I made my appointment six months ago because, like all dermatology offices in town, that's the new normal, I guess. I indicated I was going to be paying for the services out-of-pocket. When I finally got to my appointment this morning they first assured me they took my insurance. However, when I handed them my card, which is BCBS Centennial (Medicaid) they told me they do not, in fact, accept my insurance and they don't allow self-pay. When I asked them why not, they gave me some line about not being in network and ensuring that I'm not paying a large bill. Huh? I understand that they have their rules, and it may be a Medicaid thing, but to make me wait six months for an appointment and then refuse services? Not cool. read more

Avoid like the plague if you are trying to utilize insurance. Had a minor surgical procedure and was told that it would be covered by my insurance, and that I would only have a $40 copay. 2 and a half months later I receive a $600 bill and BCBS (who they said was in-network) covered $0 of it. There's no way a layperson could have known what codes were going to be used for billing, nor should a patient have to request information on every single code prior to the procedure. It should be the practice's responsibility to inform patients *prior to the procedure* so they can make an informed decision. Had I know that the procedures would not be covered at all by BCBS, there's no way I would have proceeded, even at cost to my health. Not informing a patient ahead of time what their financial responsibility would be is irresponsible, unprofessional, and borderline unethical. read more

My Provider is great she listens to my concerns and helps find a solution. I have been to a few other dermatologist offices in town and have never been helped until I came here. I live approximately 30 miles from High Desert Dermatology but have been going there for 2 years because I trusted their expertise. In the past 3 months, the PA I had seen left the practice and I was transferred to another midlevel provider and given an appointment with her. I called 24 hours in advance to be sure I had this appointment since I drive a long way to get there. I was told that I indeed had this appointment. But when I arrived I was told I did not have an appointment with the new provider and could not be worked into the schedule of the Dermatologist despite my long drive and their error. I was given an appointment for about one month later , which I refused and have left the practice. There seems to be a level of chaos in the running of the office which certainly impacted me and perhaps other clients. I will avoid this practice in the future. read more

I went to High Desert Dermatology for the first time two years ago. I had a red spot on my forehead I wanted them to pay special attention to in addition to a general annual check-up. My main concern was a red spot on my forehead, and the Physician's Assistant told me there was no reason for concern as she didn't see anything problematic there. I went in for an annual check this year, one year later, and still had the same problem of the red spot on my forehead. They again told me that the area was nothing to worry about. I insisted they take a closer look and perform a biopsy. I was not going to leave their office until they agreed to at least take a closer look and run whatever tests were needed to ensure that I did not have a more severe problem. Upon my persistent urging, they finally agreed to take a biopsy of the red spot on my forehead Days later, they contacted me and informed me that the spot on my forehead was cancerous and set up an appointment with a well-known skin clinic in the area to remove the cancer. If I had not repeatedly pushed the Physician's Assistant working with me to take a closer look and do some testing, I would still have the skin cancer on my forehead two years after my first visit. There is no excuse for this spot not being appropriately diagnosed when I first went to see them two years ago. Had it grown beyond the skin, I could have had cancer spreading through my body, causing an early end to my life. I will never go back to High Desert Dermatology. read more

In my opinion, the two hardest medical people to find are an honest dentist and an honest dermatologist. I have been going to Dr. Carey for at least 15 years, maybe longer. I have n ever felt he did any procedure that was not necessary. And again, just my opinion, he is totally honest. And very good at what he does. Plus unlike most doctors who focus solely on their specialty, Dr. Carey is interested in all medical conditions and knows a lot about other fields of medicine. I have never had to wait in the reception are for more than a few minutes. The practice is well organized and the staff are all friendly and efficient. read more

It's been awhile since my appointment here, but now that I have been to a better dermatologist, I have a more informed opinion about how not great my experience was here. I was a new patient. Paid my $75 copay. Went in for my mole check. They had a medical student come in with the dermatologist, which is normally fine with me, but it seemed distracting to the dermatologist. She did a full body mole check very quickly, and was not particularly thorough. For example, she did not check my scalp like my new dermatologist does. My entire appointment could not have lasted even 10 minutes, and that included the time the dermatologist wasn't in the room. I didn't feel like she took enough time with me to consider my family history or even have a brief conversation about what I should be looking out for, if I should be concerned about anything... There was also no follow up a year later, like there is with the place where I get mammograms - no reminder for an annual check-up - nothing. The worst thing was she paused at a mole she thought looked suspicious for a few seconds, but then decided it was fine. She was wrong. It was not fine. I waited over a year to get a second opinion because she, an "expert," told me it was a normal looking mole for me. When I finally did go see a different dermatologist, she said "That's got to go!" and had it sliced off within seconds of meeting me. Diagnosis: Stage 3 Melanoma. I know no one is perfect and it's not always easy to spot these things visually, but my life has been *hugely* altered by her mistake. In sum, if you are looking for a dermatologist to do a skin check for skin cancer, go elsewhere. read more

FIRST OFF, The girl at the front desk was awful with no customer service skills. Didn't greet me or anything just asked for my ID and insurance. I waited 6 MONTHS for an appt with them, to finally show up and they tell me the take BCBS but not my plan? This is so asinine. She told me the visit would be $350 without any procedures or medication. No one told me they didn't take my insurance which she argued with me about and said they are all "trained". Not very well. All she did was wrote down the name of a place that did take my insurance and acted like I didn't exist. They accept Medicare and medicaid but not the insurance I pay for myself? I am disgusted and so upset with everything having to do with this place. DO NOT GO HERE. read more

I had an appointment this morning (that I waited 5 weeks for) at 9:30. I got there at 9:28. I was turned away and told I couldn't be seen because new patients were required to be there 15 minutes early for paperwork. I told the receptionist that the voicemail I received (transcript attached) didn't mention this and was essentially called a liar. Besides this being incredibly frustrating, how close are patients scheduled back to back where the 5 mins for paperwork ruins a schedule? If I had wanted to talk to the doctor for 10 extra minutes in my appointment this would that have been a problem? Just an incredibly frustrating morning, especially when I took off work for this. read more

Lasers!!! Beware of what kind of lasers you have used on you! High Desert uses Sheer Lasers, which are the best. If you're going to have laser hair removal done you don't want to go through the pain (which isn't really that bad) and have the hair grow back. I'll admit, I'm a chicken and have been going with a friend to see what the treatment is like and how painful it is, before I do it myself. The consultation was great and very informative. The first treatment didn't seem bad at all, but do have them put on the hydrocortisone cream when they are done and maybe take an Advil before you go. So I just purchased my Groupon and will be going in a couple of weeks to do it myself. I'll update this post if I feel any different after my first treatment. Side note: If you plan on having hair removal done here, check Groupon first! They often run specials. read more

I had made an appointment with this facility. They inquired as to which insurance I had. Being of age, I told them which medicare plan I had. They informed me that since I only had medicare, I couldn't see a doctor but would be seen by a PA. Didn't know being retired meant you became a second class citizen. Went to my appointment six weeks later. Drove across town thirty minutes to get there, only to be told they didn't accept my medicare provider. I stated I told them who it was when making the appointment six weeks earlier. I was told "oh well, we can still see you if you want to pay." Needless to say, I left. After losing about 25% of my hair over the course of 3 months I decided I should have my scalp checked. I did this even though I believed the loss was hormone related. Just to cover all the bases. I'm in my 40s female and had obvious loss on both sides of my temple. Obvious scalp showing. I couldn't get into see the dermatologist so I went to a PA. I figured a PA could answer whether there was any obvious inflammation of my scalp and if they saw any hopeful growth. I told her about my massive hair loss. Sometimes 200+ hairs a day. After examining me the PA says, "I don't see anything happening with your scalp. Sometimes if you don't wash your hair for a day, on the second day you'll see more come out". She really didn't have any more advice than that. Something I suspect you might tell a 12 year old not a 40 year old woman. read more

One of the worst experiences I have ever encountered in a medical office. The receptionist was rude and laughed at me when I was asking why they couldn't use my insurance and she claimed it was because of insurance fraud that I had two insurances. I hope others have better experiences and that they will train their staff on customer service and how to treat patients. Being in the medical field myself, a patient comes first and you don't treat them the way that I was treated in this facility. read more

I don't know why people gave this place a bad review. Because of those reviews I unfortunately tried to steer clear with high desert dermatology at first. Ran around Albuquerque trying to find any dermatologist. Every place I found was rude or made me wait months to get an appointment. I live so close so I decided to try high desert dermatology. I was greeted with amazing customer service and an appointment that was within the week I came in. I got my examination and it was great! Would highly recommend this place. read more

This place is horrible. Went here for laser hair removal, spent a lot of money. For one, they constantly double billed me & EVERY MONTH I would have to call for them to reverse one of the charges. I have 2 friends who were going there and this happened to them as well. Who knows how many times this happened that I just didn't even notice. Second, I got a pretty bad burn on my FACE from a tech who didn't know what they were doing, it was totally improper technique that caused the burn and they even acknowledged that. They constantly were losing techs and training new ones and I don't feel like they spent enough time training at all. I even had to tell some of them how it's normally done when I was being treated. After I got burned they gave me a cream and refunded me for that area after I made a big deal about the scar they left on my face but offered nothing else. I gave them many chances to make it right and they really don't care. Now I'm getting treatments elsewhere for the scar but it doesn't seem like it will ever go away and the worst part is that it is on my face. I moved to California started to go to another place and that's when I really learned how bad high desert is. They charge a ton, laser takes forever and hurts really bad. The place I go now uses the newest technology, is a fraction of the cost (seriously about 1/3!of the cost of high desert) doesn't hurt at all, takes way less time, and I have better results as far as hair loss. You're better off booking a trip to California every 6 weeks and getting it done here than risking going to High Desert for laser, but go at your own risk! read more

If you are interested in terrible care this is the place very unprofessional. I was coming from the other side of town, the directions I received were inaccurate and confusing and I was calling to let them know that I'm going to be 10 minutes late. I was told it was fine. When I got there they refused to see me. I was not even going to see an actual dermatologist it was going to be a physician assistant. I'm going back to my regular dermatologist, it is better to wait But to be seen by an actual professional with professional staff. read more

I have been going to this practice for years. Not any more. I had a bump growing on my eyelid and went in to see Dr Gonzales. She treated the bump by cauterizing my eye lid twice which had no impact on the growth and was very painful. She then said, if the bump did not go away, she would use a scalpel. The growth got bigger, so I went in to have it treated again and Dr. Gonzales said, "I'm not comfortable doing this procedure". I left and have yet to pay for that office visit as nothing was ever done that day. I haven't been back as I want a confident physician who knows how to perform procedures. read more

Please do not go here. They "performed" a procedure in the office without notifying me the that the insurance would be billed as a " cryo- surgery. (using liquid nitrogen to burn off a sunspot)" When I called to question why I received a bill for $200.00 the receptionist told me I should have requested a quote before having the doctor perform "surgery". She was the rudest person I have ever dealt with in a professional establishment. I asked to speak to her manager so I could let him know how rude she was and she hung up on me 4 times! When I finally got through to the manager later in the day I left a message and he didn't even return my call. I will never return. read more
