I was teetering between 3 and 4 stars with Huong Viet. I was really craving Vietnamese tonight…read more After stopping by another place, which I found out was closed for vacation/holiday for a whole month (really?), I stumbled upon Huong Viet. No English menu. Not even a full Vietnamese menu. Only a German menu even with German names for the dishes. Towards the back, there was one page entitled something along the lines of "Vietnamese Specialties". This is the only page I saw names of dishes I actually recognized in Vietnamese! Not sure what all those other pages are supposed to be then... I ordered the Pho Dac Biet (Pho Special). This was definitely not the PDB I am used to back home. This is where I struggled between 3 or 4 stars. Some of the differences I liked. Others not so much. But overall, I decided to give it 4 stars. I do see myself coming back to try other things eventually. But for now, my overly detailed breakdown of their Pho Dac Biet. Noodles: I'm going to take a stab that the couple running this place is of northern Vietnamese decent. I only say that because the noodles were the wider ribbon style. Thinner squared cross section noodles are generally a Southern Vietnamese thing. Broth: Had a slight tamarind flavor to it. Similar to the Vietnamese sour soup (Canh Chua). Definitely was not expecting that in my Pho, but it was a nice surprise. Meat: Chicken, beef, and a couple of prawns. No tripe, tendon, beef balls, or brisket. But again, this is probably a regional Vietnamese thing (I'm happy to get input from someone who's more familiar with northern Vietnamese dishes). The beef was tough and not the best quality. The chicken was fine. But the prawns were probably the highlight of the meal. Vegetables: Onions, cilantro, and ginger from what I could tell. That last one threw me off as I'm not the biggest fan of ginger. I usually pick out the ginger from my food. Unless it's pickled ginger. And this was not. But alas, I ate it anyway. The onions were diced instead of sliced. But that's just my preference. No side of basil, bean sprouts, jalapeño, and lemon. But again, north vs south is my guess. Condiments: There was no Nuoc Mam (fish sauce) on the table. Not having this is definitely no-no in my book. Except for when I'm so hungry that I've nearly finished my food by the time I've realized I should have asked for it. Next time! There was soy sauce. But seriously, who would put that in their pho? Fortune cookie: -1 for even having fortune cookies at a Vietnamese restaurant. +1 for the fortune being in German, English, French, and some other language I didn't recognize. Who'd have thought I'd be learning German from a cookie!

Really delicious though simple food. The service is also great. The ambience is simple and…read morenon-pretentious, but really, as long as it's delicious - who cares? Will gladly come again!

Didn't expect the best pho I've had in a long time to be in Munich, but here we are. After a streak…read moreof disappointing bowls elsewhere, this one made up for all the crummy pho I've had lately...it was perfectly balanced broth, fresh toppings, and all around comforting. The rest of our meal was just as delicious, which made the experience even better. Our table ordered: Duck curry Chicken egg rolls Chicken satay ("best satay sauce I've had" -friend) W3 Beef pho Beef vermicelli Heads up: several of the cocktails pictured on Yelp weren't available, so don't get too attached to the drink menu photos. I ordered the rose lassi instead, and it turned out to be light, fragrant, and absolutely delicious.

I came in around 18:00 and ordered some juice, the fried bananas with ice cream, a couple of summer…read morerolls, and the large Pho Hanoi. I asked for the fried bananas to come out first because I was hungry. It came out last, after everything else. The portion size for the large Pho Hanoi was disappointing given the steep price. It tasted okay. The accompanying herbs and bean sprouts were seriously lacking for my preference. At around 18:15, I went to pay for an online order which my husband had put through because the only option for online orders is to pay at the restaurant. The waitress offered to give me his takeaway order after processing the payment, but I told her I was still eating and would get it on my way out. I was still finishing up my meal when another waiter rudely plopped the bag onto my table and proclaimed that it was mine. The reason I had not wanted the takeaway order immediately was that my husband had ordered the fried bananas with ice cream and I was concerned that the ice cream would melt. Apparently that was not an issue because when you do takeaway the fried bananas with ice cream is ONLY two sad pieces of fried bananas. Was there a discount for the lack of ice cream, fruit, or wafer you get with the dish if you dine-in? Nope, they charged us the full price while failing to deliver half the dish! The menu item literally has the word ice cream in it so I felt really cheated. We got two pieces of half a banana, so basically one banana for €6.90! At least be honest about it and give me a heads up. Another fail was that they did not provide any fish sauce or sauce period for his lemongrass chicken vermicelli dish or his green mango salad. What is Vietnamese food without fish sauce?!? The lemongrass chicken was also very dry. If you choose to order takeaway, please learn from my oversight and be sure to check your order in the restaurant. Personally, I will never come back. If this is the best pho in Munich (like one of the reviewers said) then I would not suggest getting pho in Munich.
