Started railroad on this and other lines when they were working railroads at 28 years of age. He had a lot of stories and railroad history about this area and others. I took the Hiwassee Loop trip. Most of the workers on the train, conductors and hosts were all retired railroad workers. The engineer was retired United Airlines pilot who got his train engineer license after he retired. Excellent historic narration along the way. I cannot recommend this trip enough. 4.5 hours up Bald Mountain along the Hiwassee River. But, again, best part was my 45 minute conversation with the 88 year old flagman.

There's a visitor's center, many miles of hiking, picnic areas, primitive camping, fishing, boating, and canoeing. We arrived and went white water rafting with a third party on the rapids. These rivers were the site of the Olympic water sports in 1996. We then went to the visitors' center, and then drove around the campground, then the scenic byway to some gorgeous overlooks. Definitely stunning and worth the visit. I wanted to do a little hike while I dried off from the rafting, but there wasn't really a clear map of the trails in the area with the mileage and difficulty like at every other park we've been to. Other than that, we really enjoyed out time here.

I believe he will also cook you breakfast(not free).

Cooper Creek Campground is absolutely the most beautiful, off the beaten path, places I've ever…read moretraveled and it's practically in Atlanta's back yard! Located on the beautiful and noisy Cooper/Mulky Creek just an hour north of Dahlonega up Hwy 60 and then up some of the most beautiful and winding mountain roads that make you think you're never going to get there! By the time you turn on to Forest Service Rd 236 (a beautiful and peaceful dirt mountain road that climbs up through the pine and hardwood forests), you realize there is something amazing waiting for you. And there is. Cooper Creek Campground is like reaching a little slice of heaven. Fifteen campsites scatter through out the lush forest, and five of them sit right on the banks of Cooper/Mulky Creek. I advise getting there early during the week so you can get a creek side spot ... there is nothing like it! The creek is rocky and noisy and if you fish, the trout are plentiful! I walked the loop and all of the campsites were beautiful and within easy walking distance to the creek. As a solo hiker and camper, I chose spot #1 for the way the creek opened up and the trees opened up around my tent site to give me a clear view of a beautiful moon. I also liked the quiet solitude of this site ... few cars passed here since it's on the back loop. The campground hosts also live two spots up. As an avid (delirious almost) rock stacker, I fell in love with this creek. The rocks are amazing and perfect for stacking and balancing. It was so relaxing I stacked till after dark and was up just after sunrise stacking again! The pine cones in camp are plentiful, so I got a good pine smoke going and didn't have the first mosquito or black fly. I'm telling you ... this place is heaven! After dark a bunch of deer came through my camp and lapped at the creek for almost a half hour. Two fawns frolicked in the fern thickets next to my tent for a while and were bouncing around like puppies! With the light of the moon, I felt like I had a front row seat for natures big show that night! Also, there are synchronous fireflies here, which surprised me. Just after dark during the Summer Solstice, I thought it was kids playing with flashlights, but it was fireflies, all blinking in unison! It was amazing! I can't WAIT to go back! In fact, now that I'm home, I'm missing it. Cooper Creek is open year round and keep their gates open 24 hours a day. You won't get a phone signal here, so you may as well turn it off ... the solitude is amazing! Each site has a tent pad, grills, lantern pole and a picnic table. There are also bear bins that are an easy walk from each site for discarding trash. For hikers, you won't be disappointed. There are five interconnected trails that start in or near the camping area (Yellow Mountain Trail- 3.2 miles, Connector Trail- 0.4 miles, Mill Shoals Trail- 0.9 miles, Shope Gap Trail- 0.6 miles, and Cooper Creek Trail- 1.7). I found myself hiking in and out and exploring trail after trail. The abundance of trees at Cooper Creek keep the temperatures down, much cooler than up on the main road. I paid $10 a night for my site. There are faucets for drinking water and there are two vaults for bathrooms. There are no electric hook ups or dump stations. Primitive camping at it's finest! There are no reservations ... everything is first come, first serve. Have fun everyone!

A campground host makes daily multiple rounds throughout the area in a SxS, insuring order is maintained and is happy to welcome all. Setting right on the lake, they offer kayaks and pedal boats for their customers as well as a sandy beach for the kids. The little store stocks simple amenities such as ice, firewood, ice cream, t-shirts, and some basic camping supplies. Overall a very pleasant experience whenever staying here.

Did the river on the Ducky inflatable kayaks…read more Good fun. We had signed up to go tubing, but got some advice from the proprietor. Good advice, as it turned out. After kayaking the river, not so sure if tubes woulda been a good thing. Not really a tubing body of water. It's a wide river with twists and turns and islands. Lots to maneuver around. Not to mention the occasional rock and/or tree branch. On a tube, you'd be at the mercy of the river gods. Anyway. Park in their lot, check in and grab your paddles and life jackets (required). Trip is around 2 hours. Minimal direction. Basically, get in the yaks, flow downstream, get out just before the bridge.

The staff members were really helpful…read more We brought our own inflatable kayak that is rated for class IV white water rapids and this river has some class II. We paid a small fee and were taken up river about 6 miles and dropped off. We had a really good time. This was our first time taking our personally owned kayak down white water rapids, but not our first time on whitewater. One of the staff members asked if we were familiar with this river and gave us some tips as to which sides we should be in throughout the trip back down. It was very helpful! When we arrived back there was a torrential downpour and they let us pull our kayak up underneath the overhang to deflate and take shelter, and when the rain calmed, they let us pull our truck up to get our gear safely inside without having to carry it all the way back to the parking lot. Afterwords we went shopping in the gift shop and bought a couple things. They have a really nice variety of items for souvenirs to suit many different interests and tastes. We will be back for sure! Best times to come are on weekdays. Weekends are very busy.

We hiked to the summit of Tray Mountain via Andrew's Cove. Although we had been to Tray Mountain…read morebefore, it was usually via Unicoi; this was our first time using the Andrew's Cove route. The hike was nearly 10 miles round trip and quite challenging. The weather was perfect, though a bit humid from recent rains, and we were soaked with sweat. We felt like we finally found a team with determination and patience. One of our new team members, nicknamed AlphaGo, had previously hiked ABC and EBC in Nepal. He was an amazing hiker, full of knowledge, humility, and a righteous manner. We truly enjoyed his company, along with his wife's.

Water is available via a hand water pump across from site #8 and the toilets are vault toilets but were well kept and did not smell horrible. The stream is gorgeous stream and loud enough to drown out most road noise. There are some hazardous trees and one 6inch tree did fall while we were there this weekend during a thunderstorm. At the back of the campground is a ~2 mile trail that connects to the AT. Most sites have a tent pad that will accommodate a 10'x10' tent. Sites 2, 4, and 8 driveways can really only accommodate 1 car and there are no extra parking spots. Driveways for sites 1, 3, 5, 6, 7, 9, and 10 can accommodate 2 cars. Sites 1 and 3 are adjacent to the road and is going to be impacted by road noise. There is no campground host so be prepared to either scavenge wood or buy it in town, same goes for ice.

The noise isn't bad,and they have a quiet time from 10pm-8am, so sleeping is simple. Bathrooms are clean and the campground hosts are very nice. Once even brought local caught, fried trout and "Mexican" corn bread to our campsite one evening. My only complaint is that the website tells you to not bring in any foreign firewood, and that they have some for sale. When we got there, they were out of fire wood and we were told that they were "waiting on the guy" for wood. "Fortunately" he came saving me a trip into town, or so I thought. The wood they delivered to our site, two loads - $50 worth - was so green and wet that I had to run into town to buy fire starter bricks just to get it going. Batoning the wood into kindling and even shaving it into starter pieces proved futile. Even after getting the fire going, it wasn't very warm as it was struggling to burn the wood that smoked and sizzled. That is my only complaint for a lovely site. There are tons of trails and scenery to take in. I highly recommend the campground!

They are also dog friendly and even have a horse friendly camp ground that's a little higher up the mountain. At the horse camp, it's more primitive with no showers and an enclosed port-a potty, but it's still a clean and beautiful wooded area. The camp store is pretty well stocked and they sell firewood. It's a bit expensive, but it saves you a trip down the mountain into town. I've stayed there three times and every other campground I've been to just doesn't seem to compare.

Short drive to the power station below the dam and in we went. Stopped on on of the many islands for lunch. Back at Webb Brother s and our new neighbor was watching to pull us out. We did tip once and lost one paddler momentarily. It is fun and challenging for beginners.
