I just moved to Portland and am delighted to have found High & Tight. I not only got exactly the cut and beard trim I was looking for but I also got some great tips on coastal photo locations from Em. read more

Very clean shop. Nora did an excellent job on my hair. She took her time and did exactly what I asked. The prices are reasonable.

They did a great job. Not sure why this has to be 85 characters. How many words are needed to say they did a good job? lol

I couldn't ask for a better barber shop. This is a clean, bright and very spacious shop. Em does a fantastic job. I recommend her highly!

Fantastic barber shop with the perfect vibe. Em cuts a great head of hair and is really sweet. If you're thinking about checking this place out, do it. read more

What a great place. Been with them for over 5 years now. It is a great place to sit and talk about anything and everything while getting your hair cut. Students, military and other special discounts available. Between $15-22 for all cuts. And they straight blade shave your neck. My favorite part. Walk ins welcome but they are busy most of the time in the afternoon so make an appt if you can. You can book online through Vagaro which is great and easy to do. The owner Chris and his crew work hard and do a great job all around. Check it out. And tell them Rodney sent ya! read more

Okay, so I'm still in search of an actual urban-style barbershop, because this ain't it. If you want a nice generic Maine-style haircut, go here. (Your mom will love it.) But if you're looking for a barbershop that will give you a cut with some urban edginess to it, like I said: This ain't it. I give it five stars because everyone was very Maine-nice, and I want to be Maine-nice too, I guess. read more

I had a confirmed appointment with Daniel Dorbits at 3pm. I am about to leave for my xmass vacation. I have an email proving my appointment is confirmed, I had a text reminding me of the time. And I was there prior to the other appointment he double booked. This place is disrespectful, does not honor appointments so make sure you have a back up one scheduled at a real barbershop. Because this was just unprofessional and has made my trip to see my dying grandfather a horrible start because I couldn't get a hair cut to look presentable for my ill grandfather. I don't recommend going to Daniel. There are better barbershops in the old port that charge less. Thanks for the holiday hospitality lol. The vibe is very meek and boring as well. read more

High & Tight is a bit hard to find, tucked away within the Time and Temperature Building on Congress street. Once you do find it, it's clean and professional with a somewhat dark decor, and the owners/barbers are welcoming. I had my hair cut by Adrian, and he did an excellent job. His attention to detail was outstanding. I had actually gone in there after messing my hair up pretty badly trying to cut it on my own one night (I'm usually good at it, I swear!), and he fixed me right up. You can tell Adrian truly loves what he does, and he was a pleasure to talk to. We had a great little conversation about our families, our histories, haircutting, and the Portland area. At $18 for a cut, it's a teensy bit more expensive that some other places, but they offer discounts for seniors, children, students, military, police, fire, and ambulance works, which is nice. Even at $18 I felt it was well worth it. I think they're doing well and are busy, so it's wise to book an appointment ahead of time. read more

High & Tight - Barbers Near Me - Portland, Maine

Such a great experience! Chris was a true professional, and provided me with an awesome barbershop experience. He took his time to make sure I got the haircut I wanted and was a pleasure to chat with while he cut my hair. After two unsatisfactory haircuts from a place that charges double, I think I finally found my barbershop in High & Tight. Would recommend! read more

My barbers hands were shaken and he nicked my ear. The haircut was not what was asked for and bathroom that is impossible to find. Had to buy a new hat to cover it.....even my Face ID couldn't recognize me read more

Patrick has been cutting my hair for years and I cannot recommend him highly enough. I'm a woman with very short hair and was frustrated paying salon prices for a stereotypically male cut. But I was also hesitant to go to a barber shop for the first time. Patrick never made me feel unwelcome being in a traditionally male space. He gives a great cut in under 30 minutes for a good price, and it's easy to schedule online. read more

I got my haircut in late August. I wouldn't even call it a haircut, Tony BUTCHERED my hair. It went from being a semi-pomp to a mowhawk looking deal due to the amount of hair left and placed after he was done. I wasn't happy from the get-go but rather then cause friction with the "barber" I just paid for it and left. I made the mistake of telling Tony that my relatives and partner liked the haircut afterwards to avoid confrontation, even though I had shared with him after the fact that I thought it was too short, he replied with; "it's hair, it'll grow back". He even went to the workplace of my mother and asked her about it. It was all very weird. This wasn't the first time I had been to high and tight, I went once and got my haircut by a "Drake" looking dude and it was much better. Tony, leave my mother alone. I didn't like your haircut from the beginning and you couldn't handle it. Do better on the next person. read more

I am so hyped on my new cut. I tried to cut it myself and utterly failed. Daniel made it look absolutely amazing and I feel so much better. I definitely recommend for sure! read more

I am loyal to the bone with this place. I've frequented this barber shop since I was a junior in college (going on four years). If you're looking for a good shop I highly suggest you hit up High and Tight, whether it's a haircut, neck shave, beer trim or whatnot. Their fridge is stocked with beer. Oh and lollipops on the counter. read more

located in the lobby of the time and temperature building... High and Tight was a nice surprise. I got a cut from Chris, the owner. He knows everything about hair and hairs, including how many there are on my head and how they naturally spiral. After fumbling through my preferred cut description, he worked with me to understand what i wanted, and checked in throughout to the cut to make sure i was happy with the progress. I'll be returning. I moved to portland about 3 months ago and was putting off getting a haircut. After a while, my hair was getting all kinds of shaggy and I was in dire need for a trim. I looked around town and asked some co-workers where to go, but everything around seemed to be $30+. I wasn't looking for anything fancy, just a simple, clean, cut. Enter High & Tight. This place was fantastic, and the haircut was just as good as what I would have expected from one of the fancy salons in town. It's a small little shop with only 3 barbers, good conversation, a fridge full of beer, and only $18! Not to mention the fact that they gave me a punch card which gets me my 6th cut free! This is the only place I've tried in town and its where I plan to stay. read more

I was in Portland for a family vacation and needed a cut. I found this place on Yelp and had a great experience. Patrick was my barber and was awesome. He took the time to listen to what I wanted and gave me a great cut. I'll be back the next time I'm in Portland. Thanks Patrick! Eric read more

One of the worst haircuts I've had in a long time. I won't use his name. Perhaps he was new. But the barber I had was nervous. Hands shaking. I get a clipper cut. One length all over. About as simple as it gets. When he started, the clippers were pulling my hair instead of cutting the hair. He didn't seem to know what to do about it so he barely was touching my head with the clippers. This resulted in an uneven cut. Some areas looked untouched while others were too close. I give two stars because he was a nice enough guy. But the quality of the work was not good. read more

I saw Bob's review below and thought twice before deciding to make a walk in. I decided it was worth the risk, and I'm glad I did. I was given the barber who Bob reviewed negatively below. I will say that he seemed nervous and was a bit shaky, and when I asked him, he said he was new to the profession. However, he has improved significantly since Bob made his review. He cut my hair thoughtfully and explained what he was doing along the way. He took longer than normal, but that is to be expected of a new barber. At the end of the cut, a more experienced barber came to look over his work, which I appreciated. It was nice to see the more experienced members of the shop help out the new guy. The more experienced barber made some needed adjustments, but the overall cut was what I was looking for. In sum, I understand why Bob had a negative experience, but if you're looking for a cheap cut from a guy who is learning quickly, go to High & Tight. I walked out looking better than I did the last two times I got my hair cut at more expensive places in Portland (Men's Room and Momentum). Thanks! read more

Just got a haircut. Extremely cheap. But the two cutting hair PAY SO MUCH ATTENTION TO DETAIL its great. It made me feel confident that they knew what they were doing. Loved it and totally worth checking out read more

I can't speak for the rest of the barbers (I they're just as great) since I've only seen Nora before, but every time I leave the place with a good haircut, a non-drained wallet and a brain full of thoughts from another interesting conversation with her. Booking online is beyond easy since you only have to reserve the time, not also pay. All in all, it's nice to relax in a quiet environment and have someone work on your hair without rushing through it. read more

I love this place. They really take their time to make sure you leave completely satisfied. The prices are great! Its almost too affordable. I think this barbershop is the best kept secret in portland!!! read more

I got my haircut but Nora today. She did an awesome job and is really easy to talk too. I felt very comfortable there. This will defiantly be my go to barbor shop now!!! read more

Came in from Downeast Maine ... Dillion hooked me up first thing in the morning with a tight fade . Dillion rocked the fade . Then Patrick sharpened up the straight razor . I have had many hot shaves ... from Florida to New York . Patrick is one of the best barbers with a straight razor I've had ! Not one nick and super smooth . Totally best hot shave High n tight is the place ! read more

Im extremely picky about people cutting my hair! There is nothing more frustrating than asking a barber for something they say they can provide and ultimately not having it delivered. This will not happen at High & Tight. Adrian delivered on an impeccable taper fade and obviously takes pride in his work. A fade takes longer than 10 mins in a chair and Adrian provided an un-rushed precise fade. Don't hesitate on coming here! read more

Made an appointment for a haircut. Usual barber not there. Misunderstanding about scheduling. Remaining staff were very rude. Went to Momentum, and will from now on. read more

The website for this company is ridiculously awesome! Like something from the 1800's. HOWEVER the guys are super nice! which is what makes me come back every 2-3 weeks! The owner is really nice and nice to talk to! He is an stage actor and priced better than most for that type of service he gives you. Cut, neck hot gel shave, and eye brow trimming. read more

Unfortunately I did not get a chance to experience High & Tight. Showed up at 9am Monday and a Barber was working on a client at a very leisurely pace. The glass door was locked with a sign saying "closed". The hours posted indicated a 9am opening time but the barber would not open the door. He continued milling about very slowly and did not appear happy to have to work the Monday am shift. After standing outside the glass door for 15 minutes I left. read more

Great little place! Get there early because there was already a line when it opened at 9:30am. I needed a haircut really bad and this was right across the street from my rental. My barber was incredibly nice, talkative but not too chatty, and fixed a botched job I had from a previous salon. They are definitely cash only contrary to what Yelp indicated so make sure you have the green on you. It's a friendly, comfortable, clean atmosphere and a reasonable price of $20 for a mens cut. read more

Don't usually use this site, but wanted to leave my thanks to Marion at High & Tight. Excellent hair cut and she put up with my hemming and hawing regarding length. Super reasonable price and a great place in general. read more

As a student always on the lookout for a good deal with quality to match, it can be difficult most times especially when it comes to haircuts. I was used to going to another larger chain hair salon where the stylists changed each time, and each end result was more variable than the last. So, for the sake of my sanity, I ventured out to High and Tight instead of my usual spot, and I was more than happy I did. The environment makes me nostalgic for an older time, and the barber shop seating was just the right touch. I don't think it would have mattered which of the barbers cut my hair because they seemed so at ease with their work and interacting with their clients. For $15 (students), you can expect a solid cut with plenty of attention to detail. Not to mention it is quick (relative to what I am used to anyway). Don't hesitate to check this place out! read more

These guys rocked it. Solid haircut with an excellent appointment system. Other Portland options include paying $50 for a haircut and a shampoo. This place charges you about $20 for a no frills cut includes a neck shave. read more

I've been to High & Tight twice now, and the attention to detail that Chris puts into each haircut is really impressive. He's careful to understand what you're looking for, uses a range of techniques to do it exactly right, and all for a price that's extremely reasonable. I'll be going back as often as I can. read more

Got a haircut from Marion. Very pleased with the results. Will definitely book again.

My long search for a great barber in the Portland area is over! The staff are always friendly, and Chris is always on time with his appointments - I never had to wait once, after making an appointment, which I recommend). Chris also has an uncanny way of remembering exactly how i want my hair cut each time I return; not something I used to get with previous barbers. read more

Got a very detailed hair cut for an excellent price. Will return.

Best hair cut I've had in years!!!! Just moved to Maine. I was worried I would not find a good barber. This was first place I tried. I will not try another barber. Great place! read more

Been looking for a great barber since moving back to Maine. This place hits the nail on the head. - A little tricky to find (which is probably it's only knock) - Comfortable atmosphere - Ability to make reservations on-line (a huge plus for me) - Chris does a great job of listening to what you want and checks in with you throughout the cut. - Very attentive to detail--dint feel rushed at all even though it was the end of the day. - Takes notes after the cut of what he did so you can replicate the same great cut over and again - Frequent buyer card--10 cuts gets you a free one! Very great experience. Simple. No frills. Very high quality cut. Not going anywhere else after fiddling around at other overpriced and lesser quality places around Portland. read more
