a game of Russian Roulette. Renowned as one of the hottest items at this establishment, I have encountered multiple occcasions where a peer was severely dissatisfied with the dryness of the burrito. Tortilla lovers beware. Huge fan of the milkshakes. Never met a milkshake I disliked. Solid/logical order. Oh, back to the nachos. If you do order this, make sure to have TWO HANDS holding the container, or else all the sides (which are jammed to one side) will fall out as you walk back to your seat in front of everyone. Been there. Done that. We move on. Order a buffalo tender wrap? Well, brace yourself. Although worth the wait, prepare to sit around for 15-20 minutes. The staff puts all their hard work and energy into this food item. (Tip: play a round of pool or go into the arcade and race some cars while waiting. It's FREE!..but you might look like a hardo) For some reason, this place of business shuts down at times when most desperately needed by Hofstra's student body (i.e. finals week). Tragic. Looking back, however, many memories will be made here. So sit back, relax and pump up that calorie consumption before you must return to your schoolwork. read more

I graduated from Hofstra with a BA in film, and all I can say is, what a total waste of money. First off, I admit going to school for film wasn't such a great idea, so I take responsibility for that but the professors in the film dept. have like 0 real film experience. One professor worked on a few wretched Troma films, another only had one of his screenplays made into a film (you prob never heard of it) and another only made 1 small independent film. The professors were very nice folks, but I don't think their experience justifies the high tuition. But my biggest gripe was how poorly I was advised when I first entered the school as a transfer student. Originally, I was advised to take the BS program, which I did for a year, only to later realize from another adviser that it was terrible advisement and that I should change to a BA if I want to graduate on time (since I was originally a transfer student). Ultimately, this resulted in me having had taken several courses that I didn't need and a whole lot of wasted time and money. This poor advisement resulted in something like an additional $10,000 added to student debt. If I was as wise then as I am now, I would've fought this. Hofstra has some very great programs in other fields, but their advisement and film programs were terrible. Be careful. read more

I think I made a great decision in choosing Hofstra for my undergrad career! While I was initially a little worried it would be hard to fit in as a commuter and be surrounded by Long Islanders, where I had grown up all my life, I was pleasantly surprised when I found that Hofstra was much different than I had expected. Not only was it really easy to integrate with the student body, but I also felt that everyone I met was of a different background; I felt I met less New Yorkers than I did out of staters! Over the years, I've met international, local, and out of state students and I'm so glad I can see how other people view a variety of topics! As far as education, I really am so amazed by how great the science programs are here. One really cool thing about getting a BS here is that you have to do research with a faculty member, which is something medical schools and future employers in the field definitely want you to have. Hofstra is great with its small class sizes and approachable professors. Definitely easy to go to a professors office hours and get questions answered! They're very involved! Overall, student life here is pretty great. Almost 75% of students live on campus (excluding off campus housing students).. So most students are always on campus, which is nice. It's big enough that you see familiar faces, but there's always someone new as well! Like I said earlier, I'm thankful that I chose Hofstra! Go pride! read more

My family has been involved with hofstra for years. I practically grew up there with my cousins sweet 16 parties, all the company bbqs and I also worked at the summer camp two years in a row. This college is very pricy. However, they have a great summer camp program for the children. They have so many programs and even have a special program for children for special needs called reach. They are located in an area that is so so. Much keep your eyes open. However, overall this is a good institution. read more

Their program offers only evening classes that start at 4, 6:30 or 8:30 pm which is great. They also offer Saturday classes as well. I think this may be the school for me. read more

An updated review. I'm writing a new one because in the week I asked for a transcript to be sent over, it still has not been received, and it's due at the end of the month. As the age-old joke goes: I'm paying $50K a semester and you can't accept a credit card payment?! You have to pay by cash or check, and there's no confirmation that your payment or transcript was even received. The registrar's office has a fax, not a phone number. I'll say this: I transferred from the local state college by my childhood home to Hofstra. The former was MUCH better in terms of academics and administration and didn't even cost $10K a semester. Hofstra doesn't have much of an academic reputation. It's not widely known around the country, so it's not the type of school that would give you a leg up when it comes to job applications. If you're here for a liberal arts degree, I would come here if and only if 50% or more of your tuition is from a scholarship. I've had some great professors, but I've also had classes that were insultingly easy. That said, getting straight A's is harder than it looks. It's not because the coursework is challenging; it's because I've had professors give letter grades on papers with no feedback. Some students actually had to correct the professors for the answers they marked wrong on their own tests. I majored in film, knowing full-well that it would not result in immediate employment (Although I found office work the year after I graduated and was able to move out). I don't blame Hofstra for my current career situation, but I have to say that most of the film department isn't qualified in terms of experience to teach. They say they "work on small projects," but quite frankly, it's because they haven't gotten work on major ones. The biggest emphasis is on networking. If you think networking is the key to a career in the film industry, you probably shouldn't be teaching. Yes, the social aspect is very important, but you don't even need a college degree to network and get crew positions. The social scene leaves a lot to be desired, to say the least. Sure, the campus is beautiful, but the surrounding neighborhood is anything but. The nearby bars are abysmal. The commuter bus insists on going to the Hempstead train station rather than Mineola (even though they're pretty much equidistant from the campus), and the Hempstead train runs less frequently, is more unsafe at night and takes 20 minutes longer to get to Penn Station. Also, if you don't have a car, you should forge a friendship with somebody who does. Getting stuck on campus on a Friday night? Yikes. College is what you make of it, and I wasn't anticipating the All-American college experience. I know I have trouble meeting new people, so it's not Hofstra's fault my social life was what it was. What I wanted was to study, to learn more and to grow. I feel very disappointed in that regard, and that's largely why I don't look back fondly on Hofstra as a whole. read more

I am a Hofstra grad and used to be a proud alum but since 2001 (prior to 9/11), I have not been. In 2000, I was selected as one of the HARTs of the Year - (Hofstra Alumni Recruitment Team, which BTW no longer exists). As I called to register for the training session for school year 2001, I was informed that I was no longer part of the team. Ostensibly, this was due to some comments I made about some unprofessional behavior by a certain staff (not faculty) member. To say that I was embarassed by this dismissal would be an understatement and I was also told by a couple of smug and self-serving admissions officers (neither of whom were Hofstra alums) that I was not allowed on campus. This was preposterous and I told them so. So, I was no longer part of them TEAM and started looking at Hofstra in an all new light. I came to realize that Hofstra was really big on self-promotion, but was really short on substance. As I began to talk with current students, I heard a constant litany of negativity, the result, I assumed, of their perceptions of how they were treated by staff and faculty, the expense of attending, the vacuity and shallowness of many of the native Long Islanders who attend and all of the extraneous commentary one hears from people who are dis-satisfied with their surroundings. I then thought back on my own experiences and had to conclude that had it not been for a 2 year Army ROTC scholarship that allowed me to attend Hofstra (and by virtue of it being awarded by the Military Science department AT HOFSTRA that I was all but compelled to attend), that I would not have chosen to attend Hofstra. However, I came from a family of modest means and my parents contributed nothing to my college costs, so with 2 year scholarship in hand, I attended Hofstra. Did I get a decent education? I suppose so. I rec'd my BA in Political Science and History and minored in English so I am your classic liberal arts grad. With all the reading and writing I did as an undergrad, I consider myself a decent communicator. Do I have a lot of friends from those days? No and perhaps that was because I was a commuter and now no longer live on LI. I've met some younger Hofstra alumni in the business world as I still live in the NY metro area and I have to say that many of them are just as shallow and vacuous as those described in so many student reviews found elsewhere on the web. Some have proved to be downright nasty and are classic backstabbers. If this is the type of graduate Hofstra produces and you are not that type of person, I recommend you look elsewhere. If you are looking for a classic undergraduate experience, Hofstra's surroundings in Hempstead, NY, an area known for high crime, I recommend you look elsewhere. If you are looking for fellow students who show an interest in getting an education more than getting drunk, smoking dope, trying to get la*d, etc., look elsewhere. Hofstra is where I received my B.A. degree and while I don't have kids, had I had college aged children, I would NOT recommend my alma mater to them. If that isn't enough to dissuade you from applying, then perhaps Hofstra will be right for you. Should that be the case and if you have to finance your education yourself, you really need to look farther afield; there are far better centers of higher education where the same or less money will buy you a better education, a better institutional reputation and perhaps even a better caliber student body with which to spend your college years. I graduated in 2004 with 2 bachelor's degrees: one in Humanities and the other in Social Science. What brought me to the school was a full scholarship, and that's definitely what kept me there, as I would never ever have paid 25K to attend such a sub-par institution. Except for the honors college, the students have never read a book more challenging than Charlotte's Web, lack intellectual curiosity, are superficial and privileged. Mostly frat boys/ sorority sisters. The professors are good, but they have to "dumb down" their courses constantly. Campus-wise, no complaints: Hofstra is beautiful: an arboretum, well maintained grounds, lots of places to eat (overpriced, of course). The dorms are pretty standard. Many great facilities for sports and recreation. The library is extensive. The bottom line: If you have the money and the brains and enthusiasm go for much better private schools. If you don't have the money, but have the brains and enthusiasm, go for CUNY schools. If you don't have either, please save yourself a shitload of money and get into something else. read more

The best 4 years of my life were spent here. There is an amazing student body that offers a lot of support and ways to get involved. Parking is usually a nightmare during AM hours, the best parking is on the dorm side of campus. The Breslin parking lot is routinely checked by public safety, so if you don't have a sticker avoid it. WRHU and SGA are great to be involved with!! read more

This school in my opinion is overpriced for what it is. In my first semester as a transfer student I have to say I believe I made a mistake in my commitment of attending here. I have only been part of this school for a total of 6 weeks and maybe it's my classes this semester or possibly it's the fact that my professors are below average in regards to other professors that teach here. I don't really know but, I feel that the school I had previously attended was way above this schools quality. The worst part is my previous school was only a two year school but, I can tell you over the past two years while attending Nassau Community I had teachers that actually taught and drilled information into your head so you understood it. With Hofstra you just don't receive that. My professors don't actually teach. They expect you to read the textbook and understand it. When it comes to class I find that my professors rant about current items or skip around so much that it confuses you. All of your class assignments are on blackboard and if you do not check it constantly you are screwed. Some teachers assign tons of homework and expect you to do it without actually covering it in class prior. Then review it after you do it in hopes that you taught yourself well enough! Even my math class is a joke as its all done on a Computerized program called MyMathLab. That is an absolute joke as you really need to teach yourself via homework or their lesson plan. Quite honestly, if I wanted my classes to be computer baste and wanted to teach myself I'd take online classes from university of Phoenix. Hofstra demands a high tuition but, it's not worth it. Overall the school is a disappointment and to be honest I think Nassau has a nicer campus then they do. I don't see how they are so highly rated and in my opinion the schools ratings is deeply skewed. Maybe one day this school can be a top university but as of now it's far from it. My advice look into other schools in Long Island before settling on Hofstra don't make the mistake I did and take a loan out for a school that is subpar at best!!!! read more

I just thought to myself, I wonder if Hofstra's been Yelped about, and alas! They have! Only I don't like their lack of stars so I am going to add my two (or twenty) cents. I graduated in 2008 with a degree in Creative Writing & Literature from the College of Liberal Arts/Honors College and I can honestly say I loved my four years there. I'd never even heard of Hofstra, having come from outside Boston and knowing nothing about Long Island, but I got a free application, Googled it, realized it was close enough to NYC to add to my list, and applied. I wasn't even excited when I got in, but as soon as I saw the campus and I fell in love. It could have been the beauty (national aboretum!) of the South Side or the friendly looking faces (residents only, commuters stink) or the fun unispan connecting the North and South sides or the great Creative Writing program that enticed me so. But, I will be honest, I'm pretty sure I fell in love with the Student Center. Call me a loser or lame or whatever, but I loved the Student Center. I thought it looked fun and collegey and everything I'd imagined. There were even people selling cute jewerly right there in the middle of the Student Center! How could I say no?! So I went and I never looked back. My education there was great. I had some fantastic writing professors who were both published and taught at other schools, such as NYU's grad program, etc. I loved most of my classes and even when I took pottery or drawing, thinking they'd be easy, I was surprised and impressed by how challenged I was and glad that Hofstra offered something more than just your standard courses. A lot of the other comments made reference to dumb people, which I have to disagree. Granted, not everyone at the school is a math whiz or reads literature before bed, but I do think Hofstra is selective in that each person has something different to contribute -- whether it's to the arts, the sciences, theater, a language or finance. I do think that everyone has their niche and I am glad I did not go to a school full of preps who all major in finance just so they can make 100k by the time they're 27. As for the price, I did have a half scholarship, but I'd compare it to most other private schools. College is expensive. You know the price before you go. If you don't wanna pay for it, go to a state school in your own state (I realize those prices are going up, too, but you get the point). I had a wonderful four years at Hofstra (all four years in their crappily awesome dorms!) and I honestly would still choose Hofstra again knowing all that I know. I have so much to write regarding Hofstra...in specific their Drama Department. I feel as if I should be returned my tuition and get compensated for damages and depression during the course of my life in Hofstra. In short I will say this, If Hofstra is where you plan on going to pursue your dream for acting...forget about it. You will find yourself in a war between BFAs Vs BAs! In the 4 years I took the program I came out wondering why the hell did I want to become an actress. This University stripped me of my passion, of my dream. I have never ever felt so hated and discouraged by a group of people as I did when I was around the Drama Dept faculty. I have never met a staff of people who can be so degrading to their fellow students. I felt like I was being personally attacked, as if the entire department disliked me. Yet they wanted to keep me along the ride because my tuition payed for their fucking shows and what not! The greatest disappointment of my time was a class that you had to take for 6 semesters called drama 55 or 55 hours! Drama 55 is equivalent to modern day "SLAVE LABOR" . You basically are assigned to build sets, costume, props, etc to help the department "put on a show"!! So basically I pay you thousands of dollars in return you make me into your bitch and I have no say whatsoever! My point exactly. I came to a university to learn the craft of art instead I end up doing manual labor..does this picture not seem wrong anywhere?? Lets talk about acting shall we. So if you are an acting major but not a "BFA" you are allowed only 4 acting classes for your entire curriculum (at least in my time)! JEEZ LOUISE that's like majoring in Accounting and being allowed to only take Accounting 101 and 102! Who the fuck will hire you?? ( I will stop this review right here, but I will edit this and add more details of my nightmare with the drama department.) read more

My experience visiting Hofstra was not good. After applying, I went to visit, to see what the campus, staff and classes were like, it was a bad experience. I took the LIRR Railroad there, it was horrible then the cab overcharged me, not to mention there was like 5 other people in a small car with me, and the campus was not too far. I was never told by neither the school or the taxi service or the people from the neighborhood. The neighborhood that the school is located in is bad. The staff basically told me to go back home in a nice way. Even though I came from far just to consider them and give them a try. Afterward, here comes the good part, a staff member called a cab for me that never came. The schools entrance is right of the highway and no cab stopped. No taxi number was working and the ones that did put me on hold until the line disconnected. I even Googled cabs to get home. I missed my undergrad class that night and I had an exam. I waited about 4 hours before I finally got a cab. The experience was so horrible. I eventually sent an email to a recruiter and told me to take me off their list and that they can keep my money, they accepted me, but I will never consider them, not even in my wildest dreams, I'm glad I visited! I'm currently enrolled at Hofstra and I love it. I've had a lot of great opportunities thus far and I've grown a lot as an individual. My major is public relations and the school of communications offers everything I could ever need. One professor worked for both the United Nations and the Obama administration, while my other professor is the founder of the Public Relations Professionals of Long Island. My best friend is also a comm major and she just got a job with CBS in Manhattan (and she hasn't even graduated yet.) There's dozens of organizations to become apart of and all have benefited me in different ways. There are always opportunities knocking on students' doors, but with anything, success requires work and dedication. There are a lot of negative reviews on this site, but a college education is what you make of it. In my short time here, I've attended a variety of networking conferences, interned, joined two different public relations organizations, and landed a wonderful writing position on campus. None of this would have been possible without the guidance of my professors, mentors and fellow peers. I applied to 7 schools, including Syracuse, Ithaca, Emerson, and Penn State. Out of all of my options, I chose Hofstra and I am firm in my support for this school. Though I've had a few grumbles about food prices and tuition costs, I know my education at Hofstra is worthwhile and will contribute greatly to my future success. read more
