I found my new spot for fresh cuts and I cannot imagine getting my hair cut anywhere else. They offer a plan where you pay $60 monthly for unlimited executive cuts, which even includes a hair wash. It's an amazing deal that saves me money every month. Conveniently located by the Old Port, right off of Exchange, Blind Pig provides a casual yet classy ambiance for those wanting a professional cut. As soon as you walk in you almost feel like you are walking into a speakeasy, which isn't surprising considering they are located in a basement. A hostess at the front desk, which also serves as a bar, greets you with the biggest smile. She then offers you a drink. That's because at Blind Pig, your haircut comes with a side of beer or cocktail of your choice. They offer simple drinks, like a glass of wine to more fancy cocktails, like Bloody Mary's. Never once was my haircut started on time, or even 15 minutes late. It was a constant 20-30 minutes late after my appointment time. I was so excited to find this place for my husband while we were vacationing in Maine. He is bald and has a very bushy beard that gets a little unruly at times. It had been a few weeks since his last trim so I looked for a place to go and this place looked too good to be true! It is the epitome of a man cave...it's in the basement, there's a bar, barber chairs, sofas, televisions, and a massage chair. Not just that but they give you a drink...scotch, whisky, whatever your preference while you wait. I walked in to check it out but immediately turned around because I wanted him to have the ultimate male experience without my interference. That being said, he said that his barber, Jason/Justin? (My husband is horrible with names) was pretty fantastic and made sure he was thoroughly taken care of while there. When my husband and I moved to Portland, one of our first priorities was finding a new hairdresser/barber. Somehow I stumbled across the Blind Pig and saw their membership which is $50 per month and unlimited haircuts.... wait what?!? Well, I couldn't believe it either. So to figure it out, I scheduled just a single visit. My first time going, I had Lily! The whole experience was wonderful. They start you off with a nice head massage and then cut your hair, shampoo, and style. Lily listened to my requests and did exactly what I wanted. The second you walk into this place you immediately can feel their relaxed and chill vibe. After my initial appointment, I immediately knew that this was the place for me! I requested to sign up for the membership and they were able to transfer my single appointment into the membership which was super easy and saved me from spending money on the cut and membership. Since coming I have also had cuts from Meg and Jaime. Both were wonderful, however I have since stuck with Jaime as she is simply amazing and has a killer personality! I won't go to anyone else now! So.... about the bar. Drinks are complementary!!!! And yes I'm serious! It's literally the best of both worlds, a nice head massage and a drink in hand! I'll admit, I'd been going back and forth on coming in for a hair cut and beard trim here for a while. Born and raised in Maine, I had a hard time coming to grips with the cost. However, not only was it worth every penny, this will now be part of my regular routine! On Market Street, across from the Regency Hotel, the shop is just below street level with more than enough natural light coming in from the street level windows. There is a speakeasy style atmosphere, comfy chairs and couches to relax in while you wait and I love the pressed tin ceiling. I had set my appointment up online and check in was a breeze. Being offered a complimentary drink is a nice touch and being as it was Friday afternoon, I indulged in a Jack's Abby House Lager. While I waited for my cut and beard trim, I took some time to take in the surroundings. The details on everything create a cozy atmosphere, one that I found to be very comfortable. Now to get into my cut and beard trim, I had booked my appointment with Lily and she was simply amazing. She took plenty of time to talk with me and discuss what I wanted to do with my hair and beard, she explained some of the options available and was a great conversationalist. She also made sure that I was comfortable too. The air conditioning was not working the day I went in, a hot July day, so she made accommodations to help keep me cool as well. Overall, I don't think I have enough good things to say about both Blind Pig Barber and my stylist, Lily! Booked an appointment with Justin for a haircut for the week leading up to my wedding, and a follow-up visit the day before the wedding for a hot lather beard trim with John. Being from the Portland area originally, and living in SoCal now, I had never been to Blind Pig but saw great reviews online. I could not be happier with the service I received here. Justin took time and care to give me a haircut that reflected what I was looking for for my wedding, taking consideration into wedding photos. He was great and took his time. I had a "hand detailing" with Sam, and having never had a manicure, etc - was impressed with how relaxing and nice the process was. John was a rockstar - taking his time and helping me achieve the beard shape and look I wanted. He was precise with cutting stray hairs, and a master with the straight-razor on my cheeks and neck. I don't know how you can go any place other than here for a person's grooming needs. I come here every time I come to Portland and will continue to do so until this place closes or I die. They offer complimentary drinks when you arrive and have everything from coffee to soda to beer to liquor. There are plenty of tvs to keep you entertained while you wait and ever have massaging chairs. Our most recent trip to Portland we were getting married and not only did they give a great hair cut and beard trim (after having not touched my beard for about 8 months) but I also came back the day of my wedding for them to touch up any loose ends as well as style my hair and beard for the wedding. Occupying the site of a former speakeasy (and named for a term that some once used to refer to a speakeasy), the Blind Pig honors its locational roots by housing a well-stocked (for a barbershop) bar behind the host station. Given that my appointment was scheduled for 12:30 (and that I no longer imbibe), I politely declined the offer for a mixed drink and went with the chilled can of seltzer water instead. But even before the cool beverage, my first impressions of this unique barbershop coalesced in the washroom, which I took a beeline toward upon entering the establishment (motivated by a 21 ounce green smoothie I'd polished off during my drive to Portland). I think that one can often gauge the quality of a public business by the quality of its restroom, and this one was was definitely high quality--squeaky clean floor, toilet and sink, piping hot water when you turned the "H" spigot, a spotless mirror, abundant paper towels when you operated the dispenser, and a ubiquitous but faint musk in the air that augured well for the barber chair. Emerging from the lavatory, I sat in one of several comfortable (and clean) leather chairs in the waiting area to sip on my seltzer and take in the ornate tin ceiling, the exposed brick and stone foundation upon which the mirrors were hung, the daylight streaming in from the long line of sidewalk-level windows (the shop is located below street level), and the general early 20th century vibe. I had opted for the 'Executive Haircut.' Nate was my barber, and he did a splendid job of making me feel relaxed and listened to regarding the cut I had come in for and any relevant questions or concerns. Working with concentration and intent, he took his time with comb and sheers, asking me at one point if the cut was the right length and look before spending even more time to dial it in and sharpen it up. A hot, aromatic towel on the neck ensued, followed by a straight razor shave, and a redolent aftershave. At this point I was tilted back while my face was covered with a hot towel and my hair was thoroughly shampooed and scalp expertly massaged. After almost an hour of lavish attention, I sauntered up to street level and out into the sun, utterly relaxed and sporting one of the best haircuts that I've ever had. After being less than satisfied with my first cut (not horrible just no discernible style) I called the shop and spoke to them about my dissatisfaction. Jen at the front desk was immediately responsive and and accommodating and made a follow up appointment for me the next day with Justin, their top stylist. Justin was awesome: confident, personable and very professional. He immediately sized up the situation and went to work. 30 min later I walked out of there with a great cut. What a great experience here. For years I've struggled with my hair as it grows in very strange ways. I honestly felt like this was the first time I had someone who actually knew what they were doing. I scheduled an appointment online, which was super simple to do and arrived the day of a few minutes early. As I entered I was greeted and was offered a beverage. When I say beverage I mean a beverage, whiskey along with other offerings. I sat down and relaxed watching tv as I waited for my time. Justin came and got me to begin my appointment. I sat down and told him I wasn't sure what I wanted or what was even possible with my hair. He took his time and came up with a plan and even a backup plan. WOST haircut EVER .I felt like it was super unprofessional experience . my hairdresser NOT Barber was wearing tie-dye pants and had colored hair. I was hopping for a little more professionalism. It felt like a bar and not a barbershop it was less about my hair and more about a old port style bar. No male Barbers in site when I walked in the door at noon on a Saturday. I could sum up this experience up from one quote by the immortal Donna and Tom saying "Treat Yo Self" This is by far the the most expensive haircut I have ever received but the amount of pampering one is given, from shaving the back of the neck, to the hot towel on the face, to head massage, it truly is a hair cutting experience vs just the regular cut and run. From the time you walk into the barber and given a drink (mixed, beer, or some non-alcoholic options) The leather couches and large screen TV's are playing. Walked in and checked in for my appt a few minutes early. I was offered a drink from their bar. I had Elliott who was very friendly and chatty. He did a great job at the hot lather head shave as well as the hot lather beard shave/trim. They mentioned they have an unlimited shave service for $75 a month.. and needless to say I just might pop back in to take them up on that offer (for those with a full head of hair, i'm pretty sure they have the same service for a little less). . It's been a year and a half since my last review and I'm sad to say I no longer frequent the Bind Pig. Still love Elliot and I think he's great but the shop is just way too expensive and way to disorganized for me to keep going. The monthly membership price was increased by 20% and on top of that they charge full price for a beard trim. Adding a tip to the mix means that my haircuts now run well over $50 a visit! No way. I've got plenty of great options elsewhere on the West End for half that price. And the shop I go to now doesn't have a screwy computer system that random cancels your reservations and charges you odd amounts on your credit card with no explanation. Cool spot! My regular barber was away on vacation and there was no way I was going to make it two weeks with this poofy afro on my head, especially in mid-July. Had heard some good things about Blind Pig, looked them up, and it was easy to make a reservation on their website so I did so, going with the "executive" cut. Turns out, the executive versus the "express" or whatever it's called basically gets you a scalp massage, the shampoo, back neck shave and maybe something else I'm forgetting, while the express is just the cut and you're on your way. I typically cut and run, but man, those little additions had me relaxed and feeling like a new man! Throw in the complimentary beer and my day made a turn for the better pretty quick. Elliot was my dude and did an excellent job on the cut. A pleasure to talk to as well and if/when I make another appointment here, I'd definitely make a point of setting something up with him again, though I'm sure the others are excellent as well. The price is more than going to a regular ol' barber, but I'm used to paying $35-40 anyhow and any salon cut will cost you that much, if not more. What you get here is well worth that money and I think the express was pretty reasonable. I ride or die with my current barber, so until he hangs it up or gives me an unauthorized mullet, I'll be sticking with him, but I'd absolutely go here the next time I'm in a pinch. Walked in with my son on a Sunday morning and they were able to accommodate us quicker than promised. The boy didn't really know what he wanted for a haircut and they were very patient in working with him to give a cut he would like. They did a great job, and he feels really good. I, too was very pleased with my haircut. Outside of the quality of cuts, all of the employees were just very friendly and courteous. Put it all together, and this is a strong value. On Thursday I decided to go out and get a professional head shave at the Blind Pig Barbershop. It had been highly recommended to me as an experience of a lifetime. I booked the appointment and drove to Portland. The ambience was all I had heard it would be. I sat down in the leather chair and was served an awesome beer. When my turn came I was excited that this was going to be amazing, especially since Friday was my son's wedding and I was going to have a great day. The shave took about 30 minutes and once it was over the barber told me that there were a couple of hot spots (nicks as I would call them) and not to touch my head for a little while. I did as instructed. I noticed one spot on the right front side of my head and was surprised how big it was. However, after getting home I noticed a couple more spots just above my ear. When my wife got home and looked she noticed about 8-10 spots on my head. I looked at it in a mirror and was shocked at the hack job (literally). This was not the first time I had a professional shave and never before had i been nicked at all. And none of the other times did I pay as much. This was so bad I had to wear a hat for the wedding. I received a survey asking the likelihood of me recommending them from 0-10 and I could not honestly give them more than a 1. To say that I was disappointed would be an exaggeration. I am no where near disappointed, it is much closer to appalled. If I had to describe it I would say that it is easy to see why "blind pig" is in the name. I was not the blind one, but was surely a stuck pig. If you go for a professional shave do so at your own risk. I will never go back.
