Tonight I'll climb into the large Spa in the room and relax with a glass of something with the fire roaring as the Autumn evening chill descends outside. The room, one of the Lake view spa rooms, the budget option, feels five star and is up there with any high end hotel. Apart from the friendly greeting I got at check in I've hardly seen a glimpse of anyone else here other than my wife and that's how I like it. There must be other people here though as there's a car park full of cars and the place was pretty fully booked when I found it. The downsides? The Nespresso machine I brought along isn't working and the closest coffee is in Lithgow about a half hour drive away... But I know that when I booked. If I could buy this room I would.

ABSOLUTELY AWFUL!…read more Stopped in for lunch with my partner. The service staff (Ellen, I believe her name was) was quite short when taking our order. She said at the café counter that I couldn't pay on eftpos there and would need to pay at the bar, but if I could pay on paywave that she could go take care of the payment for me and bring back my card and receipt. When she did come back with my card and receipt she informed us that the food we ordered was unavailable but that we'd already paid. I had ordered a veggie burger which they didn't have any of and she said they had no other vegetarian options really, though could do a salad sandwich. The sandwich was extremely poor - slimy wilting salad on a stale bun (and it still cost me the same amount as the veggie burger I couldn't get but had already paid for. No partial refund or anything else offered to compensate) My partner ordered grilled barramundi but it came out battered and wasn't even cooked properly (no communication or apologies). When my partner asked Ellen if we could speak with the owner or manager she told us the manager, Karen, wasn't in but if we had issues, we could come by/call later. I called approximately half an hour after we left once I returned home and a guy named Scott answered the phone. He said he was the owner and had been in all day, and he did not seem concerned at all about the poor service and poor food we received or that Ellen had lied about the owner/manager not being there. He just asked abruptly and rudely "Yeah well what do you want me to do about it?" and then hung up on me. I have never received such horrible service in my life and have never paid so much for such horrible food. Blackheath, Mount Victoria, Hartley, Lithgow, Oberon and the Jenolan Caves are all within a 30 minute drive from Hampton. I would suggest driving an extra 30 minutes at least and going anywhere but here.

And it should - rumour has it it's the oldest tourist hotel in Australia, continuously operating since 1878. Playing host to royalty and the wealthiest of wealthy in its former life, it's now a perfect place along your roadtrip to stop for a pint, snuggle up to an open fire and thank your lucky stars that you don't have to hop in your horse-drawn carriage to enjoy the Blue Mountains. And hey, if things at the beer garden get a bit out of hand, they still offer accommodation. Word to the wise: portions are *massive* so what you intend to be a "small nibble" of soup and salad will actually be enough to bathe in and subsequently string together Adam and Eve style.

I got lost in history and curiosity as I ventured round trying to find any sort of bistro area. I eventually did ...... it looked like an old 70's type bowling club eatery. It was good enough, just didn't fit the period of the building .... must have been the last renovation .... in the 70's. It had lots of rooms and doors leading to all sorts of nooks. There were a few people around but spread out leaving it without any real atmosphere. I would like to come back one day ..... but may leave it alittle while. Ps. the food was ok ..... a meat pie & midi !
