I greatly enjoyed my visit to Hillside. The staff was quite friendly (It was as if I knew them forever), establishment clean, and of course their meat/fish is top tier. I highly recommend. I usually found myself in the past having to travel to Trader Joes or Whole Foods to obtain meat of this quality. So this was such a lovely gem to find. I highly recommend. read more

Called Hillside Meat Market with a question about buying a whole pig, spoke to Jimmy and got a pleasant respond from him. He was very helpful. Came in to buy the pig and Sal helped us with the purchase. What a nice guy. It was like we knew each other for ever. What a sweetheart. I must say very clean very attentive. All types of fresh cuts of meats .window display very clean. All cuts of steaks , short ribs and beef ribs are to die for. They cater to your liking trimming off any trimmings you like. The best part about this place they have a menu of various combos of all different types of meats . Walking in kind of gives that feeling of having your own personal butcher oh yeah can not forget I get my pork chops cut 3 inches thick flinstone style that's when I'm feeling cavemanish!!!! Not happy with this meat market as of late. My family has been going here since I was young and we have never had problems, until today. I came here to buy $15 of meat cut into slabs. The butcher that assisted us disappeared in the back for a while. I didn't think nothing of it until I returned home and noticed that the slabs that I requested were ground up! He did not ask us whether or not we wanted it grounded, he just took it upon himself to do what he wanted. The meat was destroyed. I called and asked to speak to the manager, Sal. I explained the misunderstanding and he said I would be able to return it for a full refund. I returned the meat in a new bag, partially rinsed with water, and Sal told me that due to sanitary reasons, he would not be able to give me a refund for the mistake his employee made! Obviously, I opened up the bag of meat to inspect and wash it (isn't that what all home cooks do?!). I didn't expect to see the meat all shredded up. Sal offered me the same pieces of meat at a discounted price: $8 instead of $15. He should have given the full refund considering the mistake... next time, his employees need to LISTEN and CLARIFY what the customer needs before proceeding. Very aggravating experience. read more

You just don't get meats from a butcher anymore like you used to. HILLSIDE MEAT MARKET on Gramatan Ave. Mount Vernon NY solves that problem. I was recommended to try this place by a friend and now owe him big. It is like I walked back in time when I would go with my grandfather to see his friend Sal the butcher. The fact that the owner of HILLSIDE is also named Sal might have had something to do with the flashback but the quality of there meats is what sealed the deal. Not only is there meat and seafood ( yes seafood also) the highest of quality it's the cut and packaged to order that separates it from meat and fish departments in a grocery store. A grocery store where there is always a new kid being trained and anything you try to order that is different from the basics becomes a nightmare but at HILLSIDE MEAT MARKET the masters of beef work the counter themselves. As you place your order no matter how custom it may be you get a smile and a nod off agreement as if you just made their day. When you ask for advice on something it's not only well thought out it is when you see the true magic. Years and years of experience and weather it's Sal the owner or any of his employees you are going to witness a true craftsman at work. Something you rarely see anymore. I have been back several times since my first visit and always get floored when I walk in and they say hi to me by name. I just ordered all my holiday fish and meats and am looking forward to seeing the expression on my friends and family faces at Christmas Eve and Christmas Day dinner but the best part will be when I get to tell them about the boys at hillside and look like a star when they try it for them selves. For years now my family has been roasting pigs , we have tried almost every meat market and farm in our area. Most of the time we are disappointed with the quality of the meat until now. My Portuguese friend refereed me to hillside Meat market and my picky family couldn't be happier. The pig was the perfect size and was the juiciest pig we have roasted. You can see and taste the difference, I hope this review helps but either way I wont go any place else for my suckling pigs or any other cuts of meat !! read more
