Good Family Fun or a great Sunday Funday. River tubing along the Cherohala Skyway in the Tellico…read moreRiver. Rental prices are for the day and you go tubing as much as you want within their operating hours. Prices vary by the type of tube you choose and any accessories you rent (oars and push off sticks). I opted with the premium tube with a cup holder and head/back rest accompanied by an oar. The oar really helped to keep you in the strongest current and out of low lying places in the river. They do require you to have a life vest and will provide them free of charge. If you personally decide to wear it or not - it is at your risk but you have to have one in your possession while tubing. Once checked in, you load up on to a small bus and up the river they take you. Your drop off location is "Iron Works Grille" parking lot. Iron Works is also a great location frequented by motorcycle riders traversing the Cherohala Skyway. They have food, cocktails, and occasional live band inside and on their patio. Upon arrival at the drop off location, the staff provides with your tube to float. We entered the river right at the edge of Iron Works property. We set sailing down the river at a leisurely pace. The overall trip is only .8 miles back to the starting point of Big Bears parking lot. Upon end of float, you exit the river and the staff retrieve your tube. You keep your life jacket and accessories. If you decide to take another trip you load up on the next available bus and repeat your trip. They have portable restrooms on site and a small shop to purchase t-shirts and tubing accessories. The staff was friendly and well organized. I will give them a high recommendation for being the New Kids on the Block.

My husband is obsessed with trains, so when you vacation in Chattanooga- trains seem to be infused…read moreinto the vacation time! If the all day trip had been available- we would have done that too! The Hiawassee River loop was fantastic. You arrive in a field and park and wait for the train to arrive, seems kinda odd- but I'm guessing it saves the small town a lot of hassle. John went all in and got the dome car, upper deck seating- which means glass curved windows and glass dome ceiling. Panoramic views. We were car five- back of the bus. Our all in tickets also gave us snacks, snacks and more snacks- and soda, water, coffee and hot chocolate. We boarded and had about 30 minutes till departure and familiarized ourselves with the brochure, got some (you guessed it) snacks and found restrooms. Then the train horns sounded and we were OFF! I was excited to go through the small town of Reliance- where my sister's family has property and I vacationed with her years ago and white water kayaked on the Hiawassee River! We even passed the rafting outpost! We chugged along, the tracks following the river, saw a couple water falls cascading down rock faces, plenty of foliage (although the storm had downed most of the leaves) and just fantastic views. I took entirely too many photos. There was also the great opportunity to peek out the vestibule windows!!! AKA Selfie hanging out the window of a train kinda like a happy puppy! And- there were 2 next to each other- which provided an excellent photo op with John! Grinning like felons! The tour included plenty of local history and interesting railroad facts. Plus all the information on each of the 5 passenger cars. The loop has railroad trestle that we go under and then on and the same railroad track runs parallel to itself for about a 1/4 mile as it goes around the mountain and up. Once at the top, the engine unhooks and goes on a side track to rehook to train car #5 and just like, we were at the front of the train! While the engine is moving- our seats were flipped to face the correct direction. Very cool! Same scenery on the way back, naturally. We even were treated some good ole fashioned pickin~ bluegrass treat, a banjo playing conductor! I simply cannot recommend them enough!!! If you are planning a trip- please include them in your adventures!

Our guide, Spencer, was incredibly skilled as he could have navigated blindfolded... yes, he's that good! Spencer was also an absolute blast to surf the river with... very friendly, knowledgable and well-traveled... he had plenty of amusing stories to share and kept us all very engaged. I should also mention that Spencer was also seriously great at gaging our comfort level vs. our spirit of adventure... therefore, he was able to navigate us down various paths of the river making it challenging and thrilling for us! While there are plenty of white water outfitters to pick from, we intentionally picked a smaller outfitter and we were so glad we did... we felt our experience was more personal, less generic, and seriously less crowded! I only wished I had sat in the front of the boat where the photographer was situated... that would have made a fantastic birthday photo. The only other "disappointment" was that Cascade Outdoors advertised about their HOT SHOWERS which was super important to us and was one of the main reasons we chose Cascade Outdoors... but there was NO hot water available and the lack of being able to take a good shower after the rafting trip did impede on our other plans. Other than that, Cascade Outdoors and our guide, Spencer, offered us a fabulously fun white water experience on the Ocoee River! We can't wait to return!!! :)

Started railroad on this and other lines when they were working railroads at 28 years of age. He had a lot of stories and railroad history about this area and others. I took the Hiwassee Loop trip. Most of the workers on the train, conductors and hosts were all retired railroad workers. The engineer was retired United Airlines pilot who got his train engineer license after he retired. Excellent historic narration along the way. I cannot recommend this trip enough. 4.5 hours up Bald Mountain along the Hiwassee River. There's a visitor's center, many miles of hiking, picnic areas, primitive camping, fishing, boating, and canoeing. We arrived and went white water rafting with a third party on the rapids. These rivers were the site of the Olympic water sports in 1996. We then went to the visitors' center, and then drove around the campground, then the scenic byway to some gorgeous overlooks. Definitely stunning and worth the visit. I wanted to do a little hike while I dried off from the rafting, but there wasn't really a clear map of the trails in the area with the mileage and difficulty like at every other park we've been to. Other than that, we really enjoyed out time here.
