I saw Dr Hilger for 7 years. Always personable, took his time (appreciated) erred on the side of caution. During a routine 6 month visit I showed him a small flesh color raised bump the size of 1/2 a baby fingernail. Even though I have an extensive history of basal cell, and one squamous cell, he ignored that, called it an hypertrophic scar and said to leave it alone. As it grew and began to hurt I returned. This back and forth went on for 4 months before I consulted another dermo. She took a biopsy, removing it completely. Results were negative. Over the next two weeks it grew back, and was so painful I had to wrap it in gauze and a ace bandage just to get through the day. I returned, he said the results of the biopsy were negative. Ok, this is now 7 1/2 months later. Remember my history. He says continue with cortisone cream. It is now the size of a half dollar, with a huge black center. I return. Yeah, it was squamous. Doctors are human, so fallible, but given my history, and repeated visits, I think this was a huge screw up. So, be your own advocate, be aware that there are different types of biopsies and get one that goes deep, and if need be, get a third or fourth opinion. I will have a huge scar for life, but that's not the issue for me, this could have invaded my lymph nodes. read more
