I would not ever take my pet to this clinic and I would never have Dr. Michelle Laureau ever touch an animal of mine.
I had, yes had, an animal that was seen by her on Sunday. My dog had pneumonia. Did he get meds while I was there which is what I was expecting to get for him when I went in? No. They obviously did not think the pneumonia was that severe as I also never got any meds for him the night before. To be clear, Dr. Abrieu was the initial vet and left me in Dr. Michelle's hands while she was away. What a nightmare.
What I received when I asked questions about his condition since his temp and heart rate was down, was a lecture on whether I understood that my dog could die? I also was threatened to have the SPCA called and have my dog taken into care so he could get the care that he needed. Considering I had already spent $1,900 since he was seen on Friday morning, I think its clear I was willing to do what he needed. Then I got sent over to Central Vet Emergency where I waited a long time to be seen by a vet for my critical pet. Once finally seen by the vet the service was quick. Although what kind of emergency clinic has one vet working on a Sunday during the day?
I was told that I needed to go to Vancouver where he could get the critical care that he needed in a timely fashion. I could have saved myself and my dog, the time spent at emergency in Victoria waiting and gotten him the care and meds that he needed in Vancouver hours earlier. So my dog that she was so concerned about hadn't had any meds since before 4pm on Saturday or IV fluids, although he'd been drinking quite steadily at home that night. Never got any IV fluids for his dehydration either or at Cenrtal Vet.
Compassion. Not clearly a strong suit. Before you take just my word for it. The vet I saw at Central Vet was really surprised at what this vet said. The vet and members of his critical care team in Vancouver were livid over what she said and needed their own rant session they were so upset. Would those extra hours have made a difference in his living, I don't know. Not to mention that they weren't expecting my dog in Vancouver as they hadn't gotten his files. I left Central Vet before 2pm and Vancouver only received his files at 7:05pm, even though Hillside had been told that he was being sent to Vancouver. Five plus hours to email his files?
After waiting four hours for a call back, I also know they didn't think the amount of times he vomited on Weds was an emergency when I started this whole ordeal. I was told to just monitor him and bring him in if stopped drinking water or got lethargic. He was never lethargic at home. Maybe I should have paid attention to my dog who did not want to go into their offices on that Sunday morning. Although I will never get the chance. All I had thought about since last Weds was whether my dog was going to die.
What I do know is that while sitting in the waiting room at Central Vet was another patient of Hillside's. It was her third dog and she was never going to use them again. They expected her to wait 3 days for her sick dog to be seen by a vet. She said through the years their service has declined significantly and their costs have gone up. I wish I had known that before I ever started using them.
I will probably never stop wondering or second guessing my decisions about my dog. I do know my other dog will never be going there again. If I keep someone else from being treated this horribly by this vet, then maybe this will help.
