I have been a member of Historic Scotland for many years and have enjoyed visiting properties throughout Scotland. The benefit of being a member for more than a year is that membership also permits access to English Heritage properties and their counterparts in Wales, Northern Ireland and the Isle of Man. And so I have been a happy customer for many years..... so why the two star rating? Because at the beginning of the covid pandemic Historic Scotland, complying with Government rules, closed their properties to the public. They took the opportunity to start consolidating some of the more ruinous buildings in their care and now, the pandemic is over and the public are allowed to visit properties again, they are restricting access to nearly all buildings in their care while 'high level masonry inspections take place'. There are hardly any buildings available to walk freely around. For my annual membership fee I can walk into visitor centres (unless they are closed for paintwork to be renewed as at Melrose Abbey on a recent Bank Holiday, "Closed for Decoration"!, but that is another story) and walk around open areas well away from stone walls. Nearly every historic property is now home to galvanised barricades stopping access to the interior of buildings. Did HS find that it is more economical to restrict access and employ less staff.... a lesson learnt from the pandemic? The end result is flocks of tourists wandering aimlessly around grassy areas, peering through wire mesh and looking very unhappy. No reduction in entrance costs or annual membership costs though. The final straw for me was when I complained to HS that I had been barricaded from entering the 'always open' site of Crookston Castle in Glasgow by locked gates, a handwritten sign telling me that it was closed and another sign saying that dogs were running loose in the area. This after travelling over 100 miles return journey to see the castle. I was told when I complained that I should have checked whether it was open before travelling and, because I said that I was inclined not to renew my membership, they took the initiative to cancel my Direct Debit in their favour! I am very unimpressed. read more
