Simply put, High Falls Park is an Alabama treasure! THIS PLACE IS HOME TO ONE GORGEOUS WATERFALL, albeit hard to see straight on! Still, don't let that discourage you. ~~~ THE EXPERIENCE We arrived on a day when some of the locals said water flow was higher than average, but not a gullywasher. It was the perfect level to enhance the waterfalls thunderous tone, but still safe enough to allow children to play in the calm waters (closer to the bridge) before the waterfall crest. Once you've navigated to the parking area, the walk to the falls is easy! Only about 200 yards down a partially paved road, then a short scramble to the riverside. The falls are approximately 35 feet high and up to 300 feet across when at full pool. It features a 25 foot arch in a stone outcrop just in front of the falls, which creates a natural bridge. ~~~ BRIDGE One of the most interesting features of this waterfall is the man-made bridge over the river, which once upon a time used to be one of Alabama's Historic Bridges. While the existing pedestrian bridge was built in 1998, the stone columns that support it were built in 1923 to support the original covered bridge that was destroyed by fire in the 1950's. Pictures of the covered bridge are highlighted on a monument sign near the existing bridge. It featured open lattice slats (instead of being enclosed) because mules didn't like walking through a dark bridge with the sound of rushing water coming from below their hooves... or so the monument sign says. ~~~ DANGERS Other news here was the death of a Georgia teen who cliff-jumped from the falls into the pool of water below in June of 2017. Also, a woman injured in April had to be airlifted out when she fell as she tried to get a good position to film her son cliff-jumping from the falls. ~~~ FINAL THOUGHTS I haven't seen many waterfalls in Alabama, but I can't imagine many being better than this! A gorgeous place to visit just for photos, or to relax or even to stay and play. Great for families with children of all ages... just please be careful of the very real dangers here. Otherwise, HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! 2020 / 29

We were in the area and were feeling adventurous, so started looking online and saw we weren't too far from High Falls Pak. When we arrived the caretaker came out and greeted us and asked us if we needed some help. We had parked in the designated space, but he told us we could drive down closer to the falls if we wanted. Since it was close to closing time, we decided to drive down. Not much space for parking many cars, I think he told us we could drive because there were only a couple people there and there wasn't long until closing time. From this point short easy walk to the falls. Really impressive and the best vantage point from where we parked. There were plenty of trails, but they all seemed to take you away from the falls (at least the one we explored). It did look like, it you are adventurous enough, if you cross the river, you can hike down to a small beach area below the falls. Maybe next time. Not sure how much exploring there really is, but it looked like there were a lot of hiking trails to explore. Maybe a return visit would get them the extra star. If you're in the are I'd recommend a trip.

On a recent visit to the area we decided to stop by High Falls. Disclaimer, we only stayed about an hour in the park, so someone who explored more thoroughly would have a more in depth review. The falls themselves were quite awe-some, and you can get pretty close without too much effort. There is a bridge further back before the falls, but we did not go across it. The view of the falls is best taken in from the front anyway! We could see little trails sprouting off in several places and I'm curious as to what would be found down those! They had multiple playgrounds, with the best one being up at the top where the office is. There were also picnic tables at top and bottom. Bathrooms are at the top only. We found we were able to drive down just almost right to the falls and park, which saved time since we got there close to closing. Overall the falls are definitely worth checking out if you are nearby - I only gave it a 4 because I would say it's not worth a very long drive (like 2 or more hours) in my opinion.

We really enjoyed the ride out to this park and waterfall! It was very nice, clean and quiet! Beautiful waterfall and bridge over the water. If you have not been you should go enjoy the view and water.

High Falls when the water is roaring thru.

You can bring kids there are some play areas for them and it's shallow enough before the beautiful water fall you can jump from.

WOW! What a crack!…read more Buck's Pocket is a 2,000 acre State Park surrounding a natural canyon affectionately referred to as a pocket. The canyon lies in the Cumberland Plateau, a geological area west of the Appalachian Mountain chain that stretches from eastern Kentucky to northern Alabama and is contiguous with the Allegheny Plateau on the northern side. It's one thing to learn about things like plateaus in school and quite another to see them in person. It's pretty incredible to see grassland and farmland so vast that you forget you are in the mountains, but then suddenly and out of nowhere a canyon like Bucks Pocket appears like a huge crack in the earth. ~~~ The main overlook known as Jim Lynn Overlook @ Point Rock sits at the end of a peninsula of stone that is almost undetectable from the parking area. You will follow a wooden platform with multiple stairs up and down for about 100 yards. The stairs/platforms were recently refurbished in 2017. Along the way are several side overlooks that are not fenced (so be careful with children). According to alapark.com, the cliffs surrounding the overlook roughly exceed 1,000 feet, but that is overall elevation above sea level... not the true height of the cliff. ACCORDING TO THE USGS NATIONAL TOPOGRAPHY MAP, the area of Buck's Pocket nearest to Point Rock overlook sits around 1,100 feet above sea level. The Little Sauty Creek that passes through Buck's Pocket near the base of Point Rock is at an elevation of around 750 feet above sea level. This means Point Rock could not possibly be 1,000 feet tall as advertised, but instead only around 350 feet, which geologically is referred to as its overall prominence. Regardless, there are sheer drops here that would be unquestionably fatal. A fence with wooden beams and stone columns surrounds the overlooks main area. This is not an overlook for long distance views, but instead one that magnifies elevation differences. Without the fence, even someone without a fear heights would probably have a panic attack at the cliffs edge. Area 2,000 acres Established 1971 ~~~ HISTORY The park opened in 1971 after the land was originally purchased from a farmer by a Booster Club in 1966. It was once inhabited by Cherokee Indians and was also used for growing coffee and olives by the French during the 1700s and later for logging in the 1940s. Buck's Pocket was said to have been give its name because an abundant amount of deer that once roamed these lands. Urban legend has it that a buck apparently leapt from Point Rock to its death after being trapped by Cherokee Indian. Yet another urban legend says a man named Buck Berry used this area to escape being drafted during the Civil War and still another more modern legend says Alabama politicians would come here after unsuccessful bids for office I suppose to wallow in their sorrows. There are 15 miles of trails for hiking and horseback riding plus a picnic area with views into the canyon below. ~~~ FINAL THOUGHTS Beautiful canyon worthy of a quick visit if traveling through Alabama on a scenic road trip! 2020 / 27

It was NOT easy being on the 4th floor in such cramped quarters! The third day we took a drive and found Jackson County Parks & Marina. We took a chance and visited the office. The young lady could not have been kinder. We were able to rent a two bedroom cabin with a gorgeous lake view. The cabin was spotless and had everything we needed. There are walking paths, boats to rent, a little BBQ restaurant, room for campers and I think tents as well. We highly recommend this place and may even come back to actually vacation and not be running from a hurricane!!! Thank you, Jackson County Parks!!!!

We decided to try Jackson County Park. The experience of calling the park was nicer than what I expected. The gal told me about a few available sites and then called me back to let me know there was another available spot that I would probably like better. The site is absolutely beautiful and almost perfectly level. The view of the lake is gorgeous! The sites are spaced so nicely it actually feels like you have space without intruding on another campsite. (For the record, we're pulling a 29' travel trailer). There's enough space to pull your slides and hook up and still have space to park your pulling car. The grounds are beautiful and there's plenty of space to enjoy yourself and maneuver. I am just immensely happy with our stay. I would absolutely wholeheartedly recommend this to anyone looking.
