We love to visit for holiday decor. They always have sales with good deals and lots of great items to decorate around the house during the holidays. It was very busy of course but they had a lot of lanes opened up check out the customers timely. I love shopping at Hobby Lobby, this location felt very gross. The bathroom was like a middle of nowhere gas station. They were stocking but there were carts and boxes EVERYWHERE! Today I wasn't even shopping, I was only here to meet up with my favorite cousin to have lunch in downtown Kirkwood. As time passes, this store is getting worse. Tried to return something & the return/exchanges line was very long... of customers buying things, not returning. So I went to a much shorter line where the cashier could refund my money. She claimed she didn't know how (don't they train them for that?). She had her boss tell me to go to the refund line, so as I passed, I remarked that that line was being abused. She ignored me as she did earlier when she easily could have resolved my issue. One of the other cashiers called me over to her since she knew me & in a couple minutes refunded my money. I recently came to this store looking for a specific item. Near the cashiers a woman was standing there with a badge saying "Customer Service Manager". I greeted and got no response, no smile, nothing! I proceeded to show her a picture of what I was looking for. Still no response. Then she turned and yelled across the store. "Name". When she got no response from the person she was calling she told me that if they had any it would be along a certain shelf. If you are looking to be crafty in any sense of the word, but you're on a budget...this is definitely the place to go. Speaking as a girl who has tried out every hobby from model cars (no joke I was an interesting kid), jewelry making, knitting, and scrap booking, I have needed to find a place where I will not drop every cent I have on my latest great endeavor. They carry all these products here, not to mention fabrics, cross stitch patterns, those weird black felt color in posters, beading, ad frames for any picture you would want to hang on your wall. Also, a pretty substantial silk flower collection if that is your thing. I have not found yarn or needles cheaper anywhere around this part of town, so I keep going back. Hobby Lobby is one of my go-to places for craft supplies, party decorations, or whatever oddly specific item I am looking for. They have such a large supply of "stuff"! It is a great catch-all if you can find the item somewhere else. The major plus to Hobby Lobby is that everything is super cheap. If you look online, they always have a 40% off coupon for any one item. And they are allwwwwayyys having sales, "If it is not on sale this week, it will be on sale next week." You can also get your receipt price adjusted up to two weeks after your purchase. That is significant here because you can count on your purchase going on sale. The service here is a little slow. Checking out can take longer than it should compared to other retail chains...that issue is pretty trivial. Get your craft on! read more

This place is freaking awesome. SO much stuff in one spot! Really amazed me with their selection. I've only been here a couple of times. It has this distinct smell which is like a mix of a craft shop and cracker barrel. A lot of the stuff they sell here somehow reminds me of cracker barrel. Also the place was founded by Mormons, I think (?) so sometimes you'll see some Christian-inspired crafting stuff which is neat, if you like that sort of thing. I could see people of all ages liking this store. From little kids looking for fun things to do at birthday parties (beading kits, etc.) to crafty teenagers looking for fun stuff to do as well (model kits of cars, planes, etc., girly stuff too like sewing and jewelry making) to college kids looking for art supplies for classes, to older folks who just enjoy making quilts, sculpting, crafting, scrap booking, you name it. I personally came in there looking for wicker baskets for my raffle at my charity event. The staff is helpful and friendly! Also by the checkout they sell candy in old-timey wrappers!! So cool! I should mention if you forgot to bring a coupon (which I did) but you have a phone which can access the intarwebzzz go to their website and click on the weekly coupon deal and BAM! I found where all the women in the area congregate at lunch time! Seriously, I've never, ever been in as busy and crowded a Hobby Lobby as this one. It didn't ruin my crafting experience or anything, but boy, was I surprised. Anyway... Oh God, I am such a Hobby Lobby whore. I could wander this place for HOURS, listening to their whack muzak and dreaming up all sorts of hair-brained art & craft projects. When I visited, they were having a giant sale on Halloween, Thanksgiving & Holiday decor--BEFORE the holidays. Who does that? Maybe that's why the place was full of people. I was slightly disappointed to hear that I missed the half-off sequin sale by a week, but that didn't stop me from going overboard on the shiny things... which was probably silly because Hobby Lobby has awesome sales ALL THE TIME! If you miss one, just head back a few weeks later and your stuff will likely be 30-50% off. I'm just impatient when it comes to craftiness and I needed those sequins immediately. I know. It's a sickness. Let's see, what else do I love about this place? Well, they have EVERYTHING. Want to make candles? They've got you covered. Interested in homemade soaps? You're good. Like model cars, faux flower arrangements, sewing projects, stained glass, mosaics, scrap-booking, beading, doll houses, painting or just about any other creative endeavor you can think of? Went to HL to get new glass put in an old picture frame that fell and broke. I wasn't sure what it would cost or how much of a hassle it would be but the folks there made it short and sweet. I went here the other day to see if I could pick up some supplies for my print making course. Mistakenly, I thought it might be like other craft stores I've been to. I found out that the Hobby Lobby is the biggest collection of imported, useless junk I've ever seen in my life. I LOVE this place. If i didn't live so far away, I'd come here all the time to wander. When my roommate moved in, we wanted to add some more color to the living room to match her horrifyingly bright and purple (with rhinestones) table. She wanted a quote board. I wanted a place to put random memories. We came here and found a large white board, a set of cork bulletin-board like things, paint, paint sponges, and really strong magnets. I LOVE magnets and they had strong silver little ones that i'm almost certain are made from some sort of rare earth metal. And they weren't super expensive either! I also found bumpy purple fuzzy cloth (i'm serious, fuzzy purple cloth that has bumps built in) and pink swirled fuzzy cloth (really really soft) and I made a blanket for my roommate as a welcome-to-living-with-me-in-my-crazy-world gift. She loves it to death and refuses to let her cats play with it willynilly. So thank you hobby lobby for all the awesome things you offer! Ok, I'll admit it...I like to return things...a lot. I am planning my daughter's wedding, so I"ve been experimenting with centerpieces, decorations, etc. But, Hobby Lobby has really put a damper on exploring my inner Martha Stewart. I recently bought a couple vases, well, as recent as about 64 days ago. When I decided to go in a different direction, I went back to buy another type of vase and return the ones I had previously bought. The sales girl was all too eager look at my receipt and say, "Sorry, it's been past 60 days! No returns!" No sugar-coating it, just shut me down like that. Now, I understand stores must have policies in place to keep the riff-raff out, but I've always been more apt to shop at places that are happy to greet me whether I'm purchasing or returning. Daaaaamn, homie! I needed some miscellaneous holiday items, and my grandma recommended Hobby Lobby as a cheap place to pick up a few things. Grandma knows what she's talking about! Hobby Lobby was a freaking GOLDMINE. The place is huge. If you come here, you need to have an idea of what you want; otherwise, it's pretty overwhelming. I slowly meandered the aisles, and one by one, found the items that I needed. The best part? Pretty much everything was on sale. All of their Christmas items are HALF OFF right now. You read that right! I bought a crapton of holiday decor for less than $20. You really can't beat that. One downside? The lines move reallllly slowwwww. read more

So where have I been? This was my first trip to a Hobby Lobby...EVER. I went with an artistic friend of mine who wanted to buy painting supplies. I was looking for Christmas decorations for my "table top" tree (aka the small tree-shaped rosemary bush I found at Lowe's). I wasn't sure that I'd be able to find much by way of small tree decorations, but holy crap! They had more than I could have imagined, and it was all half off! Add to that the 40% off coupon from their website and I made off with a with quite a bit crafting loot! I took a few minutes to peruse the rest of the store and I must say...if you're looking for anything crafty (painting, sewing, floral, mirrors, doll houses, WHATEVER) you're probably going to fine it here. On the other hand, if you're looking for serious and varied art supplies, I think you'd be better off at a real art supply store...but in the end, even though I'm not a crafter, I did find what I was looking for, and at a reasonable price, too. Hobby Lobby is a bad bad place for me only because I can never leave there without purchasing something!! HL was a big time saver and money saver for me for my wedding back in July. I was able to find so many items that I needed and at a great price that you couldn't tell it was DIY when I was completed. My recent trip there was to purchase a black wooden "LOVE" sign that I had my eye on to display with our wedding photos. To my surprise it was already 50% off so my coupon wasn't needed. It fit my vision perfectly! If you ever need anything for the holidays, or just are bored and want something to do, this is your place to go! read more

The lines in this place are ridiculously long, seriously bring up some more cashiers during busy hours. When I shop here I have a tendency to feel dirty for some reason, something instinctually tells me to go to a different art supply store, but that 40% off coupon works wonders for a starving artist in a pinch for a single item. Word of advice if you buy art supplies here avoid their Masters Touch brand of products at all cost. I learned the hard way, the brushes fall apart sometimes after one use but most will last for a couple of weeks which is not acceptable. The Masters Touch paint is garbage filler paint made in China with no color quality what so ever. Moral of the story use the coupon for a decent item skip the rest, other local art stores are priced better. read more

Pros: Close-by-us hobby and craft store. Large selection of craft, art, sewing, and home decor items Interesting and sometimes unique home decor and garden items. Although this chain promotes itself as Christian, there are some lovely pagan themed things to be found here. And no, I won't say what or they'll remove them. :) Cons: Crabby employees. Tip: If you see someone standing in the middle of the store looking lost or puzzled, it's fine to ask them if you can help them find something. Waiting to ask at the check-out counter is too late. No bar codes/check out scanning. Checking out is a nightmare if you go when it's busy. Each item has to be laboriously entered one digit at a time into the register. Since most people tend to have a bunch of small things (like individual flower stems, jewelry components, paints, ribbons, etc.) you can imagine how much fun this is to wait for. Tip: Go when the store first opens. Don't go at lunch time or right after work. Or on Saturday after 10am. Most of their stuff is made in China and is shoddy and cheap. Sometimes though you can score some quality stuff. For items like art supplies, look in person then go to Amazon where you can find them for far cheaper even if you do have one of HL's 40%-off coupons. read more

I go to the Lobby for glass and stained glass supplies because they are the cheapest in town. They have a semi-decent glass supply, although some of it is all broken or chipped. I give HL three stars only because of their corporate politics. Maybe that's fair, and maybe it's not, but I hate giving my $ to a corporation that is against a lot that I stand for. Sigh. For all things arts & crafts, they're well-stocked, including seasonal stuff out of season. On the plus side, they also have model rockets, home science experiments, and historical models. I was basically a regular at this store for a few months this fall when I was painting a lot as a hobby. I have also shopped here for serious art stuff for my sister's art classes. I have mixed feelings on this place. First and most importantly, if you pay full price at this store, you are an utter failure as a shopper. They have sales every week, and usually but not alway a weekly coupon that you can print off the internet for 40% off of one item (only one coupon per customer per day so bring a friend). If you want something that isn't on sale this week, wait a week. Second, if you do actually intend to buy something, bring some reading material or a cross-word puzzle to do while you're waiting in line. The cashiers have to type in the price for every item purchased, and these cashiers are mind-numbingly slow. As a former retail employee that could ring a person up in a matter of seconds with a smile on my face, I end up wanting to bash my head against the shelf with the candle warmers at the check-out. Seriously, candle warmers? Just light the candle or get an air freshener. Third, city folk be warned, this place is seriously county. I mean on a Saturday (FYI the store isn't open on Sunday), this place is swarming with all the county women that gotta get their hit of fake flowers and scrapbooking. It's housewife crack. I'm serious. The parking lot is nearly full on weekends. It can be a bit of a culture shock if you aren't mentally prepared for the kitschy insanity. This might be another good reason to bring a friend. Moving on to the substance of the store .... where to begin? This place will test you (Indian Jones and the Last Crusade style). If you can lower your head and make your way through the randomly themed nik naks, you'll next be tested by aisles with zebra-print lamp shades with neon pink feather trim and wicker and fake flowers as far as the eye can see. Finally, you'll have to make a leap of faith past the scrapbooking section. But if you make it all the way to the back of the store, there are real art supplies. Paints, canvasses, brushes--BOB ROSS brushes because making happy little trees with anything else is sacrilege--, some frames but not the best selection (I prefer Michael's for frames), thin tape for taping off paintings (which Michael's doesn't carry), and anything a novice painter needs. There are also supplies for the more serious artist or the Art minor in college. I've had to shop with my sister a few times to buy the things on her supply list for her classes, and overall, Hobby Lobby has had many of the things she has needed including mat board, special paper for water color or whatever else, fancy colored pencils, pencils for sketching, cutting mats, etc. (I can't remember all of the random, specific things she needed). And there is custom framing, but I usually refuse to do custom framing because it is insanely expensive. Cheap girl, tip number two of this review, buy a standard size frame and have the mat custom cut for whatever you're framing. In my case, I had to frame some seriously bizarre sized documents. I ended up getting the frames from Michael's because they oddly had the very rare sized frames that I needed, but Hobby Lobby's custom mat cutting was a better price so I got my mats cut here. I think I got 16 x 20 mat cut for $9, and the prices vary by size. The service at the custom framing counter is spotty. When I went with my mother with serious intent to find out about their custom framing and matting in order to decide if that's what we wanted to do, the lady at the counter could not be bothered by our questions. She was cleaning the glass on a frame but not helping a customer. She wouldn't look at my mother when she was talking to her. When my mom asked how much custom mats were, the lady said again without looking at my mother, "Normal paper ones or acid-free that we have to send out for?" It took everything humanly possible to restrain myself. I wanted to run my fingers down the middle of the glass she was cleaning. Why don't you tell us about both and actually attempt to do your job? Needless to say we left without making any purchases on that particular visit. Luckily this woman was not there when I returned at a later date to get custom mats cut. Anyway, the lady that cut my mats was very helpful and friendly. I had never had mats cut before and didn't really know what I wanted or what I was doing, but she helped me through the process making it fairly quick and painless. (I probably stood in line longer than it took to get the mats cut.) Overall, it's the Wal-Mart of crafts, and it really does have the largest selection around. Of course the more serious artist may want to go to ArtMart or Dick Blick, but Hobby Lobby will usually get the job done for the everyday hobbyist. And I'll keep going back with my 40% off coupon despite wanting to die while waiting in the check-out. read more

Okay. So, Im going to be petty here. A couple of weeks ago I was in this Hobby Lobby. I shop there more than weekly. Well, I did. Now I drive to Arnold. I asked a question of an employee and the I assume Asst manager ( Pony Tail, kind of short) overheard, butted in and got snarky with not only me but the employee. For absolutely NO reason. I had many items in my cart, left it and left the store. Went to the Arnold Hobby Lobby where they are always friendly. Stopped in at Kirkwood again a few days ago and the same employee/manager overheard a quiet conversation I was having with another customer. She came over, made another snarky comment and gave us an eye roll. We were not talking about her or the store we were helping each other with ideas. We both left that day. I brought two of an item to the check out because one had a discounted price on it and the other did not. The one with the discounted price on it was open, so I wanted the unopened one. I let the cashier know what I had done; she had to get the okay from the supervisor walking around. Which I get, but then they started asking me if I wanted the one that was open, I said "no" I didn't open it, I just brought it up so that you could see the right price. Then they had to count the cards in the open one to see if they were all there. And they kept going on about the price. Like I was trying to steal. At that point I had had enough! I am not a thief so don't treat me like one. I just said never mind, I don't want any of it. The situation was very embarrassing! People were looking and waiting in line. People treat people messed up because, society tells them it's okay to disrespect people who you feel are a lower class than you. Hobby Lobby needs to have better training for employees that deal with the public. They need to leave their bias at home. read more

I went into Hobby Lobby initially at the recommendation of my sister-in-law to get an oil painting we picked up in Rome framed. The framing staff was very helpful in picking out a custom frame, and 2 weeks later I returned to pick up our beautiful piece of art! It was at this time that Hobby Lobby became the savior to our "new big house and severe lack of Christmas decorations" problem that was occurring. It was an awesome shock to see that all the Christmas decorations were on sale BEFORE Christmas so we were able to pick up a bunch of stuff for a lot cheaper than we were expecting. I don't do a lot of crafting, but Hobby Lobby seems to be a great place to go when you want to do some decorating on the cheap. read more
