The Barn of Harpers Ferry - Great little bar, well-stocked, skilled, fast and friendly

    The Barn of Harpers Ferry

Great music! Excellent whiskies and beers. Ambiance like a really nice barn :-)…read more We wanted a Memorial Day (2025) daytrip from greater-Baltimore. Harper's Ferry is very close! Like an hour (ish) drive. So what's happening in HP? The Barn out Washington St. had a MemorialDay weekend all-day mostly-country music event 2pm to 10:30pm! Very nice. They have a great little bar inside, and sometimes have food from one of the restaurants across the parking lot, or just walk over for takeout, or i think i read that they deliver here. By the way, parking can get a little tight for a bigger event like this one, but we were early enough, maybe 1pm, and we scored a space when someone left. I might as well add that there's several clean restrooms sort of across from the bar. We settled into a huge comfy couch near the back of the hall, behind the seating for roughly 30 at tables and picnic tables. There was also seating for roughly 20 at tables out on a deck. The first solo singer-guitarist, D.C.'s Kate Smiles, had a lovely voice and sweetly original interpretations of rock and pop and country songs that i knew, and a presence that made me say, Hey, Wow, I can relax in this mellow mood with a really nice whiskey from a list that my local bar would envy. By the way, they were out of the local whiskey, Devil's Due, so i had a warming fiery oaky slightly-sweet Elijah Craig bourbon, neat, with a water back. Mmmmm. The second musician, W.V.'s Andrew Copenhaver, moved among soulful blues and country, some classics, some modern. He could put an edge on his voice, and he could hit some deep bass notes, so it was a real pleasure when he gave us Folsom Prison Blues. When you can hit that low note, you have a right to do some Johnny Cash. By now i was into some crisp local beers. That little bar really has everything, including a versatile bartender who made every drink we knew, and we sampled his skills as the third musician, NoVA's Mark Cullinane, took the stage. He had a wide range of country songs, including a moving original that made us feel we were driving in our pickup behind his dad's. He had a great rich tone and great range. Like the second musician, he used some kind of looper to create full layers of harmony. What with all the beverages, we started to fade a little as the music moved into the set by NoVA's seriously-country Rowdy Ace Band around 8pm. They really lit up the hall and the patio and probably a good piece of nearby Harpers Ferry. We eventually moved on to our reservations for dinner across the parking lot at Snallygaster's restaurant. But that's another story. We had a terrific afternoon and evening. The Barn will definitely be one of our go-to spots in this town, and we'll be looking to hear these musicians again!

The house is beautifully decorated and makes you feel right at home. We loved how we could stay at Rock Spring Retreat a few days before our wedding and have our friends and family stay with us at the venue. Tom and Walt were extremely accommodating and were very helpful with the planning process of our wedding. They constantly would check in with us and communicate any updates. We had a ton of questions and they were always happy to help us! We can't wait to visit Rock Spring Retreat again! Thank you Tom and Walt for everything!!

Everyone who attended raved about the beauty and character of the house, the historic elements, the pond and the hedge maze! The attention to detail is exquisite! No detail went unnoticed by them and you can tell they put so much time and effort into making sure their guests were comfortable and enjoyed their stay. I couldn't have dreamed of a better blend of historic elements and modern comforts. Being in the house took me straight back to the 1700s in the best way possible! Now for the details: The bed, sheets and down comforter were the best I've ever slept on! The kitchen came fully stocked with everything we needed to host a party! The Edison lights and fire pit were the scene of many good times with friends and family. Some of our guests even fished the pond (catch and release). The library was by far my favorite room. We could hardly count the fireplaces also! The sunroom was a lovely addition to overlook the back of the property. Even the art on the walls made me smile. The furniture and decor were clearly picked out with an artistic eye that overlooked no small detail. The historic doorbell was the cherry on top! It's impossible to list all the things we loved about the property, we could go on for days! We are so grateful to have had the opportunity to make so many memories here at your estate! Thank you so so much from the bottom of our hearts! Lauren and Steve

If there were more stars, this would qualify. This place is absolutely magical. I am not a camper…read morein any sense of the word. When the opportunity came to spend a girls weekend away we opted for Glamping as an adventure to explore and enjoy time away to relax and unwind. I am so glad that I stepped outside of my comfort zone and enjoyed a fantastic two nights at this absolutely stunning and wonderful place. There aren't enough adjectives to describe how truly amazing this place is. It has to be experienced. Before we were even leaving we were already planning our next visit. This will easily become an annual event. No doubt. This retreat would also be a terrific place for bachelor/bachelorette parties, girls weekends, guys weekends, birthday celebrations, baby moons, honeymoons, book clubs... absolutely any reason to escape into the arms of nature where you are surrounded by the beauty of the area and amazing amenities. Regardless of how many people are in your group, this place has an option that is not only affordable but also guaranteed to give a fantastic experience to all guests in your group. There are cabins that fit 12 people (their own shower/bathroom, mini fridge, microwave, fire pit with chairs, grill), yurts (personal fire pit, covered picnic table, outdoor chairs, grill), and a main lodge room (keyless secured entry, sleeps 8, connected to communal kitchenette, showers, restrooms, lounge space, grills, fire pit). See their socials for the options. There's also a terrific map that will show you where all the amenities are located in relation to the sleeping options. Regardless of which one you pick, you will have your own personal space along with clean and well stocked communal areas. We decided on a yurt. This was on a platform with parking on both sides if needed, our own personal covered picnic table, personal grill, supply of kindling/firewood, outdoor seating, two queen beds, two benches and small table, air conditioning, two electric fans, fairy lights inside, and a small lamp. We were absolutely blown away by the amount of details that were taken in this space to make our stay comfortable and welcoming. Upon entering there's a box of necessities that were on the bed. This was full of flash lights, lighters, fire starters, fly swatter, guest book, pen, bug spray, walker talkie (in case of emergency), and some chargers. The air was already on so the untidy was comfortable when we arrived. This is a self check in and out retreat where they communicate via text and email alerting you to your accommodations. Each bed had linens provided, 2 pillows, comforters, and additional blankets at the bottom if needed. There were 16 available outlets for your things and two USB plugs. There are throw rugs and a two large entrances on either side of the yurt (both with a screen and a closed panel). There are 3 zippered windows that you can open and the top of the yurt has clear panels that you can see out of if wanted. We kept the 'blinds' up to make it cooler since this was August. It's nice to have the option to open the cloth 'blinds' from the top of the yurt so you can see the stars through the plastic panels. We kept the windows closed as we had the air and the two fans running (one oscillating) which really made the yurt comfortable even in the summer heat. When the sun went down, it was even cooler. There's a mat out front for wiping feet and a plastic mat with sides in the inside so you can take off your shoes to keep your yurt clear of dirt. There's also a metal trash can with a lid. Everything you need is here inside. It is absolutely adorable!!! The fairy lights just add to the vibe at night. The yurts do not have a kitchen or a bathroom. You have to walk to the communal area. There are two - one in the main lodge for yurts 1-6 and another smaller bath house/kitchenette for yurts 7-9. Yurts 1-3 are in the meadow. Yurts 4-6 are in a wooded area. Yurts 7-9 are near the cabins and have a much shorter walk to the smaller amenities than the others. If you need to use the restroom frequently throughout the evening, I would suggest yurt 7 as it is just a few feet from the communal bathroom. The communal spaces have been well thought out and are so incredibly clean! The main lodge had a large fridge stocked with their Meade that you can purchase, a full size fridge to throw your food in, a freezer full of ice for purchase, a sink, a coffee pot, microwave, hot pot for tea, seating area, and trash cans. There's also paper plates, bowls, utensils for you to use. They also have water bottle fillet station throughout the property and item for sale. There's snacks, Mac and cheese, ice, charcoal, gloves, hats, water bottles, shirts, etc throughout the property for sale. Simply use the QR to make the purchase. Super convenient. The main lodge had a massage room, shower room with 4 private showers where towels are provided (washrags are not so bring one - the shower has shampoo,
