I took part in the Art of Butchery class, it really was a lot of fun. The Mosner family & "Da…read moreButcher" were great hosts and made you feel very at home at their business. The whole event was very organized (including before hand). As we moved around their building all the stations were set up, so there was little hanging around. My class was split into a few sections, after a little team bonding and shouts of "meat" we got going. Firstly a run through of the anatomy of animals and things to look out for or attributes that change taste, we even touched on a few ethical issues which were interesting. Secondly Jessica ran through food labeling which was very interesting, I consider myself pretty well educated on meat purchasing but learnt a few things (I didn't know to look out for 1000% grass fed vs grass fed). Finally we got into the butchery section, initially with a demo then an attempt ourselves. I definitely learnt a lot of techniques I could use and they helped you throughout. Key food bought out that location, and I am now back at Food Bazaar on 161st, near Sheridan Avenue. I only step into Keyfood for small items, and because it is up the street from where I live. My son picked up ground beef at this market, and the price should've been for a family pack(it was $10.42). The one my son picked up should've been, at least, $6-6.50. They put that meat in a big, deep container, and that is what brought the weight/price up. That was sneaky, and besides that, their meats are ridiculously priced. This is not fair for people who cannot make it across Grand Concourse to shop at Food Bazaar. I go there and get a good deal on everything, but at the price of coming home in pain because the walk takes a lot out of me.

The store seems to be focusing more on expensive organic products, but unfortunately the quality control on some of the cheeses has gone down. I've purchased several cheeses here recently that tasted over-aged and strongly ammoniated. Properly aged European cheeses should have complex, nutty, earthy flavors -- not a harsh ammonia taste or smell. This has happened multiple times now. One of the biggest issues is that everything is prepackaged in plastic, so you cannot properly smell or assess the cheese before buying it. You only discover the problem once you get home and open the package. A good cheese counter should allow customers to smell or sample cheeses, especially imported and aged varieties.
