Hodgepodge kinda says all you need to know because there's a hodgepodge of all sorts of things in her, mostly household items. Not everyone grew up with that word so since there's not a lot to report after my visit here today, why not explore the word itself? Hodgepodge (n.) a motley assortment of things. Also a theory or argument made up of miscellaneous or incongruous ideas. Hodgepodge has come to mean any mixture of things that are not really meant to go together, but it originally referred to a soup of all sorts of ill-suited ingredients jumbled together in a pot. The origin of hodgepodge is ulimately French, however. The Middle English Hochepot derived from the same word in French, and was formed from the verb hocher, meaning "to shake," and pot which meant the same thing in French as it does in English: a large, deep pan for cooking. (It's possible that I spent too much time watching Reading Rainbow or Sesame Street with the kids :-) Okay back to this biz, as for this locally owned and operated business, it's like several other thrift shops/consignment with an eclectic collection of furniture, housewares, etc. The prices are reduced, 5 times, over the course of two months so the longer the item is unsold the cheaper it gets. The store is clean, well organized and is attended by a couple folks at the checkout area. All sales are final, no returns or exchanges. Every time I come to Gulf Shores over the past 20 years I come in here ( and purchase) as long as they have been open. Today, ready to buy 2 rooms full of furniture for our beach house, my husband and I arrived at 9:45. The older lady would not lets us come in to look until 10. We waited / drove around went back at 9:54. Doors were lock and through window she held up 10 fingers. I own a business and could not imagine doing that to one of my customers! I will certainly not ever buy there again and will let everyone I know about the 10 o clock policy. We are now heading to buy thousands of dollars for our beach house on West Beach elsewhere today. read more
