All things considered, I'll call this a 4-star stay. I had the opportunity to stay at this hotel for 12 days in September, 2012. I was traveling for work and needed to be fairly close to our location, so I selected this Hilton. After a bumpy start to the stay, things settled down into a very pleasant experience with a couple of lessons learned.
First thing you should know is that not all rooms in this hotel have air conditioning. I had originally booked a Jr Suite, but upon arrival the room was hot, humid and accessorized with large flies that had come in through the open windows. I called down to the front desk to ask about the A/C, and they were able to move me to a standard room with lovely, blasting, air conditioning. All told, it took 10 minutes to get me moved to another room. Excellent.
The second thing you should consider is that staying at this hotel really requires having a car. I normally don't get a car when I come to London because I have never needed it. Unfortunately, staying out in Watford really requires that you have a car of your own, or someone willing to pick you up and take you places. A taxi from the hotel to the center of town (Harlequin Shopping Center) will run approximately 8.00GBP each way.
Internet in the lobby is free (wifi) and in the rooms it is wifi only for a charge. Connection was good, and at the time of this review you can have two devices running for the one fee. I found the locations of the power outlets to be odd. For instance, there was no accessible power outlet on either side of the bed. This meant that the alarm clock was across the room next to the TV. I couldn't even see what time it was if I woke during the night because it was across the room. Also, no bedside outlet meant no charging my devices by the bed stand. That had to be done via the one outlet by the desk. (Luckily, I travel with a small power strip for this reason.)
The hotel and rooms show their age, but not so much so that I was put off. The rooms have a tray with a kettle and instant coffee, etc., so it's not that surprising to see several stains on the carpet from spills. Occasionally, the bath towels left by housekeeping also showed their age, but they were large and perfect for wrapping around yourself post-shower. Speaking of the shower, water pressure was great! All too often hotel showers have lackluster water pressure, but this was not the case here. Bathroom amenities include shampoo, conditioner, shower gel, body lotion and hand soap.
Because I was working odd hours and long days, I did not take advantage of the on-site restaurants, however, I became well-acquainted with room service. My room rate included breakfast, and on the days I was able to have breakfast, I had it brought up to the room. Anna, who most often brought me my tray in the morning, was a lovely and sweet woman who always tried to make sure everything was just right. Evening meals were good, although sometimes inconsistent in appearance. (See photos).
All in all, if I ever find myself needing to stay in the Watford area, I will absolutely consider this Hilton. As long as I have a car. read more
