The Covid pandemic did have a few benefits (but not many). One unintentionally good aspect was our 15 day cruise around Great Britain was postponed twice which gave us time to become fans of the Outlander TV series. I like the show, but my wife is a zealot who couldn't wait to set foot on that territory in Scotland. So we skipped the tours around Edinburgh offered by Viking, did some research and hired Highlander Tours for the day. It was a great decision.
First, I exchanged a series of emails with Lily over the course of several months to make sure no detail would be overlooked. She was helpful, prompt and a real sweetheart. Lily said Andy, the owner, was able to get one of their top guides, James, to escort us around the best sites within our 7 hour window of time. But how would we find James amidst the busy cruise terminal in Edinburgh? Lily sent us a picture and said he'd be dressed in the costume of a Jacobite.
Yes...and there he was! Armed for battle, but with a welcoming smile and a spacious Mercedes minivan.
From the start, we could easily tell this day would be lots of fun. James explained what he had in mind without losing sight of our time constraints. Nothing like missing the boat (or ship)...literally. There's no room for error when you're halfway around the world.
The first point of business was to get some bad news out of the way. My wife's biggest wish was to visit Lallybroch (Midhope Castle in real life), home to the Fraser clan on the show. We were only 15 minutes away, but James said it was temporarily closed because they were filming season 7 and wouldn't allow any visitors - even well behaved fans - to enter because it might cause a stampede of tourists.....something that actually happened the previous week.
So, our first stop was the town of Culross. As we walked through the amazingly well preserved area, James relayed story after story about the locations used in Outlander. Hollywood could not have built a more realistic set, but Scotland put the safeguarding of Culross at the top of its list.
Next was a visit to Blackness Castle, a place neither friend nor foe would voluntarily enter. However, sensing we had a bit of time to spare, James took a slight detour to see the Kelpies in Falkirk. The Kelpies are one-of-a-kind statues recently constructed on a landfill which has been made into a beautiful park. Along the way, James continued to regale us with stories of Scotland, past and present, plus insider information from his small parts in several episodes.
Blackness Castle is a very apt name. It's probably creepy on its best day, but this one was cloudy, cold and windy. James posed for pictures and maintained his wry sense of humor in even the darkest of spaces.
Our last and perhaps longest stop was to Hopetoun House, a huge estate and home to the Duke of Sandringham in Outlander. What a magnificent palace! James was our personal guide in the "house" and around the extensive grounds which seemed to stretch forever.
But, of course, all things...even good ones...must come to an end. James drove us back to the pickup point and bid us a hearty farewell with time to spare.
Yes, we didn't get to meet Jamie or Claire, but we still did quite well. We spent 7 hours with an informative, personable host who most willingly shared an endless supply of stories about his family, Outlander and Scotland. It was the best part of our 15 day vacation...and only $400.
PS.....It should be noted that James (who works for himself as well as Highlander Tours) will arrange customized tours to all parts of the country in almost any length desired. read more
