I know for a lot of people, Bunnings is synonymous with hardware. In the same way that people who…read moreshop at woolworths and think that they are getting the best price possible just won't visit a foodland, a lot of Bunnings customers are loyal to the point of self-punishment. I on the other hand, would prefer to spend my money at somewhere like Banner Mitre 10. The first reason is that like Woolies, Coles and Dan Murphy's, Bunnings are owned by one of those dominating behemoths (in this case Wesfarmers) which squeeze their supply chain, their staff and everyone else involved in the process. Like Woolies and Coles, what you end up with is not the best products, but rather products with high margins that can be bought in bulk, and if they break it just goes in the bin and you get a new one, and a new one, and another new one. Don't get me wrong... Bunnings has its place. It's a good place to go for say Stanley tools, Hills products etc, but if you want a good chainsaw, like the Stihl I bought on the weekend, there's no way you going to get it at Bunnings. What you're going to get is a piece of crap Ozito or something for $100 less which you can only cut 2x4 pine with before it craps itself. Now, onto my Banner Mitre 10 review... I used to work for these guys about 9 years ago while at uni and they are a great family run business. They treated us well as staff and had great discounts for staff and end of year parties. I felt like I was part of the family. After a few years living too far from the store, I've moved back fairly close to the area, so I popped in to look at ladders. They have a great selection of Bailey ladders and don't stock the cheap crap that Bunnings do. They also price matched a quite ridiculously low price I had for the chainsaw from one of my work's suppliers, so I'll definitely be back. They have a great trade section and friendly staff. What I'm trying to get at here is that there are other options apart from Bunnings for hardware/tools and home improvement products. Give these guys a go because they know their stuff, have better brands and service and are family run.

I am a regular customer of Bunnings Stores including Kent Town as I run my own business managing…read moreproperties and we frequently purchase paint, cleaning products, building materials etc... for our business activities, however, after today and Kent Town new parking policies, I will not continue to support a company that charges their clients for parking. There may be plenty of parking now at Bunnings in Kent Town, but it will be in interesting to see in the near future how they go with their sales.

Kent Town is where my local Bunnings is at, and I used to get dragged here on many occasions by my Dad and boyfriend to buy paint, or bonding agents. Nowadays you wouldn't have to drag me here, I'd happily go because their range of stock is just enormous. They sell everything of every brand here. My personal favourite? The bathroom and kitchen section. Oh, and lighting and electrical. I bought halogen sensor security lights here for around $30. They also hold free weekly workshops and activities for both adults and kids, as well as face painting and community events. For all my ladies out there, it's time to get onto drills, window furnishings and acrylic render. Bunnings is the new black.

Cost Less plants really does have plants that - well - cost less. I was pleasantly surprised…read morerecently to realise that they had identical 'Tom Thumbs' (a little tub of greenery that is a great shrub for low level garden edging, trims easy and keeps it's shape for a mini hedge, etc) to one of those huge hardware chains that ryhmes with Runnings, for a couple of bucks less per plant (roughly 20% cheaper, actually). Thinking about it, the ferns I bought there whilst creating a fernery were a bargain, too (lost to the droughts a couple of years ago now, sadly) There's a huge range of plants here - from little potted colour to trees, ferns, shrubs, indoor plants, seedlings for herbs and veggies, all kinds of stuff - glorious pots too, and a wide range of fertilisers and garden conditioners. There's also a corner (to the right as you come in through the gates) full of bargains - plants near the end of their planting season, remainders, those stragglers left behind - but a great place to pick up some extra's you might not have been able to afford otherwise. I've been here a lot of times - it's my local plant centre, so I figure if the plants are thriving here they should survive ok at home, too - the one warning I'd give is that I've never been here and found it anything but busy - parking on the street can be quite a hassle at times.

This is certainly the case at Barrow & Bench Mitre 10 Glenunga. The staff are so friendly there's a pseudo party atmosphere in there. What I like there was the staff were represented by all age groups from young girls to working mums and blokes in tools belts to Uni age guys. In fact my most recent encounter with one very cute sales person turned into a running joke in the store, as we ran into each 3 times and he realised it must have seemed like he was stalking me around the store. Of course there's the usual paint, power tools, screws and nails but there's also a great selection of outdoor furniture, electrical goods and plants. I'm sure there are plenty of handy women out there too who would feel just at home with the paint and tools. I was particularly taken with the Garden Centre and their selection of plants. Loads of colour and a good selection of natives grasses as well. Did I mention that on my last visit I bought one birthday and two Christmas presents. That's what I call a successful shop.

It's an escape from everyday life and adds a touch of whimsy the stuff dreams are made of. Ok I may have gone on a bit but I simply adore it. I must've had a past life in one of those grandiose French / Italian villas, as I am so drawn to this type of decor. My husband can never understand why I buy these items and put them around the house to gather dust. I then just point out to him that he has his vices and I have mine..so there. Villa Provence is located on Portrush Rd Toorak Gardens right next door to the Trak Cinema. I can't believe they don't have a website or a Facebook page as I'm sure they'd have enough followers to take over Adelaide. Yes it is on the pricey side so pick and choose your pieces carefully if on a budget and if not well you're just plain lucky. There are so many items they can't fit in the shop so it spills over into the walkway inside on the way to the cinema, such as wrought iron chairs and benches, decorative wooden birdcages, book and nic nak display shelving and so much more. And as a note: a little further down the centre corridor at the end on the right is Villa Hamptons! A different feel much like being at the seaside along the Mediterranean, very noyce! As far as this sort of stock goes, this shop is great. The merchandise ain't flimsy or weak or fragile. Most of it feels made to last, which is good. The stock's mostly interesting (though it's your usual brand of odd, needless birdcages and stone faces and wrought-iron chairs and whatnot). It's expensive. But I'll concede that the quality of good seems to justify the expense. I think I'll be returning here in a few years. Unless I want my bedroom to match the decor of the store.
