The first time someone told me to meet them at the bus mall, I panicked. Is that... a station? Is it a real place, or just a local nickname? Will I sound stupid if I ask these questions!? I'm going to tell you what I did, Yelpers. I caught a taxi. I caught a taxi to the bus mall, hoping the taxi driver would know what the bus mall was. "What end?" he asked, and I hesitantly replied, "the post office?" because this was the rest of the meeting instruction from the person I was meeting ("the bus mall, on the post office side").
Thank goodness it all made sense to him, because he was off in a jiffy and soon enough we pulled up on Macquarie Street. "So... is that the bus mall?" I meekly asked, gesturing over at Franklin Square (before I knew it was Franklin Square), where I could see a couple of bus stops. "Nope, it's right in front of you." "Oh... of course," I replied, looking ahead at an intersection. Just get out of the cab with what intelligence you have left, I told myself, and work it out from there. I thanked the cab driver and bailed.
GUYS. THE BUS MALL IS BASICALLY A MALL FOR BUSES! I KNOW! IT'S AMAZING! But seriously, it's a chunk of Elizabeth St (in between Macquarie St and Collins St) that is JUST FOR BUSES! And taxis, I think, or emergency vehicles or something. The section of the street is paved a bit like a mall, and there are a stack of bus stops on either side of the street, where Metro buses will take you all over Hobart. So good. The 42 bus that pulls up in front of the Post Office will even take you to MONA for only $4.80 return. What a sweet deal.
That's the end of my embarrassing story. read more
