Although over time services have been transferred to other hospitals within Greater Manchester, there are still many services offered here, which are useful for people who live within Rochdale. The hospital can be hard to access if you don't have a car, it is almost a mile from Rochdale town centre and the bus which serves the hospital is not very frequent. This is made even more frustrating when considering the hospital car parking charges, which seems extortionate for a hospital. The drop-off and pick-up area is free, so if you can have someone waiting in a car, it will be cheaper. The staff seemed nice enough, I was in and out quickly, but this was down to getting the last X-ray appointment of the day, and obviously, the staff were like me in the sense that they just wanted to get home. There is a small Cafe inside. 3* - The hospital is fine, much better within the trust in terms of facilities and accessibility with everything being gradually transferred out.

Unless you have been in the same situation you won't know what I mean. At the same time I was there there was a drunk idiot visiting also(I was drunk too but not in a twatty way) and he was being really nasty and kicking off with the nurses and staff. It seems as though they decided to take it out on me and treated me like I was him. Very unprofessional if you ask me. I have to visit every few months or so to see my specialist Nurse and it is always a decent experience,as long as I don't fall over in the snow!!!!

I don't normally like to review hospitals, as I don't like talking about my doctors, however good…read morethey are, which would possibly effect my treatment, therefore I review Birch Hill as a building its-self, rather than the staff who work there, some of which work at other hospitals as well, and just run a clinic here. Birch Hill is located far out of the way, near Hollingworth Lake in Rochdale, and is a very old building, to the point I have to question its' relevance, with the slightly more modern Croft Shifa and Rochdale Infirmary also being located in Rochdale. Birch Hill is a really old Victorian Building, and as far as I beleive it was a Victorian Workhouse, most of it has been shifted to the newer hospitals, but they is still certain departments based here. The parking situation is terrible, they is only a short amount of spaces and certainly not enough disabled spaces, which seem to get abused easily, with cars parking the wrong way on those spaces to fit more in, it is like a Free for All, you either get in or you don't, but I find the parking situation to be terrible at most of the Rochdale hospitals named. They isn't many food or drink facilities here, other than a Texaco garage just down the road, or a water machine in your waiting room if your lucky. Staff on reception seem to be in the "office" so if you have to buzz in to your clinic, you could take a while. It is a really old fashioned place, and simply not a nice place to go, and really hard to get to due to its' location and not a lot of stuff surrounding it either. This is probably building wise, one of the hospitals I dislike the most, therefore I feel Birch Hill warrants nothing other than a single one star.

As bad as that is, the conditions in the waiting room were far worse. There was wet vomit on the floor, dried and fresh blood on chairs and tiles, and the staff barely attempted to clean any of it. They completely ignored basic CDC/OSHA infection-control standards--no proper PPE, no hospital-grade disinfectant, no isolation of contaminated areas, and no biohazard procedures for bodily fluids (which are considered potentially infectious materials in every credible medical setting). The staff in the waiting area seemed untrained and unengaged accept to make jokes about the patients..People in obvious distress received no assistance, basic triage didn't exist, and questions were answered with confusion or incorrect information. The lack of professional etiquette, urgency, or even basic competence was shocking. A medical facility should be clean, safe, and staffed by professionals who understand patient care. This place was the opposite. It felt like a butcher shop disguised as a healthcare facility--and the patients are the meat. And honestly, a real butcher shop would have handled blood and sanitation far better. If you value your health or safety, avoid this place. What I witnessed was unsanitary, unsafe, and far below any acceptable medical standards.

It is in the Crumpsall area of Manchester, and is in fact the only remaining hospital in North Manchester, which it of course takes its name from. It does have an Accident and Emergency of here, of which I've found to be old-fashioned inside, with slightly longer than average waiting times. The overall look and feel of the hospital, really did feel old and old-fashioned and in dire need of refurbishment, especially when compared to other hospitals, it really didn't feel like a nice place to be (even for a hospital). Parking here isn't great either, there is only limited spaces and you do have to pay which I strongly despise, the location isn't really near anywhere central other than a bus stop (with services into the city center which take a long amount of time, and a number 16 bus which runs every 2 hours into Rochdale and Middleton down Rochdale Road). Overall, poor overall feel, poor parking and overall poor nature of this hospital where I feel it is only surviving and still standing through being the only hospital in North Manchester, sadly warrants a single one-star I'm sorry to report.

One of the largest hospitals in the area, but may feel under-appreciated or underused with the Manchester Royal Infirmary only a short drive away, which is the largest hospital in the country by the number of beds. The hospital was redeveloped in the early 2010s which was much needed, and the refreshed look still feels modern to this day, it is fairly easy to get around the hospital and find where you need to go, the environment is clean, and the staff are friendly, with overly good standards. I did find a huge contrast between certain areas and wings of the hospital, even down to the modern features and comfort of the chairs, but it is the NHS... you can't expect too much. It's surprisingly easy to get through to someone at the hospital's switchboard, and I was passed to my consultant's secretary and appointment line in a matter of minutes, which is how it should be, while other hospitals can be much more inconsistent. Mobile Signal in the hospital is weak, likely down to equipment interfering with the connection. 4*
