The comedy show starts at 9pm but you can get there earlier to dine at the bar. I'd recommend the falafel burger, which is divine! Their prices are average for the area, with cocktail pitchers at around £15. Once the comedy show is finished you could head up to Bliss if you fancy making a late night of it. You avoid the queues because you're already inside! Jongleurs is a great place to dine, laugh out loud and then dance the night away.

Risa is a big club on Broad Street, with five different rooms, each playing a different selection of music, and six different bars. Having said this, it still takes a lot of time and effort to get the attention of one of the bar staff. When it isn't a student night, the crowd is mostly 20 something locals and can sometimes get a bit rowdy. They are quite strict on the dress code there, especially with male shoes, so make sure you're wearing a proper pair and make sure that you bring your ID, no matter how old you look. Overall, a good night out, nothing amazing but still good fun.

Situated inside the Arcadian, the actual door to the comedy venue is an unassuming one (although you can also get in via the much more obvious bar/patio area). I have seen Richard Herring (always a winner), Dylan Moran (a huge disappointment), David O'Doherty (so funny I had to go to the loo several times during the performance) and many other notable acts in their "intimate" rooms upstairs. Well, that's not fair - the ROOM isn't intimate, it's the seating arrangement that will make you feel like a rollmop. Ticket prices are pretty hard to beat too. It's always a great line up at the Glee and I don't believe I have paid more than £15 to see a top comedian perform live. The drinks prices are another matter, but that's to be expected in a venue. They do reasonable deals on "buckets" (bottles) and jugs of beer. The food is a reasonable selection of bar food, so don't expect a Michelin starred meal. It's perfectly serviceable to quench your hunger pre or mid show, but again, is a little pricey for what it is. Due to where it's situated, some great restaurants do pre-theatre menu's which are much more tasty and better priced. If you're looking for a top spot to see some world class comedy, check out the Glee club. It's not fancy, it's not cheap to eat and drink; but depending on your taste in comedy and comedian, you might just have ROFLtastic night.

You definitely get value for money - there are generally 4 acts on and they can be very different. Some of them might not be your style, but I find most of them brilliant and I like the fact you don't quite know what you are getting! I have never been disappointed - well worth attending!

I love comedy…read morenights, but have been to some really awful nights in Birmingham before (where the comedians aren't advertised and you rock up and wait to see who's on), so I am so pleased to have found this night and become a regular. JQ Comedy is a monthly event held at the Rose Villa Tavern in the Jewellery Quarter. It features a compere and four comedians over the course of an evening (a usual night starts around 8:30 and runs until about 11pm with a few short breaks to get drinks) and I have never been disappointed with what I've seen. Harriet (who comperes and run the evening) is always filled with energy and a joy to behold. Her madcap style of introducing the night and the acts is guaranteed to put a smile on your face. The format is introduction - first act (about 20 minutes) - break (10 - 15 minutes), two more comedians - break (5 - 10 minutes) - main act. The breaks give you just enough time to nip to the loo, grab a drink and have a cigarette (so there is no chance of getting bored throughout the evening). We have seen stand up comedians from all around the world, Edinburgh previews, high energy skit based pieces and musical comedy. Tickets are a bargainous £5.50 for a whole evening of entertainment and the upstairs room of the RVT is cosy and the pub itself offers food (so you can grab dinner before the show) and a selection of ales (including at least one Two Towers Ale as the night is sponsored by the local brewery http://www.yelp.co.uk/biz/two-towers-brewery-birmingham). Ever since my first visit in 2014, I have tried to catch as many of the shows as I can. Even if you don't love all of the comedians (there is a wide variety of styles and personalities), you will come away chuckling to yourself. The standard of comedy is sooo much higher and it really is an alternative to a night out clubbing. The staff are professional and its just a generally nice place to spend a whole evening in. They occasionally host tap takeovers and fun events like a vinyl fair, plus comedy upstairs Thurs-Sat. My absolute favorite item on the menu is the vegetarian filo tart. It usually has a lovely blend of spinach, cheese, pine nuts, and mushrooms and is served with a superfood salad and optional chips. The superfood salad is divine - mixed lettuces, onions, pomegranate seeds, tomatoes, carrot shreds and peppers drizzled with a mustard seed vinaigrette. The chips are always cooked to perfection, never mushy. The atmosphere is warm and inviting. The outdoor seating includes heat lamps for winter and dazzly lighting.

You would never expect such a traditional-looking venue when you approach and enter the larger building that is the Convention Centre. When I visited in February they were tearing down the front of the Convention Centre, not interfering with the concerts. And I can't blame em, the old front sure was ugly enough. ;) - It's located a 10 minute walk from the New Street area. A pity that my latest concert, though featuring an attractive programme and an internationally recognized soloist, was rather sparsely attended: The place was half-empty. How is it possible that a 1+ million town cannot fill a symphony hall on any given night? Weird.

Built as a Greek Temple (as you do) it has served to entertain for over one hundred years. Recently by lottery funding it was refurbished to its former glory in 2007. Famous composers such as Elgar and Mendelsohn have had their works premiered there, all the greats of rock n'roll have played there and films have been shot inside. It used to be the home of the C B S O until Symphony Hall was built. The decor inside is beautiful, look up at the ceiling, look along at the wonderful organ which the city organist plays for lunch time concerts at least every month. Like i said it was refurbished a few years ago so the acoustics are state of the art as well as naturally excellent depending on the entertainment. The box office is only open when there is something on but it is easy to get tickets online, by phone and from the Symphony Hall 5 minutes away. There are lifts for wheelchairs so access is good for all. Yes this is a place I have been to many times and the most recent was the TEDxBrum event. The Town Hall is also no more than 5 minutes walk from New Street train Station.

It boasts a lineup that competes with the Symphony Hall where music for the grown-ups is concerned, but this wouldn't matter if it wasn't accommodating; thankfully though, it's one of the best settings for a gig I've had the pleasure of enjoying. Once you're nestled inside the hall, either on the seated balcony tier or down on the floor which is overlooked by the stage, the atmospherics and acoustics afforded by the place are only fully appreciated when the act you've paid to see starts to play. Having caught the likes of Midlake, Marina & the Diamonds and Tim Minchin here, I have to say it's a more intimate gig-going experience than the grandiosity offered by Symphony; in fact, it's somewhere between the Symphony and Glee if you're thinking about checking out the listings. For some reason, the pipe organ at the rear of the stage makes me want to liken the place to a church - a place to worship your musical heroes, maybe! I'm so angry with myself that I missed PJ Harvey play there back in the late noughties. As a venue, the Town Hall has also hosted classical music concerts, awards evenings and 'evening with' type events with established figures from literature and the arts.
