A fun add-on to the MONA experience, the ferry also drops you in a very convenient spot in town. There are indeed sheep to sit on, and some other weird quirks that fit with the overall MONA aesthetic. If I had a car, I'd still drive there, but since I didn't, this was a fine way to close out the day. I would use this space to note that the bus from the airport was a bit of a nightmare and ran an hour late without informing us what was happening. Something to consider if you're wanting to do-as I did-a straight trip from the airport, a day at the museum, and a ferry trip into town for accommodation at the day's end.

A ferry taking you to a place as incredible as MONA is going to be in trouble if it isn't good, but these guys are killing it. Their heir little cafe/bar was very well stocked. Quiches, bagels, cakes, sandwiches, plus a well stocked bar. Selling pretty wonderful tassie booze, they offered multiple options for wine, cider and beer which included two taps. The stand out for me was the artwork that covered the MONA ROMA vessel. Graffiti covered most of the internal walls and set the scene for beautiful and confronting art that lay ahead at MONA. $20 a head return or $50 if you sat in the fancy cabin (which includes booze and canapés), the 25 minute trip was totally worth it.

Canapes on the way to MONA in Posh Pit!

Since we were on a once in a lifetime adventure in Tasmania, we decided on taking the Posh Pit to MONA. AUD $50 includes ferry back and forth from the MONA, appetizers, desserts, & beverages (Morilla wine, Moo Brew, coffee, water, etc etc) as well as the ferry back and forth. Since the ferry is $20, you're basically paying $30 for the food and wine and the "poshness" of riding in the Posh Pit. Totally thought it was worth it since we had two drinks both ways. Canapes were yum. Don't like dessert so can't comment on them except they were too sweet as are all desserts. Had the Morilla Pinot Noir..think it was the Praxis since that's the $10/glass one. Oh, no Moo Brew Dark but there was Moo Brew Pale Ale and the Moo Brew Pilsner. Had the Moo Brew Pale Ale which was yums. Ride to museum is about 30 minutes. Best way to travel!

The MONA ferry was made locally and started running March, 2013. The captain has many more interesting facts to share on the voyage to MONA! You can get coffee and small snacks on board for your trip over; and beer, wine and a cheese plate to toast your MONA adventure on the return journey. If you're planning on visiting MONA, I recommend travelling on MONA Roma.

After much deliberation, we took the Posh Pit to MONA and were quite happy that we did. The extra $30 cost per person gives you a flexible ticket in the first class section on the ferry including a small selection of canapés (4 per person, savory on the way to MONA and sweet on the way back to Hobart) plus unlimited beer, wine or soft drinks. There are other alcoholic drinks available, at charge. If you could manage 2 drinks in 30 minutes, it is worth the extra cost. I called in advance to ask about dietary requirements and they were happy to comply.

This is the BEST way to start the MONA experience. Great commentary from the captain, an informative spiel along the way. The Posh Pit is so worth it - free flow wine and sparkling from Morilla Estate, plus snacks. At the time of booking I was offered the chance to join a tasting experience at Morilla, which was a great way to finish the day.

Wow. Trip of a lifetime to Tasmania, one day in Hobart, one chance to do MONA, only one way to go about it - Posh Pit on the ferry, right? After half an hour of trying to convince my partner of the benefits in splurging the extra $30 for the best ticket, fuelling us with my enthusiasm and belief that this really is the best thing in Hobart so say EVERYBODY - I finally managed to get him enthusiastic about it. Sadly, we were embarrassingly shut down at the ticket desk when told there was 'no ferry today', the iconic MONA ferry had broken down and we could only take a random coach out to the gallery and return on a small ferry not actually affiliated with MONA. Same price as standard, nothing more than a sorry but deal with it. I'm open minded enough to accept that these things sometimes happen, but I am also smart enough to know that regularly serviced machinery doesn't just break down. A real disappointment and inconvenience for us today - something so highly recommended by friends, family, colleagues and the entire bloody internet was made unavailable to us because of a teams irresponsibility. Fingers crossed the MONA itself will be worth this sad little bus ride.

A great way to see Hobart from the sea while enjoying a historic explanation of the area. We saw birds that from a distance looked like penguins, but were actually something else. The price wasn't too much for the amazing views and relaxing journey to and from the Mona.

We rode in the Posh Pit on our way to MONA. So glad we did. As soon as we got on board they gave us a glass of bubbles. We went straight outside and stood on the deck. It was lovely until the boat picked up speed (it was in May, so freezing!). After a while we went inside and enjoyed another drink with our canapés. There was a delicious little stuffed potato skin, a crisp dehydrated apple cracker with some goats cheese and walnut and a toast with some pesto, cheese and tomato. On the return trip we had a taste of petite desserts - also delicious. Highly recommend MONA and the Posh Pit!

The food on the ferry is awesome! Glad I didn't eat first, so that I could get the Moroccan lamb sausage roll, yum! The ferry has camo paint - reckon its part of a secret Tasmanian Defence plan. To take over Melbourne maybe? Thing is, we are on board :-) Awesome experience!

Perfect way to travel to MONA. It was quiet when we went and could sit anywhere, including the sheep statues on the back deck. Options also included the 'posh pit' which includes wine and canapés but we decided to sit on the back deck and enjoy a couple of bevvies instead. Definitely travel by water! It also means you can enjoy a few cocktails at the bar in the bottom of the museum (a highlight).

The particular trip I did involved taking a bus down from this location in Hobart to nearby Bruny Island, and a boat to see the rugged south side of the island. Getting to the island was a hassle, as there is a ferry with limited capacity. I rather wish there had just been a boat from the city down to the island, which I imagine would take some doing but would be great. The waits were a pain. Once there, however, the tour had a lot to offer. They did morning tea beforehand and lunch after, both of which were simple but pretty good. I've seen tours skimp on food before but at least they put some effort in. Their pumpkin soup was pretty tasty, and the vegetarian sandwich included feta and a nice variety of things. The tour boat was a pretty prime watercraft, speedy and able to handle the rough waters. The tour was pretty well run, including some advance ginger tablets to ward off seasickness (which worked for me but not for everyone) and they included gloves, hats, and waterproof smocks for those of us who don't pack for the arctic breeze, and the climate did change markedly over the trip. The rock features on the island were well worth seeing, and the seal colony at the end fairly entertaining. Other wildlife included albatross and some fellow traveler dolphins on the way back; of course sightings will vary. The company's slickly produced video advertisements don't oversell the thing by a whole lot; the whole area is really quite spectacular. This trip didn't allow one to see the island itself except in passing, but the company offers plenty of different trips to this island and elsewhere. The guides were very much salt-of-the-earth locals, retired from other jobs, and the business overall struck me as being professionally and responsibly run. You'll pay a lot of money, but you'll get an experience.

We were up early so headed down to catch an early ferry to The island. We were ahead of the rush despite the busy summer season and unseasonably warm day and arrived at 6:50 and easily got on the 7 am ferry. (They warn you to arrive at least 30 min ahead). At that time of day the island was pretty quiet and after a quick breakfast we headed over to check in for the Cruise. They strongly recommend long pants and layers but as it was in the mid 80's and sunny, it wasn't necessary the day we went. Our skipper Michael and our "deckie" Ange, did a wonderful job explaining the landscapes while exploring the coastline. After sttarting our tour promptly on time at 10 am, we meandered along stopping to look at rock formations, caves and wildlife. They even poked the boat into a couple of caves and narrow spots and did a great job moving the boat around so everyone could get pictures. Despite a stiff wind, the ride was fairly smooth and the seats were comfortable and roomy. It got a bit rough once we reached the far end of the route where winds and currents from the southern ocean threw up some swells but that was short-lived and Michael did a superb job of working to minimize any discomfort or spray. That's where you see the Australian fur seals en mass so you have to tough it out a bit. On the return trip it's more about looking for dolphins and sea birds and again we weren't disappointed-several dolphins emerged right alongside the boat. Bottom line: this activity alone is reason enough to make the drive to Bruny. It was comfortable, informative and so well hosted and organized. A+ to the crew and staff. Highly recommended.
