I've done a few flash sales and they're usually a bit rushed and not attentive to what's best for you. Stephanie though, really made sure I knew where I wanted the tattoo. She really took her time with the tattoo and made sure it was perfect. I couldn't be happier. She was so kind and was talking to me and my boyfriend like we were her friends. As for the shop in general, it was clean, and gorgeous. The rest of the artists were super nice and hilarious. I really really hate writing bad reviews for tattoos because it's a form of art, so I wasn't planning to at first. But at the end of the day, it is a service you're paying a lot of money for and it's going to be on your body forever. I tried to find a local artists who had experience doing suns and symmetry linework (mandalas, shapes, etc) and came across Nick. I contacted him with my reference image and he told me we could make it happen. I get to the shop on my appointment day and he started working on the stencil for my tattoo. Which already was kind of weird to me because every other time I've had a tattoo appointment, the artist already has it sketched out before you get there? I was content with the sun itself after it was done. But the rays looked too light and choppy, so I contacted him to darken them at the center. I thought I was explicit on how I wanted it over text. So I didn't try as hard to explain in person. Because of that, he darkened it in between the rays, not in a 'ring around the sun' like I mentioned. I told him right then and there that I wasn't really happy with it, but I also didn't want to not pay him at all since he did spend almost 3 hours with the shading. I thought he might ask for $40-$60, but he asked me for $100 which is a lot of money for something I didn't even want, especially when I already paid close to $200 during the first session. I understand miscommunication happens, but I think it's the tattoo artists job to make sure they understand their customer first before inking. And I feel like he should've taken more time to look at the reference image before starting this whole process. Because then we could've got it right on the first try. Or he could've informed me if it just wasn't his style and referred me to someone else. Honestly think Nick is a genuinely good person and enjoyed talking to him, but I'd rather have had the tattoo done by a complete asshole as long as they did it correctly. Now I've spent almost $300 to have a huge unflattering tattoo on my back that I'm really unhappy about. And probably going to have to spend 2-3x to get it covered or 10x to get it lasered off... read more

These guys are great! My friend inquired about getting matching tattoos for us and they kept in constant communication with her. It was my friend's first tattoo so J made her feel very comfortable and reassuring by answering ALL of her questions. The shop is small, but very sanitary. Never have I ever been so grateful for the power of social media, because it brought me to Nick! This man is such a dope dude, and so down to earth. I came in with a lot of convoluted ideas for an expansion/semi cover up of a prior small tattoo. If you decide to go to Higher Ground Tattoo (which you should), have Steven Jackson be your artist. I can ensure you that you won't regret it at all. I followed Steven from his previous tattoo place. He did a Friday the 13th tattoo and fixed up/completed a tattoo on my left hip. Anyways, I came to him again for every tattoo artist's dreaded request - a cover up. I told him what I wanted to get done. On the day of my appointment, he evaluated the piece and began putting together an awesome design that we both agreed would cover up what I wanted covered up. The whole process took roughly over 3 hours, which is amazing he was able to do all that in that amount of time. He would ask every now and then how I was holding up and gave me 1-2 breaks to get the blood flowing back in my left arm. He's extremely talented at what he does and I'm so glad I decided to go to him for this cover-up. I've posted a few photos of my tattoo and already have a few people asking me who my artist is and I'm more than happy to share that information with them. Now onto the place itself, Higher Ground Tattoo is located in the shopping plaza across the Arroyo Grande Shopping Center off of Rainbow and the 2-15W (it's near a 7-11). The inside is very new and clean. I know some people have an idea of what a tattoo parlor is suppose to look like (dirty, dingy, and old), but this is exactly opposite of that. Those of you looking into getting a tattoo, stop looking - THIS IS WHERE TO GO! I am so glad I came across this hidden gem! I have been researching tattoo businesses for my fiance and I for about half a year. We reached out to other businesses, inquired, and received a consultation but we would either feel rushed by the person when we'd explain what we wanted in our piece, they would say they'd free hand pieces and not have a sketch, or people would give us an artists' contact info where they'd never respond back. I came across Higher Ground Tattoo through yelp and noticed all reviews were five stars, I inquired and within five hours received a response from Nick with his contact information. My fiance got an oni mask with engraved initials, which needs two sessions to get done. Nick got done with one session and we are awaiting on the second session to happen later. I got a henna inspired evil eye piece with horoscope signs and filipino writing. When I inquired with Nick he responded within six hours and was very positive with his response saying that he is able to piece something up for me and we scheduled an appointment that same week right away. The day of my appointment I came in and was instantly greeted by Nick and he showed me his iPad and said he was working on the basic outline, and asked for my ideas as to where I wanted things placed. I am not creative at all but I knew I wanted to incorporate the evil eye and when I showed him an example he spoke to me about having a more detailed looking eye because the example looked like a blob LOL! It was true so I agreed and it was amazing as to how Nick drew a beautiful eye design on the spot! I have also wanted to include my grandparent's name written in the ancient filipino scripture, which he did awesome in replicating it. He is so detailed, he made me pull up a clearer picture of the writing chart to ensure he is writing the characters correctly, I appreciated that because from a far I thought it was correct but he caught a couple details that were out of place. Honestly, I did not expect to go big with this piece but Nick explained that if we went small then it wouldn't look good years from now so we went big! It took about 1.5 hours for Nick to draw out the piece for me and I really appreciated that because he took his time to draw out my ideas and incorporate his details to it. It took him 3 hours to get it done on my arm. Nick gave me a break to stretch, walk around, and gave me a bottled water in the middle of session. He set up movies on the TV for me and made sure I was comfortable because yes, your girl was very nervous with it being my first tattoo! Haha Depending on what you want in your piece the price will vary but on my behalf I believe that Nick charged my fiance and I a healthy price. The environment of the business is clean and welcoming. Especially it being your first time getting a tattoo the area and the people will make you feel comfortable. Nick is amazing and is such a funny character! Hands down the best with designing and providing advice to you about your tattoo decision/ tattoo designs. What stuck out to me is that Nick took his time, literally! He does not rush you while sketching out your design on his iPad and same with tattooing you, he is very detailed in his work. He genuinely cared about the piece that I wanted done knowing it was in honor of my grandparents and even during my session encouraged me by always saying, "you're doing so good!" even though I was in pain, haha!
