I was Paleo-curious. My partner and I loved Tom's Pleasures of Paleo cooking class experience. I am so relieved to taste how delicious Paleo cooking/dining can be. "The way to a man's heart is through his stomach" was written for my partner. He's a tough convert to healthy eating, hence, his high cholesterol. He said 'no' when I said Paleo cooking class. When I said 'steak & bacon', he was in. I am so happy he enjoyed all the food & activity last night. After dinner, he said the food was great and he still felt great. He didn't have the heaviness that he normally feels after that much food. I agreed fully. We'll definitely be more conscious of how much grains, dairy, and sugar we put into our stomachs. The only thing I would've enjoyed a bit more of would have been more hands-on instruction. I'd love to learn more knife skills & kitchen tips. Also, I heard from another frequent attendant about a past cooking lesson with a scavenger hunt to different local stores. That sounds so fun! Sometimes great food can come simply from the knowledge of what to look for in certain ingredients. Thanks Tom for your menu creativity and excellent ability to throw a great event among strangers together! You seem to have a grown rapport with many friendly people to share a kitchen with. Keep us in the loop of future classes.

This happened on Halloween. Ribs, pulled pork, sausage, and bacon wrapped meatloaf. It was a good day.

The Story of Ramen is located in the Mission so parking was a little tricky. We got to the general area 20 minutes before so that we could get a decent parking spot. We did the 4 hour advanced workshop where we learned about how to prepare the broth, marinated eggs, chasiu pork, tare seasoning and how to make the ramen. For that day, there were 5 other pairs. Our teachers Manville and Jeff, guided us through every step of the arduous process of making the perfect bowl of ramen. The workshop started off with a lecture about the history of ramen and the creation of The Story of Ramen. Of all the tasks we did, my favorite was making the ramen itself. After learning in detail how much work goes into making ramen, I appreciate ramen more than I ever did before. This was a great team building activity and something new for us. I highly recommend this and of course you get to eat the bowl of ramen you make at the end of the workshop!

Classes start at $70. Whether you're planning a cozy date night, friend hangout, or the perfect foodie gft, this ramen-making class is it.

My finished product was over-salted but definitely had that sourness characteristic of kimchi. It was really cool to see the bubbles forming in the jar which is the bacteria working its magic :) Not bad for my first try, my homemade kimchi can only get better from here. I took off a star because I wish she asked us to do some of the prep work beforehand because I'm pretty slow at chopping/peeling so I fell behind during the event. But overall, great learning experience and it was my first foray into the world of pickling/fermenting!

My personal fave are the rosemary heirloom carrots. MmmmMMMMM. She also makes this ridiculously decadent bacon jam that is good on basically everything. Kelly was kind/ingenious enough to come up with a custom blueberry bourbon BBQ sauce for my BBQ-obsessed husband (he's from KC but lives in LA now, where good BBQ is at a complete deficit). It was so delicious, we decided to commission a huge batch of it as party-favors for our wedding! She chose darling little jars and even helped to adhere a sweet label to our liking, and our guests continue to tell us how yummy the sauce was. And apparently it is REALLY good on turkey burgers. I've yet to take one of Kelly's classes, but I hear they are the bee's knees. Go get your pickle on, San Franciscans!

Douglas taught us everything from essential kitchen tools to own; the importance and techniques of toasting spices; how to stage and time the preparation of an incredible dinner menu; how to prepare and cook restaurant worthy meats, and more! As a group, we were involved in all stages of cooking an incredible meal: pork tenderloin with peppered apples, creamy mashed potatoes, brocolini, green salad, and ginger cake with caramel sauce. With the wine that we all brought, this was an amazing feast! If you are looking to improve your cooking and entertaining skills, one of Douglas's cooking classes is a must attend! In less than 24 hours, I have spoken to numerous friends about this, and everyone wants to check out his classes now. I would highly recommend working with Douglas in any capacity, maybe even as a birthday gift as was my experience ;-)

Then I found Brigitte and White Apron. Brigitte's sent me a great intake questionnaire that went through what I liked, what I didn't--down to specific foods and ingredients. Brigitte and Collin then created meals catered to my tastes and calorie goals (paleo, ~700 calories/meal). Every week, I'd send in feedback on that week's food and we'd tweak things further (eg, cook asparagus in a certain way, no on specific spices, etc). Such a far cry from the on-demand food startups! The thing I loved the most about White Apron is the personal attention I got from the chefs about my likes, dislikes, and suggestions. They're extremely receptive to everything and crafted meals just for my tastes. If you're looking for a personal chef in San Francisco, I highly recommend White Apron.
