Owner Donny Wallace Is a fantastic coach and provided great hospitality to couple hundred that were in attendance for team training. There is plenty of mat space available. Bathrooms were clean and there's even a dedicated dressing room for women. Mr. Wallace runs a professional training facility and is surrounded by a respectful group. I've heard it said that walking into a Jiu-Jitsu Academy can be one of the most intimidating things you'll ever do. I have to agree with that statement. Yet Donny Wallace and his students at HICS MMA made that experience worthwhile. And while I thought I knew reasonably well what I was getting into, after a couple classes a whole new world opened up to me. I started BJJ to take on a new challenge and stay physically fit, but it wasn't just those things that kept me coming back, grinding it out day after day over the course of the last year. Jiu-Jitsu gave me not only a physical challenge, but a grammar and method for self-discovery and improvement. The matts don't allow you to lie to yourself. In the middle of training you are given a window into your internal world. You grapple not only with your training partners, but you have to grapple with yourself. You have to confront your own limitations and learn to push past them in moments of extreme pressure. Jiu-Jitsu will teach you more about yourself than you may want to learn, but it is a knowledge that equips you to face difficult circumstances. Difficult circumstances like self-defense situations, but also in your job, relationships, or whatever life brings your way. Calling Donny and his staff "instructors" or "professors" does not really do justice to what what they can help you accomplish. They are a more like guides on one of the greatest physical and mental journeys you will ever undertake. I can't recommend HICS MMA enough.
