Our campsite views.

I couldn't find a location for this specific campground up at Mt. Charleston and wanted to write about my recent experience so I added this to Yelp for others to share also. This campground is ALWAYS booked, and it's not on the cheap side (close to $40/night with fees). We made a reservation in advance and camped up there last Saturday, August 5th. Pro's of our visit, because I am always a positive Yelper :) *Beautiful views! *Each campground has a fire pit, picnic table & bbq. *Easy access to walk to hiking trails (along the road, so be careful!). *Semi-secluded sites (we took note on which one we would book next time...if we care to return). Cons: (Ugh, here we go - and some are subjective to our visit, so this could not be for everyone) * All the bathrooms and shower facilities are LOCKED. In place of them, is porta-potties. Each one we walked to had no toilet paper (we brought our own thank goodness) and were getting on the full side. (and we were there on a peak weekend). I think it would be wise to edit the websites and information to reflect this place doesn't have the nice bathrooms and showers anymore. I'm assuming because of funding. Sad face. No running water at the drinking fountains also. *Our lovely neighbors. We were a little unlucky in that we had very rude neighbors that clearly don't understand camping etiquette. Burping and belching loudly, hawking spit out (every 5 mins) and SNORING all night. It was comically loud. I almost considered it violating the 10pm quiet hour rule. If anyone knows the golden rule of camping, it's we all go to escape idiots and reconnect with the tranquil outdoors. *Safety: Again, just our luck, we had teenagers driving about 25-30 mph through the campground roads around 9:30pm at night, when it's clearly 10 mph posted everywhere. They looped around blasting music about 3-4 times. I was so concerned they would hit a child or someone who was walking to use the restroom in the dark since they were going so fast. *Dumpsters: I always have a leave no trace rule and pack in and out, but if I had wanted to leave my trash from my overnight stay, the dumpsters were so full, and it sadly looked like people had illegally dumped there, or that it hadn't been serviced in 3+ weeks. Awful. It basically encourages people to leave trash. These experiences made our camping overnight trip not the best, and we hope the camp host and Recreation.gov will take this feedback into consideration.

I had to go check out myself because of all the NEGATIVE comments... yes, the negative comments. I am a Las Vegan and I know how to decode the yelp comments. Difficult to believe the host act like a Nazzi and everybody should be aware... I check in for 2 nights, paid $19/night and leave an extra $12 for donation like I always do.... I wanted to check the host and I briefly talked to him. I definitly saw right away, he was not very social and not a people person but stayed polite. I hear him twice asking to people to correctly park. He said please and thank you... It is true, in his tone you can feel a little bit of ego trip and a cop voice instead of a host voice. It will be more pleasant to hear : "good morning, how your stay is going so far? Do you mind to just park in the parking area and not in the natural environment? Thank you so much, enjoy the rest of your day! " I have been to many other campsite where every host were very pleasant.... This guy is definitly not very customer service specialist, and try to reinforce the rules as much possible. I had to check out myself because we do not pay taxes in Las Vegas and it is important for us to welcome conventioners and tourist. Service is a very important part of las vegas. Why 3 stars..... There is not to many rules on campsite, but one major one is quiet hours.... My neighbour had 5 childrens and 4 adults. The kids keep screaming and playing until midnight. The male adults keep singing until 4 AM. If the host want to reinforce 1 rule it should be the one of quiet hours.... (10PM- 6AM ), so why not coming around 10h30PM to ask the late nightimer to be a little more respectful for other.. This site is beautiful, and have large spaces for camping. There is no water, so bring your own. The restrooms should be exchange more often , not ones a week. Maybe friday and monday. I had a great time, love the site, the vue and will be back before the end of the season.

I would really like to give 3.5 stars BUT overall this is a solid campground. Yes, there are no showers, but your camping so get over it or buy a portable camping shower like we did. Yes, the bathrooms are portapottys. But again, your camping; get over it. And honestly they were some of the best portapottys I ever used simply bc they never really stank. The views are AMAZING. And its only 45 mins away from Vegas! Hello weekend camp getaways :) We went up to the campground on a Tuesday and had no problem getting 2 separate campsites for 2 nights each. I'm guessing it's not so easy on the weekends as we did see a lot of ppl coming up to set up camp the closer it got to the weekend... would definitely camp here again though...

The campsite was very clean.. even the portable toilets were manageable! The reason for my 3 stars is purely based on the ranger. What a jerk! We'd just arrived at the site, unpacking, setting up and setting up the tent when he came over literally screaming at us to move the two wheels off of the dirt. Even with his terrible tone, and we said no problem! Of course we are up to camp for some relaxation and to get away from the "city attitudes". This was mid tent set up. About 5 minutes go by and he comes SCREAMING again! "This is the second time I'm telling you to move the truck! Did you hear me???!" Ok... so that pushed my step dads buttons and they both exchanged words. When my dad asked if he could just give us 10 minutes to finish the tent.. his reply was, "no! I drove around the site once and you didn't move it" He was absolutely unbelievable. Move the truck, no problem! We are not up to camp to start trouble. I get it, we all want to preserve the land. But... approach. Every other site I've visited, the rangers come over, say hello, ask if we need any firewood, explain any rules, and tell us where or what to do if we have trouble. This guy was soooo opposite of who should be working at the site. We asked his name, he wouldn't give it. Then we asked for his bosses name, his reply "he's on vacation". We won't be back to hilltop. Beautiful site, but I won't take a chance on anyone ruining the little vacation time we get. Side note, he also drove the truck much faster than he should've been and was blasting slim shady.. that gave us a small laugh. Young kid and he needs a bit of "dealing with the public" training.

Just 3 miles from the Red Rock Scenic Drive & Visitor Center and about 20 miles, and a world away, from the Las Vegas strip. The conservation area features hiking, rock climbing, bike riding, horseback riding. and scenic driving (reservations required October 1-May 31, 8 am-5 pm). Be mindful of the weather. Temperatures are scorching in the summer, and the campground closes seasonally during the hottest months (June 1-August 31). All standard sites include picnic tables, grills, and fire pits. (Some, but not all, picnic tables are covered -- a welcome sight on a HOT day). There are common vault toilets, trash cans, and drinking water (but no facilities to fill water tanks or to dispose of RV waste). All sites are nonelectric. The views within the campground are of a unique and pretty desert landscape, but they are not as spectacular as the scenic drive area just a few miles away. Temperatures were hot but bearable during the day and cooled nicely at night. The price was reasonable for a standard nonelectric site. $25 camping use fee, minus $12.50 discount for senior NPS pass, plus $8 online reservation fee = $20.50 for one night. Only two small quibbles to mention. (1) The signage within the campground could be improved. We had site 42 and drove around a few times before finding it. (2) There were quite a few restrooms with vault toilets. Each building had two separate rooms with toilets -- BUT the campground locked one side on two of the restrooms that we tried so only one toilet was functional. This created a queue in the morning. We would stay here again.

You're better off just driving another 15 miles and parking in blm areas. Or just pull up and don't pay. I stayed there a few days without paying and no one questioned it once, I did this as no one else was paying. Also I would rather just did a hole to poop in then use their toilets

I wasn't able to use the shower, bathroom or laundry without having to traverse to the opposite side park each time to do so. I brought this up to management and asked for a refund, but she kept on bringing up irrelevant things that had no bearing on the situation like, I should have reserved an rv spot even though I didn't have an rv( the rv's on that side of the park had the same issue, but probably had toilets in their campers ) or I should have booked a tent site at the front of the park since I'm clairvoyant and should know instinctively that the back of the park was out of order. Bottom line is this park has no accountability, they won't admit to mistakes. This park is also impossible to navigate after dark since many of the site numbers aren't visible, often pointed in the opposite direction of travel. Simply put, you didn't offer a service I couldn't have gotten from a free rest stop, you've only provided frustration . Give me my money back.
