The selection of alcohol is fantastic, but you'd never know from the owner/employees who are some of the rudest people you'll meet in Oak Ridge. I've seen the owner berating customers for taking too long, asking questions about products, or just because he felt like it. If you can help it, AVOID THIS PLACE, I promise you anything better is right around the corner.

The state's liquor laws restrict sale of wine to liquor stores (not grocery stores), don't permit liquor stores to sell beer (except for high-alcohol beers that aren't allowed in grocery stores), limit retailers to just one store location (no chains are allowed, and stores can't even warehouse their merchandise off of their premises), and liquor stores can't sell anything except booze (no corkscrews, no chips, no wine glasses -- just wine and distilled spirits). As a result of those things (not to mention the state's long-standing cultural attitudes toward alcohol), Tennessee liquor stores tend to be pretty basic, and you often can find better prices, better selection, and more knowledgeable staff in other states... However, I live in Oak Ridge so I buy a lot of my wine and other potables here, and Turnpike is as good as it gets in Oak Ridge. They're not real big, but they're the biggest liquor store in town, they carry a decent variety of wines, and they keep their prices competitive. I especially appreciate their large selection of 1.5-L bottles of Australian wine at good prices. The staff are happy to engage in interesting conversation when they're not busy with tasks like running the cash register and helping customers carry their purchases to their cars (and they do provide a lot of that kind of help). On a recent visit I was blown away to hear NPR News playing on the radio -- not a typical East Tennessee experience.

Nice little liquor store located off exit near Tennessee-Kentucky border. Was surprised to see…read morethey have a rather extensive selection of bourbons including some high priced ones. They offered all the standard spirits plus a selection of beers, "moonshines", and some canned cocktails and drinks. The prices are reasonable. The staff were friendly and knowledgeable.

They had Four Roses Single Barrel, which were clearly marked at $65 each. They also had the new red-label Four Roses bottle for $65, which seemed like a fair deal. When I went to check out, I was told they wouldn't sell me the two bottles of Single Barrel that were marked at $65. The employee even suggested I could "come back and buy them later." I explained that I was from out of state and wouldn't have the chance to return, but they still refused to sell them to me. If the bottles aren't for sale, why are they on the shelf with a price tag? It's disappointing and unprofessional to put something out on display and then refuse to sell it. I expected better service and transparency. As a bourbon enthusiast, I'll be taking my business elsewhere in the future and think you should too!! Just to be clear, these were on the shelf where you could grab them yourself they were not behind the counter with all of their overpriced allocated bourbon !!! (Some priced twice secondary prices)
