There are a few ways to get to the Museum of Old and New Art (MONA) in Berriedale. If you have a car, you can drive there. There are also a couple buses that can bring you to the museum. But the easiest and most luxurious way to get there is to take the MONA Ferry.
The standard pricing for an one way or return trip is the same as taking the bus, but the ferry is slightly faster and you get to enjoy the view of the Derwent River along the way. If you want to make your trip even more memorable, you can opt for a seat in the Posh Pit which is basically a first class boat ride to the museum.
I read the previous Yelp reviews about the Posh Pit, so I decided to splurge a little and pay the extra $30 for it. What sold it for me was that I got a free winery tour at Moorilla Winery next to the MONA as part of the package.
The ferry leaves from Brooke Street Pier in Hobart. Purchase tickets upstairs and when it is close to your ferry board time, head downstairs to the entrance of the ferry. The Posh Pit is located to the left as it is a lounge at the front the boat.
The Posh Pit has an array of seating options. I decided to take a seat at one of the comfy chairs on the left. Once the boat starts moving, feel free to head outside to the private deck to take a glance at the Derwent River. It was a little chilly and windy, but I was able to take a bunch of beautiful shots of the water.
In addition to the seating and private deck amenities, the Posh Pit offers up complimentary beverages and a couple servings of canapes for the ride. The beverage options includes a selection of beer, cider and wine to choose from. The wine of which comes from Moorilla Winery.
To get my money's worth, I went a little overboard on the wine as I downed a few glasses of the sparkling riesling. But seeing I was going to a museum of weird art, I thought it seemed fitting. I did limit myself on the trip back to some local cider from Lost Pippin, which was very refreshing.
As for the canapes, they served three pieces of savory canapes on my way to the museum and three pieces of sweet canapes on the return to Hobart. The staff didn't say what the canapes were, so it was a bit of a game to figure out the flavors in these small bites.
The savory seemed to consist of smoked salmon, tomato pesto and an apple chip with walnut, jam and creamy cheese. The sweet canapes were all cake bites. One had cream and fruit, another had chocolate macadamia and the last seemed to be a raspberry cheesecake. Choosing between the two, I liked the savory over the sweet as the flavors were a bit more interesting.
If you are heading to visit the MONA, I absolutely recommend taking the ferry over driving or taking the bus. The views of the Derwent River make the ride worth it. And if you want to splurge a little, by all means give the Posh Pit a try. Especially if you are visiting Tasmania for the first time and don't live in Australia. read more
