August they let us run out of oil. took 12 hours to come and deliver an emergency supply. now in October, placed a call 11 AM for no heat or hot water on MONDAY. Today- is Tuesday still have not seen a technician. Rep on phone always says, you're next. As far as I can see their technicians are great ( the 2 that they have) need to quit and work for a company that doesn't lie to their customers and has the ability to fulfill an emergency service within 3 hours. Heating system stopped working, been a customer with Hoffman energy for over 10 years. Hoffman responded and got me up and running the same day, regarding service, no service complaints whatsoever. My complaint is exorbitant billing for an aquastat. I was charged $650.00 for a $150 aquastat! I can understand a markup for the replacement aquastat, but FOUR times the price is ridiculous. I contacted the service manager to discuss the billing but was not satisfied by my exchange although the manager. read more

Signed up for an auto delivery contract with Hoffman. In hindsight, I locked in a price that turned out to be the highest price for the next year, but that was on me. But although I have two tanks, and it takes months to empty them at my usage, I received two substantial bills within a month. I very much doubt I used hundreds of gallons in a few weeks, but there's no way to make sure what they actually deliver unless you're there when they come and they don't notify you in advance. They send the bill and you have to take their word for it. When my neighbor mentioned that a former employee of another oil company told her some companies will send bills for more than they actually delivered and pocket the difference, I realized what had probably happened, although I can't prove it. Now I just keep an eye on my gauge and order oil when I'm running low, and get furnace maintenance once a year separately. (Note: In response to this review, Hoffman expressed concern and asked that I provide my contact information so a representative could discuss my experience. They would make us wait 3-4 months for services and when they came out to service our appliances they would either break something or not check something properly. Overcharged for oil and they lied amount the amount of oil filled. Truly a terribly run business. Unreliable. They do not care about their customers. I would never recommend. They sent me to collections for an early termination fee and then admitted how poorly they acted and offered to split it! Outrageous. These guys are like ninjas. You have no idea when they are coming. We had a major snow storm wasn't able to clean the area they walk through to fill propane so they decided not to fill it. I'm suppose to be on automatic refill , Well I noticed the tank gauge was registering low so I called the company and low and behold they sent a truck 2 day's later . So disappointed with the way the company decides what they should charge a person for oil . What they charged me for oil the last 2 times they delivered was criminal! I was on a budget and automatic delivery, in October my tank was down less then a 1/4 I had to request a delivery. I called the office when i saw how much they charged me a gallon and was told " My account had a note saying that's how much I should be charged! She couldn't explain why. Shouldn't I have been charged what the oil prices were for that day/week? I know exactly why, my contract was ending and it was the last delivery , I had a big credit, they made sure to charge me enough per gallon so they wouldn't owe me money in the end. They had nerve to deliver oil to me yesterday after my contract ended and charged me 3.1490 a gallon! Connecticut average for this week was 2.277. The oil delivery business is competitive, so do yourself a favor and avoid this outfit. My furnace needed repair and the technician who came to my house, scolded me for having a dirty furnace and asked me if I was trying to harm my family (sarcastically). When I asked him what he was going to do to fix things, he told me to get out of the basement and let him work. Rude, jerk and I wouldn't hire Hoffman for ANYTHING. Switched to Hoffman from Robison because the latter's pricing was very high. I have an older 2 family home and they immediately seized on this as an opportunity for major repair. First told I had a faulty vent alarm. Changed it out for $200. Next delivery, same problem. Another tech comes out, says it's an old tank, probably sludge at the bottom clogging the vent. What!? How is that even possible. They pushed very hard for installation of a new tank, which also requires very expensive tank removal. Finally had their one honest tech come out, make sure the vent stack was clear and informed Hoffman it was OK. That seemed to be the end of it. In the other two family unit, I had a similar issue. The tank had rusty legs, because there is occasional ground water in that part of the basement. They insisted that in order to keep delivering, legs would need to be replaced, and if you need to replace the legs you should really just change the whole tank. Then a pinhole leak developed in the line from the tank to the burner. Due to groundwater the issue looked worse than it was. They refused to repair until I cleaned it up and said I must report a spill and get very expensive remediation. Long story short, they called New York State DEP, causing me to hire remediation specialists, even though that is the responsibility of the homeowner. Clean up cost $4500. T When I spoke to the tech in charge of cleanup he said, there wasn't much oil, it was mostly water, and that there was no groundwater contamination, confirming what I already knew. In NYS if the spill is less than 5 gallons and contained, it doesn't need to be reported. Furthermore, in his professional opinion, the tank is secure and the legs are sturdy. After cleanup I called them to fix the line. At the time they repaired the line (it was summer) but said that to continue delivery they would have to replace the legs or the whole tank. The line was repaired but that was the last time I dealt with Hoffman. I switched to another oil company and have had no issues since. read more

we have been customers of Hoffman Fuel for decades. They installed our second oil burner a few years ago, do our yearly service, and deliver our fuel. When the old burner used to break down, they were there - in the middle of the night if necessary - and barely grumbled about our user non-friendly crawl space. I never worry about running out of fuel because they monitor it and deliver as needed. They convened at our home to discuss the best way to install our new oil burner - definitely a custom fit - and it's been perfect! we're very pleased with our working arrangement with Hoffman. AWFUL!!! I wanted to give them my buisness for a service contract, but they won't return my phone call. When you call, you go into a voicemail loop, and there is no way to get a human. We have left about 6 messages over the last four weeks, and no one has called as back. No more. I would not use them. My parents loyal customers for 3+ years are locked in a contract with a "ceiling" price in which they will never pay for oil above that price, but if there are lower prices they will pay that instead. Hoffman fuel actually just charged them 4.57$ a gallon- when current companies are charging under 4.00 a gallon. And the best part yet Hoffman fuel is currently locking in new customers at 3.56$ a gallon. Talk about price gauging your loyal customers. Over 1.00! I was told that "thats for new customers only" and my response was "how nice, string in new customers than after a year price gauge the fuck out of them for being loyal to you"! Assholes!! We didn't extend the contact, and as a result received and oil delivery price of over $1 per gallon more than the local oil company. Hoffman Fuel has terrible customer service. Their original sales representative lured me into Hoffman by telling me I didn't have to be an automatic delivery customer. I called to ask why I didn't have a contract emailed to me since it had been 30 days since I had spoken to her, and she said that it was weird I didn't get an email. When I finally got the e-mail, it was clear I was going to be an automatic deliver customer. When I called to question what happened and how specific I was about not being an automatic delivery customer, I was told the salesperson was new and didn't know "all the plans". I was clearly deceived on purpose and it has been an exhausting two months. I will make sure I tell everyone I know about their sneaky policies. Shame on Hoffman for attempting to take advantage of hard-working people who pay a lot of money for fuel to begin with. read more

Given the previous reviews for this company I was initially extremely apprehensive about our signing up as a customer. I expressed as much to the sales agent that handled my service agreement sale. Ultimately, she convinced me that it was a very good company and would have no issues. Before becoming a customer they had responded to an emergency heating issue at our family home. They responded within 1 1/2 hours and promptly got our furnace up and running. When a billing misunderstanding stemming from the service call arose they solved it extremely promptly to my great satisfaction. They also gave us a $100 credit on our first year service plan. THE WORST COMPANY. DO NOT USE HOFFMAN UNLESS YOU WANT TO BE RIPPED OFF. NEVER BE SO DISAPPOINTED WITH A COMPANY. I used Hoffman Energy to Install propane gas to for use in my kitchen. It wasn't working properly after install, the gas was sputtering out of the stove. I called Hoffman back to fix the job that was fully paid for and they CHARGED me for a service call. I CALLED 4 times in reference to this bill asking them to get back. They never RESPONDED, BUT KEPT SENDING ME BILLS. I was having company over and tried to cook dinner and my stove did not work. Called Hoffman and a NASTY girl name Holly Pierson said we disconnected your tank for non payment. I told her your company NEVER RESOLVED my issue with the service call, that I should not PAY FOR. Hoffman never notified me that they were disconnecting the tank. Hoffman sent a letter. Which I received,1 day after the disconetion, and the Letter makes no mention to the fact that they are disconnecting the tank. It does say that they attempted to contact me. WHICH IS A FALSE STATEMENT. They NEVER contacted me. TO MAKE IT WORST, They just delivered propane and charged me over $5 a gallon when I am paying $1.79 a gallon at another house for propane. 2 and half times more!! First my parents and then we have used Hoffman for around 70 years. We were always satisfied with them. They were a family owned business and cared about honesty and customer satisfaction. But last year, although I had a budget plan with years of usage history, and all new windows, on which to base the monthly payment, in March I was told I had to increase that payment by $200 a month until June to make up the projected shortfall! But this year, unbelievably, it was now $870 a month!!! I checked and saw that their per gallon price is the highest charged in Fairfield County. And someone told us that the family had sold out to some big company and they had fired most of the technicians (who are good), so that there are only three men who cover their whole area!! Please stay away from this company. The automatic oil delivery is a complete scam...they literally deliver oil every 2 weeks because they are greedy. I spoke with customer service (also scam artists) stating that I did not need delivery every 2 weeks but they continued to do it anyways. Great way to listen to your customers you greedy people. There is no good reason to deliver oil every 2 weeks. I had a service technican come out because my heat would not reach above 67 degrees even when I had it set to 72 degrees. He was extremely rude and told me that there is nothing wrong with my furnace becaue he couldn't diagnose the problem. Also, heard many stories about furnaces being incorrectly installed (refer to BBB). There are other affordable oil companies in the area with great customer service so there is no need to deal with Hoffman! read more

Based on my own customer experience, that of my elderly mother (a customer for more than 50 years) and my daughter's experience, I would urge anyone reading this review to have NOTHING TO DO WITH THIS COMPANY. Once upon a time Hoffman was a decently run, local company. But something (I suspect a corporate acquisition) changed dramatically. Over the past several years this company has proven to be a major disappointment on many fronts: dreadful and over-priced service, dishonorable dealings with customers, finding loopholes so they can wheedle out of their obligations to customers, rude and surly customer service representatives. Too bad, I discounted the current reviews and resigned with Hoffman--we've been customers for five years and took them with us when we moved--just got off the phone with the customer service rep--for my annual service--for my annual service, the first available date is January! I pointed out they always did the fall tune up in the fall and I always made my appointment in late September--she said not important, they were completely booked and if I had any problem, I had emergency service--However, no problem sending a technician today at $130 an hour to look at a broken damper and to readjustment my zone heating. Bottom line, Hoffman goes where the $$$ are. No profit in contracted service; who knows what they can add up on something that needs a repair. All the reviews I read were negative and I though,t just a few disgruntled customers, happens all the time,. Now that I'm adding my voice to the chorus, I wondering if we aren't the majority. Too much to write here. I placed a service call after my AC units had an annual service asking for them to come by as the house was not cooling down. That was at the end of May. In July I called again I was told that never made it out to my house and someone would be there first thing the next morning. Had my wife stay home at 4pm I called them and I was told that because my service call was made late in the day that I was last on the list to which I replied that the original service call was in may. They arrived at 630pm. The next day I ran out of oil even though I am on automatic delivery. The lat time they had delivered was over three months ago. I would not use then again on a bet. I was signing up with Hoffman and specifically told Dawn Perkins that I wanted to call when oil was delivered. She told me okay. My first order I placed and I promptly paid the bill. Over the holidays I received oil I did not order and was going to call but I was busy. I then received an email from her that unless I signed the service contract per "there protocols" that they would not be able to provide me with with oil or service. Low and behold I went and order oil from someplace else and believed that that was the end of my relationship with them. I filled my tank on Friday and paid for it. Much to my surprise I had a bill in my mailbox( which under Federal Law they are not allowed to use) for oil I did not order. I called to tell them and she arrogantly told me that because I provided my SS number I was on auto refill. That is a new excuse for bad behavior, you dumped me because I refused to sign your contract and then want to charge me an early termination fee of $300 plus and change. Good luck to the fools that sign up with Hoffman. I am also very happy that I had a witness to my conversation with Dawn when I signed up. I have had no heat in my home for 4 days service tech has been out here 3 times and last night at 830 I called for service in my freezing home when I returned from work it is now 8 a.m. And I call again they have no record of the service ticket from last night. When I asked to speak to a manager I'm told I will need to call back on Monday. I will be canceling my contract and finding services elsewhere this is ridiculous. We ran out of oil on Super Bowl Sunday because they did not monitor consumption. Many of the people who work there have bad attitudes and made me feel like they were always doing me a favor by servicing my needs. Sippin, my former fuel provider, was by far a better choice! We've used Hoffman for a very long time. Our favorite technician is Kenny G. who does a great and thorough job servicing our burners. They are competitive on oil prices and we set up our cleaning for during the off season when they are less busy. They've been quick to respond when needed in an emergency. We try to monitor our level of oil as we have been allowed to run low on a couple of occasions which can really mess up the oil burner. read more

I have used Hoffman for a few years now, on there budget plan . When I renewed the plan this past March they quoted me a price that I agreed on. When they started billing me the price was almost 80 dollars more a month. That should have all been calculated when the contract was up for renewal. That was also after a 4oo $ "catch up" charge. I am on auto delivery and I ran out of oil last New Years weekend and again this Friday. I was supposed to get a delivery last Monday but they never showed up.All mistakes on there part. Then they would also deliver when there was a half a tank, that must have been when the prices were at a high. There service department has been good ,but as for there general practices they suck .I'm definitely going to start looking elsewhere. when you have a 97 yr. old living with you can't be without heat and hot water. that's what auto delivery is all about. awful awful awful beware they promise a ceiling price on oil then every delivery is at the highest price , example ceiling of 2.75 per gallon price can be lower if oil price is lower.but funny thing always happens even if oil is 75 cents or more lower than ceiling price the higher price is charged. also deliveries are always made when oil price is at its highest. this past summer the average price was 1.75-1.99 per gallon but good old hoffman billed me 2.70 for oil in august. it seems as though they owed me a few hundred dollars from my budget plan. no problem top off the tank at high price and presto its gone. called customer service and was told that s the price. go ahead and check what the price was hoffman and call me if you think i am wrong. also a new customer can get a price thats about 1.00 per gallon lower . that a way to conduct yourselves. never again read more
