We stopped to explore the old hotel. If one is into old hotels that have "possibilities" then this is the place to stay. No food on site ever since COVID, which is now 4 years since inception. Not sure that's a good excuse. Hopefully the renovations and upkeep continue on pace so the grand old hotel can live a full life again! read more

Stay away in the winter. The place was freezing cold. It's historic alright, the mattress felt like was from the 1921 era, plus there was a total lack of amenities. The final straw was a fly in the coffee that other people bragged about. read more

Had a wonderful stay at this clean, unique, very pet-friendly historic hotel. We were unexpectedly stuck in the area due to car trouble. We'd made inquiries about decent hotels in La Grande and came across this one thanks to Yelp - made the (short, scenic) drive and thank goodness we didn't cave for a chain hotel! It's just one of those grande dames who remind you that once upon a time, travel was this romantic, luxurious experience, and you had every right to expect Italian marble floors and chandeliers. The rooms are comfy and the owner Charlie was really awesome, even going out of his way to help me and my friend connect with a local mechanic. As other reviewers have said, if you want flat-screen TV's and an anonymous box to sleep in, check out the way-overpriced chains of La Grande. Or, drive 15 minutes down the road for a lovely and memorable experience. read more

What a great find in eastern Oregon! Stayed in their "Davis Brothers" themed room in all its cowboy kitsch awesomeness. The wood-paneled double shower was sweet. The historic hotel vibe was special. A fun trip back time! Each room has it own theme and if they are vacant you can ask to see them. It's a work in progress but an interesting bit of history. Good food and conversation. They will even make bfast if you need it in the off season. We stayed near Christmas and it was quiet but nice. There is a park for kiddos out back too. read more

I loved this place! Yes, it's a bit quirky and you're not going to find flat screens TV in every room or plywood hotel furniture. But, those 'missing' things are what help make this such a fun place to stay. The historic details haven't been tampered with (even down to the push button light switches, claw foot tubs, etc.). It's very clean and all the rooms have a unique 'theme' without being over the top. The room I stayed in (the 19th hole), was huge and had everything I needed to feel relaxed and comfortable. The restaurant looked nice and although I didn't have time to eat breakfast there, the food smelled delicious. What a refreshing and welcome change from boring chain hotels. I'm a fan and will most definitely be back! read more

Three story brick hotel built in 1921 with rooms redone with themes. We stayed in the Garden Room-two rooms joined by a shared bathroom. Sink in each room. Very clean and comfortable, friendly with heaters and air conditioners. Lovely common areas. Large front verandah with comfortable chairs. Very pleasant, relaxed area. Big common areas inside: second floor TV room, library, huge main floor parlor and old-fashioned lobby. Elegant restaurant and bar that's usually open. Complimentary Tea and coffee each morning. Front door locks at 9 PM. RV park also attached to hotel. Nice little town. Great little park surrounding hotel with fun playground and outside pergola. Hotel and RV park would be a great place for a wedding or family reunion. It's inexpensive. Bear in mind, this isn't a corporate run establishment. It's run by real people who are working as hard as they can so be nice. read more

We loved out stay here! The Annie Oakley Room was nicely decorated, very comfortable and unique. Ruth and her husband were so nice and we loved Rosie (the hotel dog). We had breakfast and dinner there and it was amazing, then after that we walked around the cute town and then came back to the hotel to play some pool. We will definitely be back :) read more

Stayed here when skiing at Anthony Lakes last winter. I usually love historic hotels, but this one has not been updated with modern amenities. While the hotel lobby looks impressive, the rooms are small and lacking basic creature comforts. When we returned from the bar down the street (LG Brewski's Public House) after a fun night of playing pool and listening to live music, we found that we were locked outside. We had to press the buzzer to wake the person on staff at the hotel who opened the front door of the hotel. Our room key did not open the hotel front door. Very odd. We will stay elsewhere on our next visit to NE Oregon. read more

The Union Hotel was amazing. This was no chain hotel, it was unique and full of so much history and charm. It was an experience that takes you back in time. The lobby looks like it came out of old 1920's movie. The walls were covered with beautiful art and antiques. The room was warm and cozy and very clean. The room we stayed in was spacious with a full kitchen and sitting area. It felt like home away from home. Charlie the owner was an exceptional host and made us feel very comfortable during our stay. If ever in the area this is definitely worth the stay. Looking forward to a return trip! read more

What a find!! A charming hotel with beautiful decor. The theme rooms were fun and relaxing!! Have not had a bath in a old clawfoot tub in ages. The meals in the restaurant was excellent. This fool agreed to host a wedding party and put up out of State "associates" then cancelled two weeks before the date claiming he couldn't afford to front the eel juice for the for the cabbage he agreed to. After saying that to the groom he wouldn't yap no more. Losers like this are just begg'in for "The Broderick" but what can you do? Know how to tell if this mug is lyin? His mouth is mov'in. We stayed at this wonderful hotel for two nights. The room was very comfortable and the staff was warm and friendly. We were there for a funeral and the owners were so kind. They have a wonderful dog that is just the sweetest! Our three year old grandson played with her and shared a treat. Lovely place, lovely people. This is not a fancy place but I wouldn't hesitate sending friends there. A wonderful experience and the food was great too! Very accommodating to our little guy that wanted noodles for dinner, the chef made him his very own alfredo, something that wasn't even on the menu that night, but thought he might like it better that the "adult" food. We came to north eastern Oregon from central Oregon because I had never been. One of the reasons was so that we could stay at the Historic Union Hotel! We stayed for four nights and It did not disappoint!! Charlie and Ruth were so friendly and down to earth - it was a treat to get to know them - anything we asked for was met with smiles and a genuine helpfulness. We stayed in the Hoffman Suite - this could have easily slept 6 - but we suffered through (LOL). It's an old hotel - you have to look past things that aren't there - TV for one - although there was a parlour downstairs with a huge TV and a pool table, tables already for cards, puzzles, etc. Who needs a TV? There was also a small library upstairs with a TV and (gasp) books to read! We so enjoyed ourselves - if you are used to going to Best Westerns and the like - I can say you will be disappointed - but if you are looking for something truly unique with a bit of history - Charlie and Ruth will make you feel like family! read more

We came for dinner only. We walked into an impressive, historic property and were greeted by a friendly sheepdog. It is attractive. The restaurant service was fairly good though sometimes there wasn't enough help. The wine selection was adequate though my first selection wasn't available. There is a full bar. The relish tray was nice to see and looked good. The salad was good. The first basket of bread was sufficient for four of our table of six but we got more when we asked. The beef was poor quality and not everyone got it the way they ordered. The vegetables weren't good. The potatoes just ok. We didn't have dessert but it looked good. Let me start with the good. It's a super cool old building that is conveniently located, it has some cool furnishings, the beds are comfy, and the water pressure in the showers is fantastic! On to the bad. No maid service. We stayed 6 days. No one ever cleaned our room. Bring all your own sundries; their supplies are like what you'd find in a dive motel. And the staff (owner) does NOT want to be bothered. With anything, but especially not with being a food server. She groaned at the prospect of my sister eating here and joyfully suggested she eat across the street at Gravy Daves. Who does that? read more

Response to Owners reply. You have many excuses but offered no solutions when we were there. You claim you would have changed our room to the first floor, but you never offered that option. If you had, we would have changed rooms. Even if we had changed rooms it's still about 8 steps up and no handicap access that we saw. You said we should have left the key so you could clean the room. You should have said something. We only asked for 1 key instead of 2 even though you offered 2 keys so we know you had a key. We've been many places including Europe, never did we have to leave the key and request housekeeping! You said you would call us if you were able to rent the room but quite honestly with the sour attitude that we were given from you and your staff we knew you had no intention of renting that room to another customer. The woman who works for you told us there were no calls or walk ins. We know why! We weren't surprised because your hotel seemed to be virtually empty. We went to a different hotel and rented a room that had all the amenities and we were greeted with a smile. Something that you and your staff never gave us which is something that is just a common courtesy. We checked back the following morning to ask if the room had been rented which we already knew the answer to because the woman at your counter said she would call us if she was able to rent it to someone else. As we were in town for a funeral to bury my father's remains we were in town and could have returned the key at any time. You stated housekeeping was upon request which is something we haven't experienced before as all other hotels just seem to provide it. We asked about TV and we were told you didn't have it but you counter clerk gave us a snobby little reply that she had it but she works there. She also informed us that it would be too expensive for them to put it in because the hotel was built in 1921. In the conversation that we had with you, you informed us that televisions weren't available in 1921. I commented to you that neither was AC. Since AC came up I will add that your tiny little window air conditioner was less than adequate. You told us that your rooms were too small for television but we've been on numerous cruise ships that managed to provide it in their small cabins and I will add that our traveling companions felt that their room was little more than a closet with a bed. While you called it The Clark Gable room, there were just 2 pictures of the man and they assumed that was the reason. They were less than pleased with their accommodations. We asked about ice and again with a snobby little reply we were told no. There was no conversation stating that we could request it. read more

My husband and I had such a lovely time here. Everyone was so friendly and accommodating. Felt more like home than a hotel. If you are looking for new, new, new this is not the place for you. On the other hand if you are looking for a hotel that has charm, warmth and lots of history - this 1900's hotel is just the place, lots of old antiques. The food & service was very good. Such a cool place! We try to steer clear of regular hotels and are always looking for something unique with character. This is the spot for us! Since it was early February we had the hotel to ourselves the night we were there so it felt like staying with family. The owners are so nice and working very hard to continue the restoration of the building. The rooms are all decorated with a different theme and have no television (THANK YOU) I enjoy places that connect people to the past and to each other and eliminating that distraction was certainly appreciated! We ate breakfast there the next morning and it was lovely and they gave us plenty to eat. Loved Rosie the sheepdog! We brought our little dog along for the trip and they did just fine together. If you like an experience and not just a bed for the night (although ours was so comfortable), you will enjoy this little gem in Union Oregon! read more
