An outstanding vegan restaurant on Plaza de los Girones. * * * I was at first pessimistic, when I was served a tasteless vegetable soup. You have seen this before. Cook boils a bunch of vegetables together and puts the mess through the blender. You are served brown paint. * * * Everything turned incredible after that. I had two fantastic batidas. (That's smoothies for you Americans.) Spain has incredible fruit - and that applies to the fruit that they puree and put into tubes for batidas. I marveled at my batidas all night. My wife had a Pad Thai that puts the Pad Thai in Thai restaurants to shame. Far more intense peanut taste than you usually get. Plus an entertaining mix of vegetables in the noodles. I had a Seitan Cordon Bleu. I could not believe that you could make "Veal Cordon Bleu" with fake vegetarian ingredients and have it come out being remotely edible. This had the texture of an utterly magnificent piece of veal. Both real Veal Cordon Bleu and Good-For-You Cordon Bleu are texture plays rather than taste plays. This tasted practically like a Veal Cordon Bleu - which is to say it was bland. But a real Veal Cordon Bleu is incredibly comforting. This was incredibly comforting. I was impressed. * * * Desserts are usually weak at vegan restaurants. These desserts were world class over-the-top. My wife had one of the best chocolate puddings ever. One minute she is saying she is too full to touch another molecule. The next minute, she is inhaling her entire chocolate pudding in practically one breath. It had been years since she had had a chocolate dessert that good. I had the best take I have ever seen on cheesecake with berries on top. Spain must have very impressive berries - much more impressive than you get in the Pacific Northwest. My cheesecake was a regular vegan cheesecake. (These are often pretty good.) There was a microscopically thin layer of berry conserve on top and three small preserved berries on top of that. That microscopically thin layer of berry conserve Had more berry taste than an entire orchard in Oregon. It had more taste than a jar of fancy berry jam from France. I was hit with a tsunami of berry taste that left me frankly stunned in my seat. I went through the rest of my cheesecake about as fast as my wife went through her chocolate pudding. As an English speaker, Travelling Spain can be awkward and stressful at times. Luckily big cities tend to put multilingual individuals to man the restaurants and businesses which is helpful (not something often done in America sadly). But Hicuri was no different and I appreciated the friendly English speaking server who helped me find something I would enjoy and ensure I was taken care of. A little awkward going in solo during rush hour (my brother was sleeping off jet lag) but whatever, the food was pretty good. I got the curry bowl (something Thai if I remember correctly) and it was 4/5. I ordered two so my sleeping brother could have a late dinner when he woke up. He thought it was pretty good too. Their desserts were okay, nothing out of this world but definitely worth the buy. I ended up revisiting a second time before I left Granada one last time, (Granada is definitely the city for people living the vegan lifestyle like myself.) I would return but would bring a partner or group if said individuals were available, I was the only solo person at a table if I remember correctly at the time I went. We got a table here by chance as we we came at around 1pm, but by about half past the place was booked out until 4pm and they were turning customers away! The food here was pretty good, I liked the gazpacho as it wasn't creamy or thick so it felt a lot healthier. The salads were good albeit not very filling, but the vegan meat substitutes were quite interesting as it tasted so much like meat for just soya bites. My mum had the paella which is apparently a Saturday only dish and really liked it. The prices are moderate and the service was very good. One of the staff members knew English which was helpful and food came pretty quick too. This place seems really popular with the majority of tables being reserved and I'd say we were lucky to get one at lunch time without a booking so I suggest book or otherwise go at an odd time instead. read more

All I've got to say is that every dish we ordered was delicious and we felt like we were family eating there! It was an incredibly nice atmosphere as soon as we walked in although it was so busy we had to wait for a table. But was it with the wait!? Most definitely! As a vegetarian, who leans toward vegan culture, I really loved the options here, including the burgers and tapas. The hosts were super lovely and the food had a lot of flavor and zest to it. This was one of the best vegan restaurants I have ever been to! From the service to the food everything was impressive. I ordered the croquettes, salmorejo, bolognese lasagna, and almond cream tiramisu. The lasagna and tiramisu were the highlights, with the "beef" and "cheese" looking and tasting so delicious! I couldn't tell it was vegan cheese! The tiramisu had a distinctive almond flavor, which gave the dessert an overall nutty texture. It was absolutely delicious! Hicuri is a great restaurant that serves primarily vegan food but also has non-vegan options. I was looking for a lighter option for a midday snack, so I ordered a coffee and a smoothie. It was a relief to have a great healthy meal after too many "vegetable tagines" and "veggie tapas". Yay for soy milk and other milks, clean fresh gazpacho and salad, vegan Spanish ratatouille, and two wonderful desserts that were so sweet and refreshing without being cake (carrot cake and tiramisu). You can choose either a la carte or a meal option for 12.80 euros. Can't rave enough about this place. Some of the best vegan food I've eaten in a long time! I had a giant glass of orange juice, a ratatouille with veggie sausages and potatoes and an almond tiramisu cake for dessert. The food was divine! I'm definitely coming back. I travel within Spain several times a year, and often find myself in Granada, sometimes for multiple months. I've had vegetarian and vegan food all over Spain, and I can say without a doubt Hicuri is my favorite in ALL of Spain. Incredibly friendly service. And the food is amazing. I recommend the fake chicken burger with vegan cheese. They give you a little tapa of vegetables and dip before your main course is served. While small, the wine list is fabulous, and they offer a few local and eco wines by the glass. Reasonable prices too. They even have a little store where you can pick up vegan and vegetarian products. I LOVE Hicuri and can often be found there while I am spending time in Granada. read more

I am not a connoisseur of vegan food, but if regular food is the standard then I must say that my meal here fell woefully short. I frequently eat veggie burgers at home and enjoy them, so with this experience in mind I ordered the Hicuri hamburger, which came with vegan cheese and bacon and was smothered in mustard and ketchup. Neither bland taste nor crumbly texture resembled anything close to a hamburger, nor even a decent veggie burger, and while edible, was not at all enjoyable. If I were to return to this establishment I'd stick to the smoothies and perhaps the vegetable creams, but anything more within the realm of substitutions would be courting disappointment, and for the price it simply isn't worth it. read more

Hicuri was a surprise find after getting lost trying to find an Irish pub near Gran Via. I took heed of giant RESTAURANTE VEGANO sign outside and vowed to come back with my vegetarian boyfriend. Vegetarian and vegan options in Spain are a bit slim (what can you expect from a country that worships jamon?) so we were stoked to have one within a 10 minute walk from our apartment in the Albayzin. The restaurant has ample indoor seating and sell a variety of vegan and health food items (all for a very fair price) near the counter. This is where we stocked up on vital wheat gluten, frozen fake meat, rice milk, and herb salt. The menu consists of typical Spanish dishes with a no-meat twist. You can go a la carte or choose a starter, main dish, dessert, drink and coffee for about 12 euros. We had the: - Salmorejo: Excellent chilled tomato soup. A little thicker than gazpacho, salmorejo typically has cuts of ham in it. Hicuri's featured a healthy serving of avocado. - Stir-Fried Seitan: Asian inspired dish with an assortment of fresh veggies and seitan (deliciously homemade!) over rice. - Veggie Lasagna: Again, great assortment of veggies in this creamy lasagna dish. The pasta was an alternative grain pasta. Mucho delicioso. - Tiramisu: Was surprised at the texture. This is more a rice pudding flavored like tiramisu than actual tiramisu. Great none-the-less, but be warned this may not fit your tastes. - Juices: They can blend anything! Just ask. Overall, a fantastic vegan option in meat-heavy Spain! read more
