I've lived in Kenya for the past four years and have never experienced a smell as overwhelmingly bad as the odor coming from Hiltz's dump trucks. I've encountered the smell lingering throughout the streets multiple times, but two experiences in particular struck me as unacceptable because of the impact it had on children.
A coffee shop in Rockport, my 7-year-old niece went outside with my mom. When a Hiltz truck drove by, they immediately rushed back inside because of the smell. Once they reentered the coffee shop, we could immediately smell the garbage on them (along with other customers) and I noticed the odor on my niece's breath.
Biking through Gloucester, I saw a mother covering her children's noses with their shirts since Main Street reeked of garbage. I wasn't surprised to see a Hiltz truck nearby, since I've experienced this lingering odor from them when biking on the North Shore in the past.
I've discussed this issue with Rockport citizens who have called to make complaints about the smell and have seen no change. read more
