Teachers expect full participation in classroom discussions. My children's classes average 12-14 students so teachers understand each child's level of comprehension: which kids need more challenge or more support. At the culmination of an area of study, middle school students complete projects including a written report, presentation, and art project. These occur throughout the year in Humanities, Science, and Spanish/Mandarin with students either working independently or collaborating with classmates. At the middle school level, children receive a moderate amount of homework and are expected to be more thoughtful and thorough with the assignments. As a result, the students develop a deep understanding of the subject matter.

Bard Queens is the second of its kind, a public high school with an accelerated program that takes 2 years to complete. The second two years are for college-level work (and, indeed, kids graduate after 4 years total with both a HS diploma and an A.A. degree from Bard College). Those 2 years of college credits can be transferred to some 4-year colleges, giving kids who want it a huge savings in both time and money. Kids have to take a placement exam (not the SHSAT) to qualify, but even if you do well, it's hard to say whether BHSEC Queens is for you. It's a small school, and sports are not a huge part of the culture here. It's in an unlovely part of LIC, close to Laguardia Community College and various subway lines but not much else. Writing is very important; you don't have to be a great writer at 14, but you should probably be open to improving in this area. Those are the caveats. The benefits of this school are enormous. The quality of the faculty is extraordinary: Most have PhD's, and they are devoted to teaching teenagers, constantly available to meet with them and provide extra help. The administration is terrific, and the office well run. The building is modern, well kept, and light-filled. The student body is quite diverse and active in a variety of clubs and activities. College counseling is just beginning for my child's class, but things seem pretty organized. The classes are small and most are seminar-style. Lots of discussion, lots of back-and-forth in the classroom, lots of writing (see above). Expectations are high; you're expected to work hard and be intellectually curious. If you want big lectures, multiple-choice tests, and anonymity--forget it. The BHSEC model has expanded to Newark, Cleveland, and New Orleans. Clearly, there's a demand for accelerated HS education. For the right kid, these schools will be life-changing. As with any educational choice, the key is to know yourself.

This school goes from K-Grade 8 and is really small and focused on giving each student individual attention and maximizing their potential. When I graduated there were only 135 kids in the entire school and my class was made up of 15 kids. It has a synagogue on the main floor because the school rents the upper floor and basement which is where they have a gym. This is a private school without the uniforms and has lots of field trip activities and even puts on annual plays at Queens Theater in the Park. If you're in the neighborhood then this is a great place to bring your children to. The relationships you create here are extra strong and I am still friends with almost half my graduating class. First of all, with the amount of money you pay for tuition, the school has no nurse or a counselor on staff. If anything happens to your child they just send him or her to the principal where they give him or her a band aid and cold compress. They even made a 4-year old hold an ice-pack on her fore-head all day without a teacher's help. And may God help you if your child is a little strong-willed, they will not only treat the child as a plague, but you the parent also. I have never seen a school so intolerant as this school. Their attitude to the parent who complains is unbelievably rude. I think the worse mistake I ever made was bringing my child to this school. My child has since gone to Catholic school and is doing very well.
