The worst! HJR was my landscaping company when I wanted to beautify my back lawn in April. We had just gotten a new puppy and were looking forward to spending all summer in our backyard playing with him . I asked the owner Henry what he would advise given our primary needs: having a fuller and stronger lawn for our dog and the fact that our yard is almost entirely shaded by trees. He assured us through numerous conversations that he knew exactly what to do, and advised that ripping up the existing lawn and installing Kentucky Bluegrass sod would be the best option. He originally said the entire process would take 3 weeks. We paid him $4,600 in cash (he requested cash), and he ripped up our existing lawn, laid top soil, and put down the sod. My husband was home when he was laying the sod and mentioned to him that the sod had brown spots all over and asked if there was something wrong with it. Henry said no, that the spots would go away and if there was any issue with any sections of sod, that he would replace them. Once installed, Henry then told us that we had to stay off of it for another five weeks! Now we wouldn't be able to set foot on it until the end of June! We just accepted it and started to look forward to July. After the sod was installed we called Henry numerous times to explain that the sod didn't look like it was doing well. The seams of the sod were not cut properly upon installation and were folded up around the edges and those brown spots were getting worse. My husband also found two sprinkler heads that they buried. Henry came by and said he would treat it with fungicide and lay seed, but we would need to wait to cut the lawn because the sod needs more time to take root. Weeks passed and we told him numerous times that the lawn was getting very long but was not yet taking root. Finally with the lawn so long that it couldn't stand upright, someone from his company hand mowed when it was wet. After mowing, the entire lawn was yellow!! The green grass on top had been covering all of the grass underneath which was all rotting. Henry said he would treat it again. Fast forward - by August the sod was still mostly yellow, very thin, had still not taken root at all, had brown spots all over, entire patches of dead sod were clearly visible all around, and if you pulled on the grass in any area, the grass and/or the entire piece of sod would come right up with almost no effort. My husband spoke to Henry again and explained that he wanted to work with him but at some point we need to know this is going to be fixed. He asked for a date for resolution. Henry said give it two more weeks. My Husband said, this is the last chance and I don't want you to rush, so if you need more time than that tell me now. Henry confirmed that by September 15th the lawn would be in good condition (including replacing the back 300 feet of sod which had been left over from another customer's installation). Come September 10th, they had done nothing, so my husband texted him, reminding him that the 15th was only five days away. Henry didn't respond. Days later we received a letter in the mail and a contract outlining an entirely new set of work to be done and asking for us to agree that after Henry had taken those steps (steps he had tried before that were unsuccessful) that HJR Landscaping would no longer be responsible for caring for the lawn. Of course, this "offer" was ridiculous. We responded that HJR could perform this work but if the lawn still is not delivered to us, then HJR would need to fix it or refund us. We paid for a lawn and that's all we wanted. He never responded to us and because we paid cash, we have no recourse. Our backyard is now just dirt and wispy pieces of dead sod. We feel cheated and abused by this terrible company and the owner Henry - they stole $4,600, a tremendous amount of time, and our summer in the backyard from us, and now, we still have to hire another company to fix everything. read more
